Players To Watch

The 2022 Men’s Clay Court Championship is slated for April 2-10 at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas. It will mark the 52nd running of the tournament, which was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID. Cristian Garin is the defending champion and will attend the tournament.

Even though he had proven before that he could deliver in Houston, we’re mostly interested in Casper Ruud, Taylor Harry Fritz, Reilly Opelka, and John Isner as the main four players you should keep an eye on.

  • Casper Ruud

Casper Ruud is currently ranked no.8 in the world and owns a very impressive 13-3 record ahead of the ATP Houston, with 8-2 on hard, 1-1 on indoor hard, and 4-0 on clay courts.

Over the 2022 season, Ruud has already proven he has what it takes to compete for top honors, having reached R3 at Indian Wells, SF in Miami Open, and won in Buenos Aires.

Moreover, he has won seven titles in his career, one on hard courts and seven on clay courts, which is definitely something to keep in mind ahead of the 2022 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship.

  • Taylor Harry Fritz

Ranked no.13 in the world, Taylor Harry Fritz is 16-5 on the season and had played his last match back on March 26, when he lost against Miomir Kecmanovic in the fourth round of the Miami Open. Although a devastating defeat, Fritz has achieved a lot so far.

Besides Miami Open, he also made R4 at the Australian Open, QF in Dallas, and won Indian Wells. Ranked no.13, Fritz is currently holding onto his career-best ranking, and if his past performances are any indication, he should do well in Houston as well.

  • Reilly Opelka

Reilly Opelka heads to Houston ranked no.18 in the world, with a 13-6 record (9-6 on hard, 4-0 on indoor hard courts). He was last seen competing in Match 25 when he had to retire against world no.103 Francisco Cerundolo.

Although he had a minor injury just a few weeks back, Opelka has done well this term. He made SF in Sydney, finals in Delray Beach, and won in Dallas, so it’s hard to ignore him and his chances to make a splash at the 2022 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship.

  • John Isner

Lastly, we have John Isner, current world no.22, who was last seen playing on March 25, when he lost against world no.68 Hugo Gaston (6-7, 4-6) in R2 of the Miami Open. With that defeat, Isner is 6-8 on the season with 4-7 on hard and 2-1 on indoor hard courts.

His record isn’t the best, but Isner has achieved reasonable success lately. Besides Miami, he also made R2 in Adelaide and Acapulco, R4 in Indian Well, and semi-finals in Dallas.

So even though his numbers aren’t awe-inspiring, Isner has done enough to deserve our respect and a tag as a live outsider to win the ATP Houston this week.
