A few more top-ranked players were eliminated from contention at the 2023 US Open on Wednesday. Casper Ruud, last year’s runner-up, lost a shocking five-set match against Zhizen Zhang, and Stefanos Tsitsipas lost a five-set match against Dominic Stricker.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, it was a great day for Americans as Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe all advanced to the third round.

In the women’s draw, American Taylor Townsend upset 19th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, while Caroline Wozniacki, playing her first Grand Slam since the 2020 Australian Open, advanced to the third round with a win over 11th seed Petra Kvitova.

John Isner declared prior to the US Open that this would be his last tournament before retirement. The 38-year-old American, who holds the career record for most aces on the ATP Tour, seems particularly motivated to hang on to his career for as long as possible, defeating Facundo Diaz Acosta in straight sets in the first round.

He didn’t face a break point in the entire match and won an impressive 86 percent of his second serve points.

Mmoh had similar success in the first round, taking out 11th seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets. This should be a competitive match in what has been a great start for American men at the US Open, but Isner should have the advantage with his serve.

Another win or two from Isner, and he could become the best story of the US Open.

Gael Monfils vs. Andrey Rublev

US Open Odds: Gael Monfils +155; Andrey Rublev -202

Like Isner, Gael Monfils is nearing the end of his career but isn’t going down without a fight. Despite playing sparingly this season, the 36-year-old French player has impressed as of late, beating Alex de Minaur and Cam Norrie in the Cincinnati Masters and reaching the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open.

Andrey Rublev, the eighth seed, beat Arthur Cazaux in straight sets in the first round but had been struggling coming into the tournament; he won the Swedish Open in July but lost three of his next four matches.

Rublev and Monfils split their two prior meetings, both of which were on outdoor hard courts. There’s certainly strong upset potential here for Monfils.

US Open Odds: Ekaterina Alexandrova -168; Lesia Tsurenko +131

Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 22nd seed, beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, in the first round, but now has to beat a woman to whom she has lost four times and never beaten in the second round.

Lesia Tsurenko, ranked 26 spots lower in the world rankings than Alexandrova, is 4-0 against the Russian. Tsurenko is 8-2 in her last ten matches and an impressive 23-6 on outdoor hard courts this season, although many of those matches have been in ITF events.

Still, at +131 odds, there’s great value in betting Tsurenko to stay undefeated against Alexandrova.

Bouzkova reached the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Masters and Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. She is 8-2 in her last ten matches and should get past Martic, whom she beat previously in March 2022.

Shelton is a slightly better outdoor hard courts player Thiem won his first match on the surface of the season on Monday and will have the home crowd on his side. This could go five sets, but Shelton should have the edge.

Tsitsipas Eliminated

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth-ranked player in the tournament, lost his opening round match against unranked Colombian Daniel Elahi Galán. Prior to the US Open, Galán was playing in an ITF Challenger tournament, but looked more like a top-ranked player against Tsitsipas.

Galán shockingly won the first set 6-0 and continued to dominate in the second, winning 6-1. Tsitsipas charged back with a 6-3 set victory before losing 7-5 in the fourth set. He fought off eight match points before ultimately bowing out of the tournament.

Must-Bet Second Round Matches

One of the most exciting second round matches is an all-American clash between Tommy Paul (+100) and Sebastian Korda (-125). Despite being ranked higher (No. 34 to 52), Paul is actually winless (0-3) against Korda.

Cristian Garin (+500) takes on Alex De Minaur (-800) in another match that could be closer than the betting odds suggest. Garin defeated Jiri Lehecka in four sets in the first round, while De Minaur scored an easy three-set victory over Filip Krajinovic. Simona Halep was even more of a betting favorite in the women’s draw than Tsitsipas in the men’s draw. The world No. 7 had been one of the hottest players on tour prior to the US Open, but lost to Daria Snigur in one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

Snigur, a native of the Ukraine, won the match 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. It was not only her first career Grand Slam victory but her first victory on the WTA Tour. She had primarily played ITF tournaments this year and was just 0-2 on the WTA Tour. The US Open was the first Grand Slam she had even qualified for this season.

Must-Bet Second Round Matches

2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu improved to 11-1 in her career at the fourth Grand Slam with her first round win over Harmony Tan. Andreescu (-110) now faves Beatriz Haddad Maia (-110) in what should be another close battle. Haddad Maia didn’t lose a game in her first round match and should have the edge in this one.

Obviously, all eyes will be on the second round match between Serena Williams (+162) vs. Anna Kontaveit (-200). Taking into consideration Williams’ play this season, Kontaveit seems like the appropriate play here, but it’s hard to go against the 23-time Grand Slam winner at the US Open.

Zverev Out

Alex Zverev, the Olympic gold medalist and one of tennis’ rising stars, won’t be participating in the US Open due to an ankle injury. One of the betting favorites as of last week, Zverev hasn’t played since suffering the injury during a semi-final match against Rafael Nadal in the French Open.

Zverev, who had played in 27 consecutive Grand Slams before being forced to miss Wimbledon, was a semi-finalist at last year’s US Open and reached the final the year prior against Dominic Thiem. He’ll be replaced in this year’s draw by American Stefan Kozlov.

Coric Rising

Borna Coric just moved up to a career-best No. 29 in the world, but you can be forgiven if you aren’t too familiar with the 25-year-old Croatian. Before winning the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last week, Coric was ranked No. 152.

However, not only did he win his first tournament of the year, but he did so in remarkable fashion. Coric took down Rafael Nadal in the Round of 32 and then defeated Roberto Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. As a result, his odds of winning the US Open have lowered all the way to +2500, which puts him in 12th.

Women’s Outright Odds

Raducanu and Garcia Rising

Caroline Garcia, like Coric on the men’s side, also had her odds of winning the US Open lowered considerably after winning the Western & Southern Open. While her path to victory wasn’t as impressive, she did defeat more established players like Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, and Petra Kvitova.

Garcia won the French Open doubles earlier this year but hasn’t had much singles success in a Grand Slam. She’s 10-9 at the US Open in her career and hasn’t advanced beyond the third Round. Her best-ever Grand Slam result is a quarter-final finish at the French Open in 2017, so don’t get too excited.

Emma Raducanu, meanwhile, has also been a popular betting option as of late. The defending US Open champion is starting to turn her play around and resemble the player who dominated last year in New York. She defeated Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka last week before losing to Jessica Pegula.

Coco Injured?

Coco Gauff has the sixth-shortest odds to win the US Open but is fading due to potential injury concerns. Gauff was forced to withdraw from last week’s Western & Southern Open during a match against Marie Bouzkova and left the court in tears.

“I promise I am ok! The world is not ending, lol! I have been told it is most likely a really minor sprain, so everything should be healed soon,” Gauff wrote in a message on social media. However, there’s been no confirmation as to her status for the US Open.

ATP & WTA Updated Odds To Win the 2021 U.S. Open

Djokovic, Medvedev, and Zverev Still on Top

A couple of days back, we had Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev as the main three favorites to win the 2021 U.S. Open. To no one’s surprise, nothing has changed in the outright betting markets, as the trio remain priced as the top favorites to go all the way.

Still, there have been some odds movements. Djokovic, who was priced as low as -160 on Monday, is now at -150, and while his odds have risen, the difference is negligible. Similarly, the betting odds on Zverev have increased from +500 to +550.

Meanwhile, the betting odds on Medvedev have dropped from +350 to +300.

The slight odd movements don’t surprise us one bit and really don’t mean much. It mostly has to do with how dominant the three players have been over the opening rounds of play, but as we know, some of the best players need some time to get going, which is why you can fully expect Djokovic’s odds to start dropping – unless we’re in for a shock win that would see the Serb eliminated from the tournament.

In regards to the favorites’ results, neither has disappointed. That said, we have to show some respect for Medvedev’s showings, considering how dominant he has been so far.

Medvedev has won both of his opening rounds in straight sets – against Richard Gasquet (6-4, 6-3, 6-1) and Dominik Koepfer (6-4, 6-1, 6-2).

Djokovic was slightly less convincing with his round one showing when he dropped one set against Denmark’s Holger Rune, who he ended up beating with 6-1, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1. Although a convincing win, the Serb has dropped a set against a much weaker opponent.

Ashleigh Barty (Still) Favoured to Win

As with the men’s side of the competition, the women’s side hasn’t seen much movement in the outright betting odds for the 2021 U.S. Open. Ashleigh Barty, who was priced as +300 favorite on Monday, is now priced at only +275 despite her close match in R1 against Vera Zvonareva.

Barty defeated the Russian tennis star in straight sets but needed a tiebreaker in the second set, which the Aussie won with 9-7, to seal the deal at 6-1, 7-6. Still, there is no shame in playing a close match against an experienced player who has already made it to the quarter-finals (2011) and the finals (2010) here.

Naomi Osaka, who was priced as the favorite to win the U.S. Open weeks before the tournament began, is now at +450, which is a slight increase from Monday when she was at +400. There isn’t much to explain the odds movement since Osaka played well against Marie Bouzkova (6-4, 6-1) in R1 and has secured a walkover win against Olga Danilovic, who withdrew from the tournament due to illness.

Last but not least, we have Aryna Sabalenka as the third favorite to win the 2021 U.S. Open. The 23-year-old Belarus tennis player was priced at +900 on Monday and is now at +1000. In her tournament opener, Sabalenka looked a bit off and has struggled against Nina Stojanovic. Sabalenka looked set to win in straight sets after winning the first with 6-4; however, she lost the tiebreaker in the second set with 4-7.

Regardless, Sabalenka closed out the deal with 6-0 and made it into the second round, where the Belarusian swept (2-0) the 2021 French open semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek. Her next opponent is world no.29 Danielle Collins, who she will meet on Friday, September 3, for a spot in the fourth round where she is likely to meet with world no.21 Ons Jabeur.

Naomi Osaka Off To A Strong Start

Current world no.3, Naomi Osaka had a solid start to the defense of her US Open title by winning her opening round match against Marie Buzkova with 6-4, 6-1. Although Osaka won the match in straight sets, the Czech tennis player was closer to causing an upset than the final score would suggest.

Osaka and Buzkova looked even through the first set, which was filled with tight hames, hard-hitting rallies, and long points. It wasn’t until the 10th game when Osaka pushed Buzkova to make a backhand error on her third point set to take the lead and the opening set.

It was smooth sailing for the Japanese tennis star from there forward, securing a 5-0 lead in the second set, before Buzkova finally got a chance to respond, winning a game for herself. However, it was too late, too little for Buzkova, who had to admit defeat to the defending champion with 1-6.

Osaka’s next opponent is world no.145 Olga Danilovic, who she will meet on Tuesday, September 1. Danilovic made it into the second round of play with a convincing 2-0 victory against Alycia Parks.

Osaka will present the Serbian tennis player with one of the toughest challenges of the season. Although she has beaten high-profile names before, namely Bianca Andreescu at the 2018 US Open, Patty Schnyder at the 2018 Pula, and Julia Görges at the 2018 Moscow, Danilovic has not recorded a single record win against a top-10 rated player in the last three years.

Still, Danilovic has shown excellent form, having fought her way through the qualifiers, and seems ready to make some noise on Tuesday. A win would mark her first R2 appearance at the US Open and her second R2 at a Grand Slam after she already achieved that feat at the 2021 Australian Open.

Murray and Tsitsipas Produce a Five-Set Thriller

Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas did not hesitate to produce a spectacle on the first day of action at the 2021 US Open. The two tennis stars met in the first round of action, and while the current world no.3 entered the match as a heavy favorite, Murray made Tsitsipas work much harder for the win as initially expected.

Murray started the match well, won the first set (6-2), and even led in the second set-tie breaker before he lost his shot at going 2-0 up with a 7-9 defeat in the tiebreak. Regardless, the former no.1 and 2012 US Open champion was not ready to give up yet.

He won the third set with 6-3 and set himself up for success. However, the fatigue started to set in, which gave the 11-year-younger Tsitsipas a chance to mount a comeback. The 23-year-old secured the last two sets of the match with 6-3 and 6-4 to edge out a win after spending four hours and 44 minutes on the court.

Tsitsipas will now face off against world no.33 Adrian Mannarino on Tuesday, September 1. The 33-year-old French tennis player made it to the second round of the 2021 US Open with a 3-2 victory against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and will now look to emulate his success from September 2019, when he won against Tsitsipas after the latter had to retire.

ATP & WTA Updated Odds To Win the 2021 U.S. Open

Novak Djokovic And “The Rest”

Novak Djokovic will enter the 2021 U.S. Open as the main betting favorite, priced at -160. His betting odds haven’t changed much in the week leading into the tournament and have, in fact, dropped since the market first opened.

That isn’t too shocking since it’s hard to justify betting against Djokovic to win his 21st Grand Slam. Based on what he has shown over the season, there really isn’t any tennis player who can consistently beat him and threaten to claim the title for himself. Having said that, Djokovic has lost before, and with some luck, there is a good chance we might see one of the underdogs step up and win the 2021 U.S. Open for himself.

The first underdog in line to take over if Djokovic falls is Daniil Medvedev, priced at +350. Just last week, the Russian tennis star was priced at +400 and has seemingly caught the attention of bettors.

While Medvedev wasn’t as successful as Djokovic on the season, he has done well before, reaching finals in Australia, quarter-finals in France, and has made it to the fourth round in Wimbledon. Most recently, Medvedev also made it to the semi-finals in Cincinnati, has won the Canadian Open, as well as Mallorca Open.

Alexander Zverev is priced as the third-favorite to win the 2021 U.S. Open at +500. Like Medvedev, Zverev’s odds have dropped since last week, when he was at +550 on the outright betting markets.

Obviously, seeing Zverev win the 2021 U.S. Open would be a shock; however, it’s not like he hasn’t done well this season. He succeeded in Cincinnati just over a week ago and has reached the semi-finals in France.

What’s more, Zverev has reached the quarter-finals in Australia and was the finalist here in 2020. Obviously, he has the tools to be competitive; now, it will all come down to execution.

Ashleigh Barty or Naomi Osaka?

If the WTA betting odds are to be trusted, the battle for the 2021 U.S. Open title will come down to Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka. Just a few weeks back, Osaka was billed as the main betting favorite at +300, but her odds have since drifted to +400.

On the other side, Ashleigh Barty was priced as the second-favorite but will now enter the fourth and final Grand Slam as the player to beat at +300. The offered betting odds on the main two favorites haven’t changed much over the last week, nor were there any major shakeups in the middle of the field.

Aryna Sabalenka remains priced at +900 as the third favorite. We would likely see Sabalenka’s odds a bit shorter had she done better in Cincinnati a couple of weeks back; however, she failed to deliver and ended her journey in the Round of 32.

However, she has made it to the semi-finals in Canada and in Wimbledon, indicating that she has what it takes to compete for the title. Will she be able to overcome hard-court specialists in Osaka and Barty, however, remains to be seen.
