Formerly known as the Chennai Open, the Tata Open Maharashtra is one of three ATP events being contested during the first week of the 2023 season. While some of the world’s top players, including Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, prepare for the Australian Open in Adelaide, several others are hoping to make their mark in South Asia’s only ATP Tour event. The Tata Open Maharashtra, founded in 1996, is played on hard courts in India.
João Sousa defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the finals of last year’s event, while Jiří Veselý was the champion in 2019. The tournament wasn’t held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stan Wawrinka is the all-time leader in titles with four, while Marin Cilic and Carlos Moya are the only other players to win the tournament multiple times. Let’s take a look at the following analysis for your Betting Odds.
Cilic Looking for Third Title
Cilic is the betting favorite to win the tournament, and with good reason. Not only is he the top seed, but he also has an extremely favorable draw in a relatively weak field compared to the Adelaide International 1 in Australia.
Cilic received a bye through to the Round of 16, where he will face the winner of Roberto Carballes Baena and Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The other top seeds to have a bye-through to the Round of 16 are Botic Van De Zandschulp, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Sebastian Baez.
Cilic, 34, is the world No. 17 and a 20-time winner on the ATP Tour. He lost three of his last four matches to close out 2022 but is still capable of winning any tournament in which he participates due to his booming serve and experience. He didn’t win in 2022 but won two titles in 2021.
Ruusuvuori Seeking Redemption and First Title
Ruusuvuori, a 23-year-old rising star from Finland, is another worthy player to back when betting on the Tata Open Maharashtra. Now at a career-best world No. 40, the Finnish star is the third seed in the tournament and was runner-up in 2022, where he lost a competitive three-set affair to Sousa.
Ruusuvuori is 69-64 overall on the ATP Tour but 55-42 on hard courts. He struggles on clay and grass, so this event is one in which he has a real shot at claiming his first title, especially considering his results here last year. He went 35-29 last season and picked up wins against higher-ranked opponents like Frances Tiafoe, Hubert Hurkacz, Diego Schwartzman, and Alexander Bublik.
Other than reaching the finals in India, his best result last year was the semifinals in Stockholm, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Other Notable Players to Watch
A 2021 Australian Open semifinalist, Aslan Karatsev is the eighth seed in the event and faces Pablo Andujar in the Round of 32. The Russian, who reached a career-high of world No. 14 after last year’s Australian Open, is now the world No. 59 after going 17-29 last season. He did, however, win last January in Sydney.
Other notable names in the draw include Filip Krajinovic, Tallon Griekspoor, and Tim van Rijthoven.
