2022-23 NFL Regular Season
- When: Sep. 8, 2022 – Jan. 8, 2023
Deshaun Watson gets a six game suspension
The Browns starting quarterback must sit out 6 games. At first, many believed the suspension was much less than it should have been.
But in reality, the suspension is probably exactly the right amount of games. Although many women claimed Deshaun had acted inappropriately, Houston authorities failed to charge the former Texan.
With no criminal charges it comes down to one side saying one thing and another saying the opposite. Those who hand down suspensions must take both sides’ word for it.
That puts disciplinarians in a tough position. Do they just write off anything Deshaun said? Or do they try to find a middle ground? 6 games seems fair.
Rumor has it, these 5 NFL coaches are on the hot seat
Per more than one NFL source, five coaches are on the hot seat. Three are obvious. Two aren’t.
Carolina coach Matt Rhule made the unfortunate decision of trading for Sam Darnold last season. That didn’t work out. So Rhule decided to trade for Baker Mayfield this season. If it doesn’t work out, Rhule is gone.
Pete Carroll is close to being an octogenarian. Now that Seattle is rebuilding, the Seahawks may want to start fresh with a new front office and new head coach.
In Washington, Ron Rivera hasn’t gotten the most he can from what ownership believes is a strong roster. This season, Carson Wentz will start in D.C. Rivera has one more season to prove he’s worth being the head man.
The other two coaches on the hot seat don’t make sense. Frank Reich has added stability to the Colts’ franchise. Yes, Indy didn’t make the playoffs last season, but that had a lot to do with Wentz being their QB instead of Ryan. Keeping Reich for another two to three years is what the Colts should do.
Mike McCarthy has turned the Cowboys into a talented, competitive team. Jerry Jones should realize that he hasn’t fielded a consistently competitive team since the early 1990s. If Jones fires McCarthy, he’ll have to start all over again.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross suspended
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross can’t be involved in any NFL related activities until October 17. Ross also had to pay a $1.5 million fine.
The problems for Ross don’t stem from the way he parted ways with head coach Brian Flores. It’s how Ross violated tampering rules while recruiting then Saints’ coach Sean Payton and then Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady.
In addition to the fine and suspension, the Dolphins must part with their 2023 first round selection, and 2024 third-round selection.
Rumor is the Patriots’ offense is a mess
Last season, Mac Jones’ success had a lot to do with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel. McDaniel took the head job with the Las Vegas Raiders.
So this season, Bill Belichick will leave offensive coordinator duties up to former defensive assistant Matt Patricia and Joe Judge. Per reports, it’s so far been a disaster.
New England’s offense is a mess. Changing offensive systems on your second year quarterback will almost never work out. The Patriots have time to fix the issue. Whether they do or not is a real question.
49ers resign Deebo to 3-year $73.5 million extension, turn attention to Jimmy G.
About a year ago, we recommended that the San Francisco 49ers trade Jimmy Garoppolo. Trading a player when interest is high is always better than waiting until interest wanes.
The 49ers decided to give it one more go with Jimmy G. It didn’t work out, Garoppolo got injured, and teams that were interested in the Super Bowl quarterback no longer are.
Now, heading into the first week of NFL preseason, Jimmy remains the highest-paid backup of every NFL team.
Garoppolo stands to make $26.5 million if he’s on San Francisco’s roster at the start of the season. The 49ers have said they won’t hand Jimmy to a team without compensation.
But if no team wants Garoppolo and his exorbitant contract, make no mistake, SF will cut him.
On a more positive note, Deebo Samuel and the 49ers are copasetic. Deebo signed a massive contract that includes incentives for him as a running back. A happy Samuel will make San Francisco’s offense one of the best in the league.
