ATP 2023 Hamburg Open Odds Analysis, Betting Favorites, and Predictions

ATP 2023 Hamburg Open Odds, Analysis, Betting Favorites, and Predictions

Monday begins a busy and exciting week of tennis as we push toward the home stretch and the final Grand Slam – the US Open – of the season.

While most of the top Americans are in the US playing on hard courts at the ATP 250 Atlanta Open, most of the world’s top male and female players are in Germany for the Hamburg European Open, played on clay courts.

The men’s draw features a solid field with top players such as Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, and last year’s champion Lorenzo Musetti.

That said, let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Hamburg European Open tournament so you can bet against the ATP betting lines.

Hamburg Open Past Champions

Musetti, an unseeded entry in last year’s tournament, played superb tennis to win against a loaded field that included world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, Rublev, and Diego Schwartzman. Musetti beat Alcaraz in three sets in the final.

Pablo Carreno Busta won in 2021 and Rublev won in 2020. Other past champions include Nikoloz Basilashvili (2019 and 2018), Rafael Nadal (2015 and 2008), and Gilles Simon (2011).

A Look at the Draw

As an ATP 500 event with 32 players as opposed to 28, there’s no automatic second-round byes for the top four seeds. This leaves a few intriguing upset possibilities as Ruud, Rublev, Musetti, and Zverev all have to work to advance to the next round.

Ruud, interestingly beat Musetti in the semifinals of the Nordea Open last week before losing to Rublev in the final, takes on Sebastian Baez in the opening round.

Others in the top half of the draw include Zverev, who takes on Alex Molcan in the opening round, as well as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Miomir Kecmanovic. Luca Van Assche defeated fellow French player Alexandre Muller early in first-round action on Monday to advance to the second round.

The bottom half of the draw features Rublev, Musetti, Tomas Etcheverry, and Francisco Cerundolo, among others. Musetti has a decent path to repeating as champion with a first-round match against Mikael Ymer and likely quarter-final opponents, including Laslo Djere, Etcheverry, and Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Hamburg Open First-Round Predictions

Daniel Altmaier (-163) vs. Richard Gasquet (+130)

If you’re looking for a first-round match with a strong upset possibility, this is one that stands out. Richard Gasquet is not only more experienced than Altmaier but is 1-0 against him in his career, beating him in straight sets on clay in the first round in Parma in May 2021.

Altmaier is just 8-14 on the ATP Tour this season, while Gasquet is 12-17. Gasquet, however, has wins over the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Casper Ruud (-400) vs. Sebastian Baez (+300)

There’s not much of an upset possibility here, but it’s certainly an opportunity to hammer Ruud, as -400 isn’t terrible odds for one of the top clay court players in the world. Ruud, the world No. 4, is 26-14 this season and coming off of a finals appearance last week.

He was also a finalist at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year. Baez has lost three matches in a row and is now outside of the top 60 with a 2023 record of 16-18.
