While the 2023 Astana Open doesn’t have any ATP Finals implications, there’s more than $1 million in prize money available for the 28 players in the Kazakhstan tournament. The top eight seeds are all ranked inside of the top 40 in the world rankings, with Tallon Griekspoor, world No. 24, as the top seed. 

This is the fourth edition of the ATP 250 level tournament. The event takes place from September 27 to October 3 at the National Tennis Center.

Astana Open History

An indoor hard courts tournament, the Astana Open began in 2020 and was created by the ATP Tour as part of efforts to make up for events canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

John Millman won the inaugural event, and Kwon Soon-woo won in 2021. Novak Djokovic was last year’s champion when it was a 500-level event and attracted a much deeper field.

The Top Half of the Draw

As the top seed in the tournament, Griekspoor receives an automatic bye into the second round, where he will face the winner of a qualifier and Roberto Carballes Baena.

Fourth seed Jiri Lehecka receives the other bye in the top half of the draw, which also includes talented players like Sebastian Korda, Botic Van De Zandschulp, and Laslo Djere. 

Griekspoor is the obvious candidate to get through the top half of the draw. The Dutch player won his first two titles on the ATP Tour this season and is coming off a 2-1 performance at the Davis Cup. Djere, the seventh seed, is a strong candidate to make the semifinals. He reached the third round of the US Open before losing to Djokovic in five sets.

The Bottom Half of the Draw

Alexander Bublik will be the clear home crowd favorite, but the Kazakh player has struggled this season. After a breakthrough year in 2022, Bublik is just 16-23 this season.

He’s tough to project at this point, as the pressure of trying to win in his home country could either motivate him toward a resurgence or be too much to handle.

Sebastian Baez and Adrian Mannarino are better betting options to take the bottom half of the draw. Baez also had a decent showing at the US Open, losing in the third round to runner-up Daniil Medvedev. However, don’t count out veterans Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka. 

Astana Open Finals Prediction

While it’s not exactly a bold prediction, expect Griekspoor to meet Baez in the final. Both players only have to win three matches to win their half of the draw and have the benefit of added rest.

They’re also playing quite well at the moment and have shown the ability to keep up with some of the top players on the ATP Tour.

Karastev and Bublik Expected to Shine

Home favorite, Alexander Bublik, enters the 2021 Astana Open as one of the favorites to win the title, albeit he is bound to face tough resistance from Russia’s Aslan Karatsev. Bublik enters the tournament as the second seed and world no.34, having struggled to achieve much on the year.

Bublik was last seen at the 2021 U.S. Open, where he won against Yannick Hanfmann (6-0, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1) in the first round but was unable to make it past R2, where he lost against Jack Sock (6-7, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6). Prior to his early exit from the U.S. Open, Bublik also attended the Winston-Salem Open, where he lost against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori (2-6, 6-7) in Round of 32.

Bublik’s most notable accomplishment on the year came in July when he reached the semi-finals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship, where he lost against Kevin Anderson (6-4, 6-7, 5-7). He also made it to round three of Wimbledon but proved to be no match for Hubert Hurkacz (3-6, 4-6, 2-6).

Karasev, meanwhile, has achieved much more of late, having reached the third round of the 2021 U.S. Open. However, that remains his only notable accomplishment since May, when he made it to Round of 16 in the Italian Open and Madrid Open. 

Karasev’s only tournament win of the season came in March when he won in Dubai with a 6-3, 6-2 against Lloyd Harris. Still, the Russian tennis player will receive a lot of respect for his semi-finals run at the 2021 Australian Open; however, he hasn’t achieved much since and has already lost against Bublik (4-6, 3-6) in May.

Serbian Duo Looking To Cause Some Chaos

World no.36 Dušan Lajović and world no. 37 Filip Krajinović enter the 2021 Astana Open as third- and fourth-seeded players and strong candidates for the title. Lajović has had a strong start to the season, having reached R4 of the 2021 Australian Open, and while he was unable to emulate that success in any of the succeeding Grand Slams, he has achieved a lot in other tournaments.

Lajović has made it to Round of 16 in Canada, where he lost to Casper Ruud, and has reached quarter-finals in Germany Open, Croatia Open, and Belgrade.

Similarly, Krajinović has enjoyed some success on the year. The 29-year-old made it to the quarter-finals in Kitzbuhel Open and Croatia Open.

Krajinović has also reached the finals at the 2021 German open, where he had to admit defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta (2-6, 4-6). Regardless, he has impressed many with his 2-1 win against Stefanos Tsistipas in the quarter-finals.

Defending Champion, Millman Returns

John Millman will return to Kazahstan to defend his 2020 Astana Open title. Although John Millman is only a fifth-seeded player and world no.43, he was a fourth-seeded player and world no.44 last year, when he won the title, suggesting that he might do it again.

Last year, Millman breezed through the tournament, and while he had faced some resistance in the semi-finals (2-1 against Frances Tiafoe), the Australian tennis player made easy work of Adrian Mannarino in the finals, which he won with 7-5, 6-1.

The 2020 Astana Open marked Millman’s first ATP Tour title. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old has now won a single tournament since, nor has he reached a final.

Millman’s most notable accomplishment of 2021 came in April when he made it to the quarter-finals of the Bavarian International, where he lost against Ruud (3-6, 4-6). Millman emulated that run in August when he reached the final eight at the Washington Open but proved to be no match for Jenson Brooksby (1-6, 2-6).

Given his lack of success over the year, it seems highly unlikely that Millman will manage to defend his title. Still, he didn’t achieve much in 2020 either, yet he still came out on top in Kazahstan.

Six of the Top 10 players in the FedEx ATP Rankings will be in action this week as the 2020 Erste Bank Open goes down live from Vienna, Austria and the brand new Astana Open makes its debut. World No. 1 Nova Djokovic heads up the loaded field at the ATP 500 event in Vienna while the lesser Astana Open, an ATP 250 event, gets underway on Monday, October 26 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan with world No. 28 Benoit Paire as the top seed.

The Astana Open is the last of four new ATP 250 events that were added to the 2020 schedule as tennis continued its return following suspension of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event features home grown talent like— including Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin and a handful of other stars looking to claim a tour-level crown in Kazakhstan. In addition to the Astana Open, the revised schedule also includes two consecutive new ATP 250 events in Cologne (Germany, Indoor Hard) and Sardinia (Italy, Clay). All have been issued as single-year licenses for 2020.

Now, let’s get to two value-packed matches that will both be going down on Tuesday, October 27.

29-year-old American and world No. 48 Tennys Sandgren is an uninspiring 8-11 on the year with no titles. He’s also just 39-54 in his ATP career with one title. Sandgren comes into this event desperate for a win after suffering consecutive first round losses at Roland Garros and at St. Petersburg two weeks ago. 27-year-old Czech republic native and world No. 66, Jiri Vesely is a solid 11-5 on the year with one title in Pune, India that he claimed in February.

Prediction

While these two players have never faced off before and Vesely is the underdog at +114, I like the 6’6″ Vesely to pick up the big win as an underdog over the 6’2″ Sandgren. Despite the fact that Sandgren has beaten the likes of big named players like Matteo Berrettini, Sam Querrey and Fabio Fognini, among others, Vesely is playing close to home and generally excels when he’s playing in Eastern Europe.

Sandgren lost to world No. 153 Daniel Ehlan Galan, world No. 117 Aslan Karatsev and world No. 82 Pierre-Hugues Humbert in his last three matches, so it’s not like his higher ranking in this affair means a whole lot. I like the fact that Vesely has gone 6-3 over his last nine matches while taking world No. 18 Karen Kachanov to four sets in the French Open before bowing out. I’m going with Vesely in a three-set thriller!

23-year-old South African and world No. 80 Lloyd Harris has gone 12-11 on the year with no titles, but he’s looked fantastic in reaching at least the quarters in two straight events and three of his last four overall. Lloyd took out the likes of Kyle Edmund and Steve Johnson in Cologne two weeks ago before falling to Alexander Zverev in three sets in the quarterfinals. He backed the run up by reaching the quarters in Antwerp while beating talented American Taylor Fritz along the way.

27-year-old Belarus native and world No. 83 Egor Gerasimov has gone 10-8 on the year with zero titles. He lost three consecutive first round matches in Rome, Roland Garros and St. Petersburg before making a run to the round of 16 in Cologne where he ended up losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in a three-set thriller.

Prediction

Gerasimov owns a 2-0 mark against Harris in head-to-head meetings. he beat Lloyd 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the Karshi Challenger event in 2018 and backed that up with a 7-5, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) win in their last meeting at the 2019 U.S. Open. With that said, I’m going with Gerasimov to get it done again, although I’m thinking this affair is going to turn into another knock-down, drag-out three-set thriller!
