Series History
The Vikings are 10-6 all-time against the Panthers and 3-3 when visiting Carolina. They last played in Week 6 of the 2021 season in Charlotte and the Vikings won 34-28 in OT.
Why Bet on Minnesota?
The Vikings won an NFL-record 11 one-score games last season but are 0-3 in them this year after last Sunday’s 28-24 home loss to the Chargers. LA linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. made the game-sealing interception in the end zone with 7 seconds left, snagging a ball that deflected off the chest of diving tight end T.J. Hockenson via throw from Kirk Cousins. On Minnesota’s previous possession, Michael Davis knocked down Cousins’ fourth-down throw to Justin Jefferson at the goal line.
Cousins completed 32 of 50 passes for 367 yards, three touchdowns and that one interception. Cousins reached 50 pass attempts in a game for the sixth time in his career, with Sunday’s game marking his second-lowest yardage total in those contests. He had long touchdown strikes of 52 and 36 yards and also four additional completions of greater than 20 yards. Though the Vikings are 0-3, Cousins has multiple passing scores and has topped 340 yards in all three games to this point.
Star WR Justin Jefferson recorded seven receptions on 13 targets for 149 yards and one touchdown. Jefferson has posted nearly identical lines in all three games this season, gaining between 149 and 159 yards in each contest. His production Sunday was powered by four catches of more than 20 yards, the highlight of which came on a 52-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Top running back Alexander Mattison rushed 20 times for 93 yards and had five receptions for 32 additional yards. However, Mattison might start losing touches because recent trade acquisition Cam Akers is expected to debut in Week 4. The Vikings acquired Akers last Wednesday and made him a healthy inactive for Sunday’s loss. Coach Kevin O’Connell said that he still views Mattison as the team’s lead back.
Minnesota’s three defeats have been by a total of 13 points — despite the performance of their defense. . The Vikings’ past two opponents have romped to historic days against their defense — giving up 259 rushing yards to the Philadelphia Eagles and 445 passing yards to the Chargers. There had been only four previous occasions since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger when a team allowed so many rushing and passing yards in consecutive games of a regular season. Several Vikings defenders are banged up and in question for this Sunday as well.
The Vikings were NFC North champs last year but can forget about the playoffs if they fall to 0-4 because just one team in league history has reached the postseason after that start.
“It is very easy to be in a situation where we’re 0-3, and there is going to be a lot of noise about what that means long term,” O’Connell said, “but we’ve got to find a way to worry about the little things first, and collectively build on those positive little things until it equals the result we need it to equal on Sunday.”

Why Bet on Carolina?
This offseason, the Vikings cut former Pro Bowl receiver Adam Thielen, and he signed a three-year, $25 million deal with Carolina. Thielen’s first 6,682 receiving yards (fourth in franchise history) and 55 touchdowns (third) came in Minnesota, where the Detroit Lakes native went to Minnesota State Mankato on a $500 scholarship and signed with the Vikings as a 2013 undrafted tryout.
He has become Carolina’s top wideout with 20 catches for 211 yards and two scores and is a team captain and leader for a young Carolina locker room.
“It’s already honestly a little weird watching tape,” said Thielen this week of facing Minnesota. “It’s just crazy to be game planning against guys that were my teammates for a long time.” He was asked whether any part of him wants to show up the Vikings after getting cut. “Is there a little bit?” he said. “Yeah, maybe, but I’m not the type of person to hold grudges.”
While Thielen had veteran Andy Dalton throwing him the ball last week with rookie No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young out, but Young will return Sunday after missing just the one game. Young completed 42 of 71 pass attempts for 299 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He had only one completion of 20-plus yards against Atlanta and New Orleans. Dalton had four against Seattle.
Coach Frank Reich said he would be comfortable playing Young even if he wasn’t 100%.
“Credit Bryce for being ready early,” Reich said. “We were thinking one to two weeks, and it could be more than two. He’s done everything he could to get back here.”
What hasn’t helped Young or Dalton is a bad running game as the Panthers rank 15th through three games in rushing. The Panthers have carried the ball 65 times for 298 yards and a touchdown. Quarterbacks have accounted for seven carries and 62 yards in that total.
Carolina has yet to find much consistency across its offensive line. The group was considered a strength entering the season but has struggled with Reich’s drop-back passing offense. The Panthers have started three different right guards. The defense is very banged up as well. Carolina lost three more starters to injuries in the first half of last week’s loss in Seattle defensive captain Shaq Thompson broke his fibula in Week 2 and is out for the season.
Two secondary starters will be out at a minimum Sunday in safety Xavier Woods and cornerback Jaycee Horn. Carolina also could be without cornerback CJ Henderson, Horn’s replacement.
