Tata Open Maharashtra Odds & Picks for Round of 16, Monday Betting Recap

The only South Asian stop on the ATP Tour, the Tata Open Maharashtra, is almost through first-round play as of Monday night. The tournament, formerly held in Chennai, has been played in India every year since 1996, with the exception of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Past champions include Joao Sousa (2022), Jiri Vesely (2019), Roberto Bautista Agut (2017), and Stan Wawrinka, who won three years in a row from 2014 to 2016. This year’s field is headlined by two-time winner Marin Cilic, last year’s runner-up Emil Ruusuvuori, Jenson Brooksby, and Filip Krajinovic. Let’s see what went down on Monday and two great Round of 16 matchups so you don’t miss your chance to bet on the ATP Odds.

Tennis Betting Preview and Odds for the ATP 250: Tata Open Maharashtra

Monday Recap

The Round of 32 began on Monday and featured a pair of upsets. Laslo Djere defeated fifth-seed Alex Molcan 6-2, 6-4, while Tallon Greikspoor beat seventh-seed Jaume Munar 6-4, 7-5. Djere, a 27-year-old native of Serbia, is a two-time ATP Tour winner but was the world No. 70 heading into the tournament. Griekspoor is the world No. 95 and lost seven of his last eight games before the Tata Open Maharashtra.

Matchup Previews

  • Marin Cilic (-450) vs Roberto Carballes Baena (+333)

Cilic, who won the tournament in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010, begins his quest for three titles on Wednesday with a scheduled Round of 16 matchups against Roberto Carballes Baena, who earned his spot in the round with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over fellow Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Carballes Baena, the world No. 74, is 74-96 in his career in matches on the ATP Tour and has never played against Cilic.

Cilic should have no trouble advancing here, considering his prior history at the event and his success on the hard courts. Overall, hes 247-143 in his career on hard court while Carballes Baena, known more for his clay proficiency, is 27-42 in his career on hard court. Expect a two-set victory for Cilic, which pays out -138.

  • Benjamin Bonzi (+130) vs Emil Ruusuvuori (-163)

Ruusuvuori, a 23-year-old Finnish player, begins 2023 at a career-best world No. 40 after an inspiring finish to his 2022 season. He was runner-up at the event last year and has yet to win his first career ATP Tour title, so he’ll be extra motivated in his second-round match Wednesday against Benjamin Bonzi.

Bonzi, however, brings a lot of momentum into the Round of 16 following a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Tseng Chun-Hsin. Bonzi and Ruusuvuori have played twice before on the ATP Tour and split the two meetings. Ruusuvuori won at Astana in 2021 after Bonzi retired, while Bonzi’s win came on clay in 2020, so that’s almost irrelevant here, especially considering Ruusuvuori is the better hardcourt player.

While Bonzi is about as tough a second-round opponent as there is for the favorites in this tournament, expect Ruusuvuori to win in two or three sets. This could be the start of a breakthrough year for the talented Finn.
