The New York Jets acquired a guy named Aaron Rodgers via trade this offseason from the Green Bay Packers, but Rodgers needs a running game to succeed. Thus, potentially terrific news for Gang Green on Wednesday when coach Robert Saleh said he expected tailback Breece Hall to be ready for Week 1 against Buffalo off a torn ACL that ruined a mega-promising rookie season.
NFL Betting News: Jets Coach Believes Breece Hall Could Be Ready For Week 1 vs. Bills
“I’m very optimistic on that one,” coach Saleh said Wednesday. “I don’t want to jinx it. (knocks on wood) I mean, the kid’s already hitting over 22 (mph) on the GPS, so he looks frickin’ good.”
Hall rushed for 463 yards and four touchdowns on 80 carries and added 218 receiving yards on 19 catches with a TD in seven games before suffering the knee injury in October. He might have won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year if not for getting hurt. Teammate and receiver Garrett Wilson ended up winning it. No season totals posted at the books yet for 2023 because of Hall’s uncertainty, but he is +2000 to lead the NFL in rushing yards.
Jets running backs ranked 11th in rushing yards over expected from Weeks 1 through 7 when Hall was healthy. That production dropped to 27th over the final 11 weeks with Hall out of the lineup. It’s unclear if Hall will be ready to go when Jets veterans are due to report to training camp on July 26 or the Hall of Fame preseason opener against the Browns on Aug. 3. The Jets are 1-1 in HOF Games, losing to the Bears 20-6 in 1977, then defeating the Eagles 41-14 in 1992.
It has been six months since the surgery, so it would be surprising if he were ready to go on Day 1 of training camp. He hasn’t been practicing during OTAs, though he was seen running off to the side this week. With Rodgers on board and a revamped wide receiver corps, the Jets’ offense would be magnitudes more explosive if Hall is ready for Week 1 and doesn’t show ill effects.
“I feel like he won’t need to be limited during training camp even though we still will, just to be conscientious and cautious with him,” said Saleh.
The Jets also have Michael Carter, Zonovan Knight and Israel Abanikanda in the backfield. Abanikanda was a fifth-round pick and a highly productive player in 2022 with Pitt – 1,431 rushing yards, a 6.0 average and 20 touchdowns. He broke Tony Dorsett’s school record with a 320-yard game against Virginia Tech.
June 1 is Thursday and could be the end of Corey Davis’ tenure in New York. Once a prized free agent pickup from Tennessee, Davis has fallen down the depth chart in New York. The wideout is owed an $11 million base salary in the final year of his deal, but none of that money is guaranteed. The Jets can cut him to clear out cap space, but they’re likely hoping a team will deal with an injury and send them a draft pick to acquire the 2017 No. 5 pick.
New York is a 1.5-point home underdog for the Week 1 Monday night home opener vs. Buffalo, one of six prime-time games scheduled for the Jets. The teams split last year, with New York winning 20-17 at home in a big upset. The Jets defense shut down Josh Allen, Zach Wilson threw a touchdown pass and Greg Zuerlein kicked a go-ahead 28-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining.
The Jets last opened a season at home in primetime on Sept. 11, 2011, taking a 27-24 decision over the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets’ first regular-season game at MetLife Stadium — a 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13, 2010 — also marked the last time the team opened a season at home on Monday Night Football. The Bills went undefeated (5-0) in primetime games last season.
There is some historical significance for the Jets. On Sept. 21, 1970, the Jets and the Browns met at Cleveland Stadium for the debut of Monday Night Football. Nearly 53 years later, the Jets will again be featured under the Monday night spotlight as Rodgers, the future Hall of Famer who will wear No. 8, faces a Bills defense that finished second in scoring last season (17.9 PPG).
