There are three ATP tour tournaments this week but only one on clay, the ATP 250 Chile Open. The top players in the world are not at the Chile Open in Santiago, as they have mostly split between the two ATP 500 events in Dubai and Mexico.

The absence of players like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev provides a great opportunity for the seeded players in Chile to win a title. This is also the final clay court tournament in South America before the tour heads to Indian Wells, Miami, and Europe.

Tennis Predictions: ATP 250 Chile Open

The Favorites

Italian Lorenzo Musetti is the top seed in Santiago, and he’s a well-known clay expert. He has a bye into the second round of the 28-player field and won’t see another seed until at least the quarterfinal. Defending champion Pedro Martinez is an unseeded player in Musetti’s half of the draw as well.

Francisco Cerundolo is the No. 2 seed in Chile despite losing in the second round last week in Buenos Aires. To reach the final, Cerundolo will likely have to beat No. 3 seed Sebastian Baez, who made the finals last year. Baez reached the quarterfinals last week in Buenos Aires.

The fourth seed is Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, who has had a rough clay court season. Schwartzman has never reached the final in Chile, and he lost his first match in each clay court tournament this year. He could be in trouble in the second round against Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who will have the crowd behind him.

Take Martinez

The defending champion Pedro Martinez is not only unseeded in Santiago, but he’s also a first-round underdog. Martinez is +155 against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in the first round. Martinez beat Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2 in this same tournament last year and should get a win again this time around.

Hanfmann is 0-2 overall this season and ranked 137th in the world. He had to win qualifying matches just to get into Santiago after falling in straight sets in his last tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Martinez is ranked 76th in the world and should get past Hanfmann in the first round.

Garin is the Pick

Two wild cards meet up in the first round as 2021 Chile Open winner Cristian Garin takes on former Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem. Thiem is just 1-4 on the season, with a first-round win last week in Buenos Aires before a 6-4, 6-4 loss in the round of 16.

Garin is a native of Santiago and will have the home-court fans behind him. He’s +118 as an underdog at MyBookie to beat Thiem, who is -142. These two haven’t met since 2020, when Thiem won on the hard courts in his native Austria.

Now they are in Garin’s hometown and on his preferred clay courts. Thiem is still working his way back from injury and not the player he was two years ago. Look for Garin to pull off the upset and advance to the round of 16.

Cristian Garin Looks for Strong Performance 

Cristian Garin of Chile will participate in the Chile Dove Men+Care Open on home territory, hoping to reclaim his peak form. In Santiago in 2021, the 25-year-old defeated Facundo Bagnis in the final to win the championship. Garin’s greatest performance so far this year came in the Australian Open when he reached the third round. The top seed, who is 5-1 in this competition, will open his campaign against Chilean wild card Alejandro Tabilo or a qualifier in the ATP 250 clay-court tournament. 

Alejandro Tabilo on the Rise

If Tabilo advances to the second round, the home crowd will be treated to a must-see match. The home favorite has gradually grown over the last several months and is on the verge of breaking into the Top 100. The southpaw, who is now ranked No. 111 in the ATP Rankings, reached his maiden ATP Tour final in Cordoba. He began his season by competing for his country in the ATP Cup and qualifying for the main draw of the Australian Open, where he was defeated in the first round by Alcaraz.

Milan Players Look to Capture Title

Three players from the 2021 Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals will compete in Santiago for the title: Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez, and Holger Rune. Cerundolo won his first ATP Tour championship in Cordoba last year, while Baez and Rune are attempting to win their first trophy at this level. 

The Brazilians Pursue a Second Doubles Title

Last year in Cordoba, Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves won their first ATP Tour doubles title together. As the top seeds in Santiago this week, they will be chasing their second tour-level championship. Pedro Martinez and Andrea Vavassori are the second seeds. Maximo Gonzalez and Nicolas Jarry are another pair to keep an eye on. Gonzalez has won 11 tour-level doubles titles, including three with Simone Bolelli last year.

Spanish Standouts Run Deep

Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Pedro Martinez, and Jaume Munar are looking for a deep run in a quality field. In February, Ramos-Vinolas won his fourth tour-level victory in Cordoba, and he was also a semi-finalist in Santiago (2020). In his opening match, the second seed will face either Juan Manuel Cerundolo or Carlos Taberner.

Martinez, the fourth seed, is making his clay-court debut and may face Munar in his opening encounter if the World No. 89 wins Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros. Munar has never advanced past the first round in his two prior outings in Chile. Martinez has won at least one match in each of his five competitions this season.
