The 2022 Davis Cup, the 110th edition of the international men’s team tennis event, began in March and is now narrowed down to eight teams competing in the quarterfinals in November.
Russia, which won last year’s Davis Cup, isn’t competing this year as both they and Belarus were banned from international competition due to the invasion of Ukraine. Serbia, which competed in the semifinals of last year’s event, is another noticeably absent team from the quarterfinals as they finished third in Group B.
The quarterfinals are scheduled for November 24 in Malaga, Spain. They will feature the following matches: Italy vs. the United States, Germany vs. Canada, Australia vs. the Netherlands, and Croatia vs. Spain.
Tennis Betting Opportunities and Analysis for the Upcoming 2022 Davis Cup Tournament
Alcaraz Leads Spain to First in Group B
Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open winner, became the youngest-ever world No. 1 last week as he reached the top of the ATP rankings at 19 years and four months old. He showed what could be considered fatigue following a grueling US Open (he had three consecutive five-set matches before the final against Casper Ruud) as he lost a game against Felix Auger-Aliassime on September 16 but bounced back the following day to secure first place in Group B for Spain.
Alcaraz defeated Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea 6-4, 7-6 (1) and saved all three break points he faced. Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Seong-chang Hong 6-1, 6-3 to secure the match victory for Spain.
Spain won seven of its nine matches and went 16-8 across 24 sets to earn first in the group. South Korea finished last with a set record of 7-14.
Auger-Aliassime Secures Spot for Canada
Auger-Aliassime, who had a frustrating summer despite lofty expectations, looked like the player many Canadian fans expected this past weekend. After beating Alcaraz, he scored an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia to book Canada’s spot in the quarterfinals.
Canada finished just ahead of Serbia with a 5-4 match victory and an 11-2 set record. Serbia, which defeated Canada 2-1 in the match, finished 5-4 in games and 10-10 in sets to narrowly miss out on second place in Group B.
“I was a bit tired, but pushing myself was all worth it,” Auger-Aliassime said following the victory. “I’m really happy that I came and played with the level I did to get Canada through to the quarters. I’m really happy for the team. In the end, it’s all worth it.”
Canada has historically not had much success in the Davis Cup but has been back in the World Group (the top division) since 2011. It reached the semifinals for the first time in 2013 and the finals for the first time in 2019. Auger-Aliassime was part of that team in 2019.
Americans Advance over Great Britain
After being eliminated from the round robin last year, the US is back in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup after finishing second in Group D with a 5-4 match record and 11-12 set record. The Netherlands finished first in the group.
The US defeated Great Britain and Kazakhstan 2-1 to secure its spot in the quarterfinals. While the US has won the Davis Cup a record 32 times, it seems unlikely this group makes it 33, although it is one of the best and brightest teams in a while. The US hasn’t won since 2007.
The four players representing the US this year are Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz, Jack Sock, and Rajeev Ram, the latter of whom was a doubles champion at the 2022 US Open.
