Golf Betting Preview for the 2022 PGA Tour Fortinet Championship Event

Overview

The tournament first became a part of the PGA Tour schedule in 2007 when it was formerly known as the Fry’s Electronic Open. Since 2013, when the Tour began the new season in the fall, the tournament has served as the opening event of the season.

Max Homa is the defending champion after securing one of two victories last season here. Homa’s 19-under par four-day total was the second lowest score since the tournament’s inception. Maverick McNealy was runner-up, finishing one-shot shy of Homa.

The winner of the tournament receives 500 FedEx Cup points and $1.44 million of the $8 million dollar purse. The tournament purse was bumped up by $1 million dollars between 2021 and 2022.

The Field

The field of 156 players embark on racking up as many FedEx Cup points as possible, while many of the top names in the game use this period to enjoy time away from the game. Hideki Matsuyama highlights the field of President’s Cup participants who will use this week as a tune-up before heading to Quail Hollow next week.

Homa returns to defend his title along with last year’s runner-up McNealy. Two-time winner Brendan Steele along with past winners Stewart Cink, Cameron Champ, and Kevin Tway, look to rekindle the magic.

This week will also usher in many of the Korn Ferry Tour graduates from last season, including Justin Suh, who led the Points List. MJ Daffue, 33 years old, and Erik Barnes, 34 year old, begin their PGA Tour rookie campaign.

Other notables in the field include Rickie Fowler and Kyle Westmoreland, the first Air Force Academy graduate to play on Tour.

Silverado Country Club (North Course)

The course opened in 1955 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. with a redesign by Johnny Miller in 2011. A traditional par-72, the course runs over 7,100 yards in length.

Located in the heart of California’s wine country, the course presents a challenge for players with mature trees lining undulated fairways and challenging green complexes. Averaging scoring for the tournament has been right around par since the tournament’s debut in 2014.

Betting Odds

Homa (+1400) is the betting favorite over at mybookie.ag as he aims to defend his title. The 31-year-old four-time PGA winner enters the new season off his first trip to the TOUR Championship.

Matsuyama follows closely behind at +1650 as he gets ready for next week’s President’s Cup. He is the highest ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings in the Fortnite field.

Rounding out the top five favorites is Canadian Corey Conners (+1700), McNealy at +2400, and last year Rookie of the Year nominee Sahith Theegala (+2700). Theegala made 26 of 32 cuts during his rookie season, compiling five top-10 finishes with a T2 at the Travelers Championship in June.
