We’re a little more than one week out from the most anticipated golf event of the year: The Masters. This year’s Masters will be must-watch TV and could be the most contentious tournament in recent memory, with PGA Tour and LIV Golf players competing in the same event for the first time since the launch of the Saudi-backed rival golf league.

However, let’s not forget about the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio this weekend. It might not have the same quality of field as the designated events on the PGA Tour schedule, but there’s plenty of quality players in the tournament, including Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, and Corey Conners.

Tyrrell Hatton is one of many players in the field to have won on the PGA Tour. The 31-year-old English golfer, who was runner-up at THE PLAYERS in early March, won the Arnold Palmer Invitation in 2020. He has 28 top-10 finishes in 112 PGA Tour events.

Interestingly, despite being the favorite, Hatton has never played at TPC San Antonio, at least not in an official PGA Tour event. He’s one of the most notable names in the field, but he may not be the best-value bet this weekend.

If you’re looking for a big payday on a player with a decent chance of performing well this weekend, there’s no better option than Thomas Detry. The Belgian golfer, like Hatton, hasn’t played at TPC San Antonio, but is having a career-best season.

Detry was a runner-up at the Bermuda Championship earlier this year and is coming off of a T8 finish at the Corales Puntacana Championship. He ranks among the top 100 in each of the four major strokes-gained categories and needs a strong performance at the Valero to secure an invite to the Masters Tournament.

Longshot Pick – Charley Hoffman +11000

This is a real longshot considering his odds, but there’s a lot to like about Charley Hoffman’s chances this weekend. The 46-year-old American hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2016, when he won the Valero Texas Open. He also finished runner-up at Valero in 2019 and 2021. 

In fact, through 46 career rounds at TPC San Antonio, Hoffman leads all players in this year’s tournament with +2.02 true strokes gained. Hoffman also leads all players in Data Golf’s performance per course metric, meaning he elevates his game at TPC San Antonio more than any other player in this year’s field. He has made just four of 14 cuts this season, but returning to a course where he has had success could get his game back in top form. 

A successful $10 bet on Hoffman pays out $1,100.

We are officially less than one week away from The Masters as we head into the Valero Texas Open. Scottie Scheffler continues to stay hot with his third win this season already, and on top of that, he has gained control of the #1 World Golf Ranking. We stay in the lovely state of Texas this week as we head from Austin to San Antonio. 

What is typically the last spot into The Masters, there have been many memorable moments at TPC San Antonio. In 2019, Corey Conners Monday qualified for the tournament and walked out victorious on Sunday. Will we see another crazy story come out of the Valero Texas Open this week?

Betting Favorite: Rory McIlroy +750

Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite heading into the week with +750 odds. This would be a great time for McIlroy to start playing well as he heads to Augusta next week. McIlroy needs the green jacket to complete the career grand slam, and as the years go by, he does not get any older. 

If it is any consolation to McIlroy, Tiger Woods won The Masters in his 40s, as did Jack Nicklaus. It can be done, but it is never an easy task to accomplish. 

McIlroy comes in at #9 in the World Golf Rankings this week. He has played in five events this season with two top-10 finishes. McIlroy’s last appearance came at The Players Championship, where he finished tied for thirty-third. 

Jordan Spieth +1400

Former Masters Champion Jordan Spieth is in the field this week. Spieth fell two spots in the most recent rankings, from 15 to 17. The Texas native and the defending champion at The Valero Texas Open, Spieth, is also looking to get his game back on track this week. 

It has been a bumpy ride for Spieth since his breakout season in 2015. He has struggled with his tempo and swing, which he continues to make an effort to get back to where he once was. Spieth was so close to winning a second green jacket before his back-nine collapse in 2016. 

In the last five seasons, Spieth only has one win, and that came at this tournament last season. Can Spieth find his old self this week and repeat as the champion in San Antonio?

Hideki Matsuyama +1400

Hideki Matsuyama will be a busy man this week as he attempts to play golf and also prepare for next week and his title defense at Augusta National. Not only does he have to worry about playing golf for the next two weeks, but Matsuyama also is trying to prepare for all the pre-tournament festivities. 

From the Champions Dinner to the Par-3 Contest and then preparing for the tournament, the Valero Texas Open may be the least of his worries this week. In this tournament last year, Matsuyama finished tied for the thirtieth. 

Corey Conners +1800

Not very often do we see stories like Corey Conners from 2019. It took a Monday qualifier win to get into the field in 2019 for Conners. By the facial expression of his wife at the end of the week, it was shocking to see him as the champion. That’s right; Conners won the tournament after having to qualify to get in. 

Conners is coming off a great week at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play event, where he finished third after beating Dustin Johnson in the third and fourth place match. Conners’ one and only career win came from TPC San Antonio in 2019. Could we see the magic happen again this week?

The big tournaments in the PGA are right around the corner, with The Masters set to tee off next weekend. While some players will choose to relax prior to that one, many more will be in San Antonio, Texas this weekend for the 2019 Valero Texas Open. Rickie Fowler

2019 Valero Texas Open Betting Odds: +1000

Fowler had his best year on the tour back in 2015 when he won 2 tournaments. We are still in the very early stages of the 2019 season, but it already looks as though he might be ready to have a career year. He already has a win at the Waste Management Open and has also had a pair of top 5 finishes to go along with that victory.

Since finishing tied for second at the Honda Classic, Fowler has had a couple of poorer showings, making the cut in both tournaments since then, but not really getting anywhere near the top of the leaderboard. Not sure he bounces back here.

Tony Finau

2019 Valero Texas Open Betting Odds: +1600

Finau comes into the Valero Texas Open looking for his first tour win since way back in 2016. He has not done much yet this season to suggest that he is about to forge his way to the top of the leaderboard this weekend. His best finish this season came at the HSBC Champions tournament, where he finished second.

That is the only time that he has landed in the top 10, and while this is not the strongest field imaginable, there are other golfers that you would like to finish ahead of Finau. Top 10 is probably the most realistic outcome for him here.

Jordan Spieth

2019 Valero Texas Open Betting Odds: +1800

Spieth exploded onto the PGA Tour at a very early age, but the last couple of seasons have seen him drop back down to earth a little. The one advantage that he has over the other golfers that are among the favorites this weekend is that he has a history with this tournament.

Back in 2015, Spieth ended up finishing second behind Jimmy Walker, 4 strokes off the winning score. He has yet to land in the top 10 this season, but I have a feeling that he might win here. This is a course that he likes, and that may be enough to get him in at a very good price.

Matt Kuchar

2019 Valero Texas Open Betting Odds: +1800

At the age of 40, many golfers start to see a bit of a decline in their game, but Matt Kuchar appears to be heading in the opposite direction. He is sitting atop the FedEx Cup standings in the early going and already has a pair of wins under his belt this season, tying a career best for wins in a season with still plenty of time left to break that mark.

He is coming into this one off a solid performance at the Dell Technologies Match Play event, where he finished in second. Kuchar is definitely one to watch this weekend.
