Alcaraz the Favorite

At MyBookie for this week, Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite again this week after capturing a title last week as a -150 favorite. He’s the top seed and the defending champion at this event. Alcaraz hadn’t won a title since the US Open and hadn’t played since November before running the table last week on clay in Buenos Aires.

Alcaraz has been dominating on clay with five titles in the last 12 months. The real question for the 19-year-old this week comes with his endurance. Injuries forced him to miss three months of action before returning last week, and his fitness in the South American heat could come into play this week.

Alcaraz is such a big favorite in the early rounds that he isn’t worth betting on. His first-round match for Tuesday has the Spaniard at -10000 on the MyBookie odds. Wait for the later rounds to grab value on Alcaraz.

Other Contenders

No. 2 seed Cameron Norrie is also formidable on clay, winning last season in Lyon. Last week he made it all the way to the finals in Buenos Aires before falling to Alcaraz. Norrie has No. 4 seed Francisco Cerundolo in his half of the draw, along with No. 7 seed Albert Ramos Vinolas.

Another clay court winner in this draw is Italian Lorenzo Musetti, but the No. 3 seed lost in the first round on Monday in straight sets to Nicolas Jarry. His loss leaves No. 6 Diego Schwartzman as the top competition to Alcaraz in the top half of the draw. Schwartzman won this event in 2018 and lost in the finals to Alcaraz last year.

Alcaraz and Schwartzman aren’t the only former winners in the field. Laslo Djere won the title here in 2019 and won his first-round match on Monday. He has a tough draw with Schwartzman and Alcaraz in his path to the final, while former champions Dominic Theim and Cristian Garin lost their first-round matches on Monday.

First Round Matchups

With Musetti upset in the first round, the other top players are on notice at the Rio Open. Clay courts can be the equalizer, with even the players used to the surface ripe for upset.

Ramos-Vinolas is one of the seeded players in action on Tuesday, and MyBookie has him at -124 to win his match against Tomas Etcheverry, who is -102. These two have played twice before, with Ramos-Vinolas winning both times on clay courts. Look for him to win again on Tuesday and move into the second round of the Rio Open.

Despite being the seeded player, Schwartzman is actually an underdog in the first round on Tuesday. The Argentinian is +124 against Dusan Lajovic, who is -163. These two haven’t faced off since 2020, but Schwartzman is 3-1 lifetime against Lajovic and should make it 4-1 on Tuesday with the plus odds money line as a solid bet.

Joining the Italian tennis star are Casper Ruud (no.8), Diego Schwartzman (no.15), Pablo Carreño Busta (no.16), and Cristian Garín (no.20). Rounding up the list of the top-eight seeded players are Lorenzo Sonego (no.22), Carlos Alcaraz (no.29), and Albert Ramos Viñolas (no.32).

Interestingly, the Rio Open has featured a different winner across the last seven iterations. What’s more, no player has managed to reach two finals to date, which is something the former champions in Cristian Garín, Diego Schwartzman, and Pablo Cuevas will look to change.

Players To Watch

• Matteo Berrettini

The no.1 seeded player of the 2022 Rio Open, Matteo Berrettini, will be under the spotlight as he looks to continue his strong start to the season. The Italian tennis star kicked off the 2022 season with a deep run at the 2022 Australian Open, where he made it all the way into the semi-finals, only to lose to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal (1-3).

Still, he had shown good qualities, with convincing wins against Monfils (3-2), Carreno (3-1), Alcaraz (3-2), Kozlov (3-1), and Nakashima (3-1).

Berrettini has been solid in recent years and sports a 66.67% career win rate on clay. In 2021, he went 14/4 on clay and 12/5 and 12/4 in the years prior, so he is clearly improving. But while he is the top-rated player and in excellent form, the field consists of other players who are more than capable of challenging him.

• Diego Schwartzman

Current world no.15, Diego Schwartzman has not been as impressive in Australia, where he crashed out of R2 against O’Connell (0-3). However, we would take his showings on hard courts with a grain of salt since they don’t in any way indicate how the Argentinian tennis star will do in Brazil.

There is no secret that Schwartzman isn’t a hard-court specialist (53.33% career win rate), but he tends to do much better on clay. Over his career, Schwartzman has won 66.28% clay-court matches, with his record across the last three years showing 12/8, 15/5, and 15/9.

Furthermore, he is 5/1 on clay courts in 2022. He has recently made two deep runs in Cordoba Open and Argentina Open, reaching the semis and finals, respectively. With the form Schwartzman has been showing, he is definitely a man to watch – and let’s not forget, he won the Rio Open in 2018.

• Carlos Alcaraz

When we talk clay-court specialists, Carlos Alcaraz deserves to be mentioned. Over his four-year career, Alcaraz has won an astounding 74.23% of clay-court matches, which is impressive, to say the least, and he was 22/7 and 29/7 in 2021 and 2020, which translates to a 78.5% win rate across the last two years.

Admittedly, he has yet to win Rio Open, but Alcaraz had appeared in the tournament only once – in 2020 when he lost in R2 against Coria. Still, there’s a reason to feel optimistic about the 18-year-old who enjoyed a solid start to the season reached R3 at AO, where he nearly won against Berrettini.

If Alcaraz can find his rhythm, he might surprise many and is undoubtedly a player to watch.
