The Japan Open, also known as the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championship for sponsorship reasons, began on Monday at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo. It’s the 48th edition of the outdoor hard courts tournament, which runs until October 22. It’s one of three ATP events this week, along with the European Open and BNP Paribas Open.
There’s 500 ranking points on the line for the winner and more than $2 million in prize money up for grabs.
Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Japan Open tournament so you can bet against the ATP Odds.

Japan Open Past Champions
American Taylor Fritz won last year’s Japan Open, the first held since 2019 due to the pandemic. Fritz beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe in consecutive tiebreakers in the final.
Novak Djokovic won in 2019, beating John Millman in the final. Other past champions include Daniil Medvedev (2018), Nick Kyrgios (2016), Stan Wawrinka (2015), and Andy Murray (2011).
The Top Seeds
Eight of the top 15 players in the world are in Tokyo for the Japan Open, including 2022 champion Fritz, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev, and Alex de Minaur. Fritz (No. 9), Ruud (No. 10), and Zverev (No. 7) are all competing for one of the final spots in the Nitto ATP Finals in November.
Unfortunately for Zverev, it’s looking less likely that he’ll play his way into the finals as he was upset in straight sets early Monday morning by Aussie Jordan Thompson.
Fritz, despite being the defending champion and top seed in the tournament, has a tough first-round match against Cam Norrie, while Ruud is scheduled to play Japanese wild card Yosuke Watanuki.
In other early action, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (No. 15) defeated Aleksandar Vukic in the first round and advanced to play Sebastian Ofner, who beat Christopher O’Connell in the second round. Mackenzie McDonald also won his first-round match.
Tuesday’s Japan Open Best Bets
Taylor Fritz (-200) vs. Cam Norrie (+162)
Fritz and Norrie are very familiar with each other, having played 12 matches in their careers. They’ve each won six matches, with Norrie winning most recently at the United Cup in Australia earlier this year.
They’ve largely alternated wins, so it’s likely that Fritz, the defending champion in Tokyo, will get his turn tomorrow. Norrie has never played in Japan.
Fritz is 51-21 this season and is the first American man to win at least 50 matches since Andy Roddick in 2007. He’s also just sitting outside of the top eight and could overtake Holger Rune for the No. 8 spot with an impressive showing in Tokyo.

Zhizhen Zhang (+150) vs. Hubert Hurkacz (-188)
This match is scheduled for early Wednesday morning in Japan or 10:35 p.m. ET Tuesday night. The two days off will be beneficial for Hurkacz, who moved up to No. 11 in the ATP Live Race to Turin with his win at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
He’ll still likely need another tournament win or a couple more strong showings to crack the top eight. His first-round opponent, Zhizhen Zhang, is playing some of the best tennis of his career.
Zhang has beaten opponents like Ruud and Tomas Etcheverry in the last month and is coming off of a Round of 16 exit at the Shanghai Masters, where he coincidentally lost to Hurkacz in a back-and-forth match 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). He’s 0-2 against Hurkacz, but he is a strong upset candidate for the first round in Tokyo.
