Daniil Medvedev vs. Grigor Dimitrov
- 2019 US Open Odds: Grigor Dimitrov +140 / Daniil Medvedev -188
The 6’3” Dimitrov is a match away from the U.S. Open Finals. It’s incredible to think that Dimitrov can actually make it to the finals. Entering the U.S. Open, Grigor was a worse than +5000 choice to win the tournament. He didn’t even register on anybody’s radar.
Yet, here he is, a victory over Daniil Medvedev away from entering the finals of the biggest tournament of his life. Can he pull off another shocking victory after taking down Roger Federer in a 5-set battle in the quarterfinals?
He can, but he won’t. As well as Grigor Dimitrov has played, Daniil Medvedev has played better. Dimitrov outlasted Federer in the quarterfinals. But, Medvedev is 23-years-old and heads into the semifinals having beaten the very good Stanislas Wawrinka in his own 5-set battle royal.
Heading into the U.S. Open, Medvedev was the fourth choice after the Big 3. He had been playing better than any of the Big 3. Although he’s struggled in spots during the U.S. Open, he’s gotten it together when he’s had to. Dimitrov’s quest for glory ends on Friday with a loss to Daniil Medvedev.
US Open Men’s Semifinals Pick: Daniil Medvedev
Rafael Nadal vs. Matteo Berrettini
- 2019 US Open Odds: Rafael Nadal -2499 / Matteo Berrettini +744
Rafael Nadal might not even be fully aware that both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are no longer at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. That’s how dialed in the 2-seed on the men’s side has been in his last couple of matches played. Nadal beat a motivated Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Before that, he took down tough Marin Cilic.
Matteo Berrettini is a great story. Berrettini has hit the hardcourts an underdog in his last three matches. He beat all three of those opponents, Alexei Popyrin, Andrey Rublev, and Gael Monfils. The victory over Monfils was particularly exhilarating as the pair battled for 6 sets.
The matchup versus Monfils had to have exhausted Berrettini. So, not only does he face a legend on Friday, but he faces that legend at probably less than one-hundred percent energy-wise. Rafa should beat Matteo in 3 sets.
