US Open Qualifying

There are 128 players in both the men’s and women’s singles draw, and 16 of those spots are dedicated to qualifiers.

Qualifying began on August 22 and included a few notable names, such as Taro Daniel, Jaume Munar, Borna Gojo, Vasek Pospisil, and Cristian Garin.

Some of the more notable names in women’s qualifying include Harriet Dart, Eugenie Bouchard, Jule Niemeier, and Greet Minnen.

Notable Absences

Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal are the two biggest absences in the men’s draw in New York this year. Kyrgios has only played one match in 2023 after recovering from knee surgery. He has since been dealing with a wrist injury.

Kyrgios doesn’t intend to play for the rest of the season, recently telling fans, "I still have some fire left in the tank, my body just needs time." Nadal hasn’t played since the Australian Open and is likely to retire after next season, assuming he returns at all.

Other players missing the US Open due to injury are Pablo Carreño Busta, Denis Shapovalov, Reilly Opelka, and Marin Cilic. Emma Raducanu, the 2021 women’s US Open champion, is the only notable absence in the women’s draw.

Raducanu is recovering from wrist surgery but would have needed a wildcard spot due to her poor performance this season.

Top Seeds and Wildcards

Carlos Alcaraz, despite losing to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Cincinnati Masters last week, maintains the top seed for the US Open, while Djokovic will be ranked No. 2.

The other top 10 seeds in the men’s draw are Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe.

Swiatek, the defending women’s champion, is the top seed in the women’s draw. The other top 10 seeds are Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Maria Sakkari, Marketa Vondrousova, and Petra Kvitova.

Notable wildcards and protected ranking entries include Gael Monfils, Kei Nishikori, and Milos Raonic, the latter two of whom have returned to the sport after extended absences. Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki also received wildcard entries.
