The second round of the 2023 French Open has now concluded, with both the men’s and women’s matches set for the third round. The first week of action has given us some great matches and notable upsets, including world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev losing to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round. 

Another top player in the men’s draw – Jannik Sinner – went down in a major upset on Thursday. Daniel Altmaier beat the young Italian 6-7 (7), 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Alex De Minaur, the 18th seed, also lost on Thursday, leaving the bottom quarter of the draw wide open for the likes of Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric, or Frances Tiafoe. 

Other notable third-round matches in the men’s and women’s draws include Lorenzo Musetti vs. Cam Norrie, Carlos Alcaraz vs. Denis Shapovalov, Elena Rybakina vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Elise Mertens vs. Jessica Pegula.

Lorenzo Musetti beat Cam Norrie in their only matchup earlier this season in Spain, but it was in three sets. This one projects to be a back-and-forth battle that could go five sets. Norrie, who has reached the third round at Roland Garros for the third consecutive year, is looking to get into the fourth round for the first time. Norrie is 18-6 on clay this season after wins over Lucas Pouille and Benoit Paire in the last two rounds.

Musetti, meanwhile, is just 11-8 on clay this year and has arguably had an easier path to the third round, beating Mikael Ymer and Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets. He may be unprepared for what should be a hard-fought battle against Norrie.

Sloane Stephens is enjoying somewhat of a career renaissance at the French Open. She hasn’t had a great season prior to Roland Garros, and it’s unlikely she goes on a deep run.

Big names are materialized by titles and trophies. With a US Open title already in his collection, Medvedev had an unforgettable 2021 by earning his first grand slam title. This has allowed him to remain number two in the ATP rankings. 

Along with Medvedev comes German native Alexander Zverev. With no major titles on his resume, Zverev has also accomplished ranking among the tennis elite. Currently, as third overall in the ATP rankings, Zverev might just become one of those key figures that change the course of top stars aiming for the finals. 

With raw young talent following more veteran players, some potential duels could truly change the course of the tournament. However, to experts, the numbers speak for themselves, and top seeds remain the number one choice for all tennis fans to follow. 

With a combined Grand Slam victory and an Olympic gold medal, Zverev is just beginning his stance among the tennis elite. Even day three of the French Open did not finish without big names exiting the tournament, and while upset losses are relatively common, there seems to be more of them than usual this year. The 10th Seed Bencic Exits French Open

Belinda Bencic became the latest big name to exit the French Open after a 2-6, 2-6 loss to world no.37 Daria Kasatkina. With that win, the Russian secured her fourth R3 appearance after failing to do so in her last two trips to France.

For Bencic, this marks her third R2 exit from the French Open and her first since 2018. The Swiss’ best placement in France came in 2018, when she reached R3, only to get eliminated by Donna Vekic (1-6, 4-6). She has since gone R2 in 2019 and was absent from the competition in 2020.

Kasatkina will now face off against world no.54 Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea, who bested Martina Trevisan (2-1) in R2. The two will clash on Thursday, June 4th.

Zverev and Ruud into the next round

Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud have made it into the third round of the competition with commanding victories on Wednesday, thus avoided getting added to the list of favorites who crashed out early on.

Zverev faced off against world no. 182 Roman Safiullin, who put up a good fight in front of 1,000 masked fans, who cheered him on as he took on one of the top-five betting favorites at the tournament.

Still, Zverev ended up coming out ahead with 7-6, 6-3, and 7-6 after near two and a half hours on the court. He has had to navigate through some tricky moments in the second and third set, but overall, Zverev kept the match in his control.

Ruud made it past Kamil Majchrzak with 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 without any issues. The two battled it out for nearly two hours (1:55), but not once did it seem like the world no. 16 wasn’t in control.

This ends Majchrzak’s run at his second French Open, ending it with his career-best placement. In his debut in 2020, the Pole crashed out of the first round with a 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 loss to Karen Abgarovich Khanchanov.

Petra Kvitova Out with an Injury

The two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from the French Open after sustaining an ankle injury. As stated by the Czech, she fell after Sunday’s first-round victory over Greet Minnen and cannot continue competing in France.

Her second-round opponent Elena Vesnina has received a direct bye into the final 32. Kvitova’s injury secured Vesnina her tied-best placement in France after reaching the third round only twice across 14 starts.

For Kvitova, this is her earliest exit from the French Open in the last four years. Since her R2 departure in 2017, Kvitova reached R3 in 2018 and made it to the semi-finals in 2020.

This weekend saw a bunch of wild results take place, particularly on the women’s WTA side of the third and final grand slam event of 2020. On Sunday, world No. 2 and top-seeded Simona Halep, saw her bid to win her second French Open go up in flames by suffering a stunning 1-6, 2-6 blowout loss against 19-year-old world No. 54 Iga Swiatek.

“For me, it’s not a surprise, these results,” Halep said afterward. “Because everyone at this level is playing really well. And in the fourth round of a Grand Slam, it’s not a surprise anymore because if you are there it means that you have a great game. So I believe that every match [opens at] level and it’s about the day that you play.”

Shortly after Halep’s stunning defeat, fifth-seeded Kiki Bertens saw her French Open title hopes ended by suffering a 6-4, 6-4 loss against unseeded world No. 159 Martina Trevisan. The unheralded qualifier enters the quarterfinals on fire, having already dispatched Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari.

“I think [Trevisan] has the confidence of winning a few matches in a row already, [and having] done well,” said Bertens. “And I think, with that, no one really has played a lot, so I think then you can see that [anything] can happen in a tournament like this.”

Illustrating the wild results on the women’s side is the fact that there were just six seeded players remaining entering the round of 16, marking the fewest figure since the 32-seed format was introduced in 2001. Now, the unheralded Swiatek will battle Trevisan in one quarterfinal matchup while No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina takes on the unseeded Nadia Podoroska in another quarterfinal pairing.

No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova battles veteran Laura Siegemund in another quarterfinal pairing while looking to reach the semis at Roland Garros for the first time in her career. The 2020 quarterfinals marks the first time two qualifiers have advanced this far in the draw at Roland Garros since 1978.

“Well, for me it’s like a dream,” Podoroska said following the win. “Like I said the other days, I always dream[ed of] being here, playing these kind of tournaments, and for being my first time here, I am very happy.”

The 19-year-old Poland native Swiatek and 26-year-old Italian, Trevisan have split two career meetings. Trevisan took the first meeting 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at the $25,000+H Warsaw event in 2017 on clay. Swiatek recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals in Birmingham last year on grass.

Still, while Swiatek too out the prohibitive favorite in smacking Simona Halep around in her last match, I think Trevisan has been more impressive in dispatching the likes of Coco Gauff, the dangerous Maria Sakkari and Bertens in her last three matches. With Trevisan beating Swiatek on clay once before, I’ve got to believe she’s got a winning formula to get it done again despite being a convincing +382 underdog. I feel an upset brewing in this meeting!

On the men’s ATP side of the event, No. 6 seed Alex Zverev suffered a surprising  6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss against 19-year-old Jannik Sinner. With the win, Sinner became the youngest man to reach the quarterfinals of a major since world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in 2006.

Afterward, Zverev later said he was “completely sick” and had been dealing with a fever and struggling to breathe. He said he shouldn’t have played and refused to answer a question about testing for COVID-19. In more men’s action, 12-time champ Rafael Nadal continued his quest for his first major of the year by dispatching young American Sebastian Korda 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. Reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem needed five sets, a rain delay and over three hours to hold off unseeded Hugo Gaston while streaking No. 12 seed Diego Schwartzman got past Lorenzo Sonego 6-1, 6-3,6-4.

In Tuesday’s men’s quarterfinals, the red-hot Schwartzman will take on two-time French Open runner-up and No. 3 seed, Thiem while the unseeded Jannik Sinner looks to pull off the huge upset over Nadal.

Thiem and Schwartzman have met eight times with Thiem holding a decisive 6-2 career edge. While Thiem has won each of the last three meetings, including a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win at the 2020 ATP Cup, Schwartzman did manage to beat the No. 2 seed on clay in the semifinals in Buenos Aires last year.

While Thiem and Schwartzman have never met at a Grand Slam event and Thiem is coming off his first grand slam title at last month’s U.S. Open, Schwartzman smacked the incomparable Rafael Nadal around en route to a stunning 6-2, 7-5 win in the quarterfinals in Rome last month before losing to Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-3 in the finals. Schwartzman is a blistering 8-1 in his last 9 matches and won’t be afraid of the moment of being in a grand slam quarterfinal.

With Thiem going the distance in his last match and likely being exhausted at some point in this match, I feel a big-time upset brewing – even if Thiem was my pre-tournament pick to win it all. I’m going with Diego Schwartzman to get it done on Tuesday in a five-set thriller!
