Most Notable ATP Wimbledon First-Round Match

Matteo Berrettini vs. Lorenzo Sonego
Odds have yet to be released for the first round, but the clash between Italians Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego should be a tough one for oddsmakers. Berrettini, in the last few years, has been one of the best grass court players on the ATP Tour, but he has struggled mightily this season with inconsistent play and injuries; he pulled out of the Queen’s Club Championships two weeks ago and likely won’t be 100 percent at Wimbledon.

Sonego is more than capable of upsetting Berrettini. He’s 17-16 this season and is coming off of a straight sets victory, 6-1, 6-2, over Berrettini on grass at Stuttgart. Berrettini beat Sonego at Stuttgart in 2022.

Alcaraz, the top seed, takes on Jeremy Chardy in the first round and could play Alex de Minaur or Alexander Zverev by the third round. A potential blockbuster quarter-final clash involving Alcaraz and Holger Rune could also be on the horizon. 

Djokovic, the top seed in the other half of the bracket, could meet Nick Kyrgios, Felix Auger-Aliassime, or Andry Rublev in the quarter-finals. Djokovic has won Wimbledon four years in a row.

Most Notable WTA Wimbledon First-Round Match

Venus Williams vs. Elina Svitolina
Seven-time major champion Venus Williams earned entry into Wimbledon as a wild card, as did Elina Svitolina, who returned from maternity leave in April and reached the quarter-finals at the French Open. Svitolina could be a strong underdog pick at Wimbledon. The 28-year-old Ukranian is 3-1 against Williams in her career.

Other Women’s Draw Notes
Iga Swiatek, the French Open champion and betting favorite to win Wimbledon, begins her tournament against Zhu Lin and is the top seed. Aryna Sabalenka, who has the second-shortest odds, could face Karolina Muchova in the Round of 16 in what would be a rematch of the Roland Garros semifinals. With the French Open in the rearview mirror, the tennis world turns its attention to the grass court season, culminating in the Wimbledon Championships. This year’s two-week event at the All-England Lawn & Tennis Club will be controversial from the start. The powers that be have banned all competitors from Russia and Belarus due to the Ukraine conflict which means top players Daniil Medvedev. Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Victoria Azarenka, Aryna Sabalenka and others will not be participating. 

In addition, tennis legends Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Roger Federer have not committed to playing as they all return from lengthy injury layoffs. Alexander Zverev was injured in the French Open final and likely won’t be ready for Wimbledon either and the status of Naomi Osaka has been a week-to-week basis for the last two years. With all that in mind, it’s time to have at the early Wimbledon Betting Odds.

Djokovic Big Favorite

Even if the men’s players mentioned above were in the draw, six-time champion Novak Djokovic would be the favorite. The Serbian has made the Wimbledon final in seven of his last 10 appearances and he’s won three straight titles on the famous centre court. A loss to rival Rafael Nadal ended Djokovic’s run at the French Open in the quarterfinals but he is -110 at MyBookie to win his 21st Grand Slam title on July 10. 

Nadal has the third best odds at +600 but he hasn’t made a Wimbledon final since 2011 and only reached the semifinals twice in that span. The Spaniard has had a great 2022 season with titles in the Australian Open and French Open but grass has not historically been one of his better surfaces. 

Carlos Alcaraz has also had a great 2022 season with big wins on the hard courts and the clay. The 19-year-old is +560 to win at Wimbledon, which would be his first Grand Slam title. Alcaraz has never made a final on grass and lost in the second round at Wimbledon last year. 

Last year’s finalist, Italian Marco Berrettini is +1000 to win this year. He made the semifinals at the Australian Open this season before missing the French with hand surgery. 

The other semifinalists last year were Denis Shapavolov (+1800) and Hubert Hurkacz (+2200) while Felipe Auger-Aliassime (+1225) made the quarterfinals. Marin Cilic, who made the semis at the French, is +2200 and he has four quarterfinal runs at Wimbledon, including a loss in the 2017 final.

A couple highly-ranked players with good odds have struggled on grass. Stefanos Tsitsipas is +1100 but he’s lost in the first round in three of his four trips to Wimbledon

Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon champ, is listed at +2300 but it is not yet sure if he will be in the draw. The 20-time Grand Slam winner hasn’t played since last year’s quarterfinal loss to Hurkacz at Wimbledon.

Women’s Tournament Wide Open

If Serena Williams isn’t in London, the women’s bracket is completely wide open. Even if the 23-time Grand Slam champion is able to play, no one knows how effective she will be. Williams, who has seven titles on center court, hasn’t played since retiring in the first round at last year’s Wimbledon. 

Iga Swiatek is the betting favorite after winning a second French Open title earlier this month. The title win over Coco Gauff was her 35th straight win and Swiatek is +180 to win at Wimbledon. However she’s never made a final on a grass court and in two appearances at Wimbledon she has losses in the fourth and first rounds.

Osaka, who also doesn’t have a grass court title, is +700. She withdrew from Wimbledon last year, lost early in Paris and hasn’t been past the third round at Wimbledon.

The field will have past champions. Simona Halep won the 2019 title over Serena but hasn’t returned to Wimbledon since. She is +1250 and 2018 champ Angelique Kerber is +2700. Kerber reached the semifinals last year and was a runner up in 2016 

Last year’s champion, Ash Barty, has retired from tennis and the 2021 runner up, Karolina Pliskova is +1700. Pliskova went out early at the French but has historically been better on grass and hard courts. 

An intriguing wager could be placed on Gauff. The American teenager stormed through the French Open bracket until she ran into Swiatek in the final. She has reached the fourth round in both of her appearances at WImbledon and is +1400 to win this year. 

Former quarterfinalists at Wimbledon, Ona Jabuer (+1950) and Madison Keys (+3500) also offer value. Great Britain will put their hopes on Emma Raducanu, a former US Open champion. Raducanu is just outside the top 10 rankings and her odds are +1050 but she also had to retire from her first round match on Tuesday in her Wimbledon tune-up.

Betting Analysis and Prediction

With four tournaments on grass between now and Wimbledon’s start, the odds will change throughout June. Also when the draws are released those odds will update based on the top contender’s paths to the finals. 

Early predictions are to lock in Djokovic’s odds now with possible flyers on Berrettini and Auger-Aliassime on the men’s side. On the women’s side, Gauff’s odds are very nice a month out, as are the odds on Kerber, who has always played well at Wimbledon.

Who to Fade | ATP Tour

Carlos Alcaraz is the world No. 1 and coming off of an impressive grass court championship at the Queen’s Club Championships in London, but it’s tough to bet on him in a grass court Grand Slam at Wimbledon, where Djokovic has won four consecutive titles. Alcaraz lost to Djokovic in four sets in the French Open semifinals and looked fatigued as the match went on, dropping the last two sets by a score of 6-1, 6-1. 

Jannik Sinner is another talented young player destined for Grand Slam success, but it likely won’t come at Wimbledon this year. Sinner, who beat Alcaraz in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon last year, retired from his quarter-final match at ATP Halle last week with an injured adductor muscle. Even if he’s able to play next week, he likely isn’t winning his first Grand Slam.

Possible Longshot | ATP Tour

Alexander Zverev, at +2400, is an attractive betting option at Wimbledon. While it’s hard to imagine anyone but Djokovic winning the tournament, Zverev has been slowly building momentum this season and had a great showing at Roland Garros. He’s 10-3 in his last 13 matches and has a career 64.7 winning percentage on grass.

Who to Fade | WTA Tour

The women’s draw is a lot more wide open than the men’s, but bettors should avoid outright wagers on Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Muchova. Sabalenka, although 35-7 this season and a three-time winner on the WTA Tour, suffered a disappointing loss to Karolina Muchova in the semifinal at Roland Garros and followed that up with an elimination in the Round of 16 at the Bet 10 Open last week in Germany. Muchova, meanwhile, had a nice run at Roland Garros that led her to the final, but don’t expect her to replicate that at Wimbledon.

Possible Longshot | WTA Tour

Beatriz Haddad Maia is a decent longshot bet at Wimbledon. The 27-year-old Brazilian player is 29-16 in 45 career WTA grass court matches and was 13-2 on the surface last year, winning the Rothesay Open in Nottingham. She made the semifinals at Roland Garros and could be in for another decent run at a Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

The 135th edition of the oldest tennis tournament in the world should be interesting on both the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ draws with many different storylines that will impact results. There’s heavy Wimbledon Betting favorites in both draws, while some of the best players in the world will miss the tournament.

Serena Williams Returns

Serena Williams hasn’t played a singles match on the WTA Tour since last year’s Wimbledon, where she withdrew from her first-round match. She is, however, playing in the Eastbourne International’s doubles draw alongside Ons Jabeur. 

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, is 40 years old and has been away for far too long to expect to contend for a Grand Slam championship. It would be a great story if she were to win a few matches and possibly reach the quarter- or semi-finals, but there’s so many good players to contend with.

Iga Swiatek, for instance, is the overwhelming favorite to win the Ladies’ Draw at this year’s Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Polish star and world No. 1 has already won six singles titles this season and has a record-tying 35-match win streak. This is her tournament to lose.

No Russians or Belarussians

Following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, Wimbledon announced it wouldn’t allow Russian or Belarussian players to participate in this year’s tournament. It hasn’t walked back on that stance, despite the US Open announcing it would welcome players from those countries. ATP and WTA Tour events leading up to Wimbledon also accepted Russian and Belarussian players.

The Ladies’ draw won’t be impacted too much as the top five players in the world should participate barring injury. Aryna Sabalenka, world No. 6, and Daria Kasatkina, world No. 12, will be the notable absences.

The biggest absence, however, will be ATP world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The 2021 US Open winner would have been a favorite to win the Gentlemen’s draw.

Interestingly, doubles specialist Natela Dzalamidze changed her nationality from Russian to Georgian and will be able to compete alongside Serbian partner Aleksandra Krunić.

Djokovic Chasing Nadal

Novak Djokovic, the betting favorite for the Gentlemen’s draw, is now two Grand Slam titles behind Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open and Australian Open this year. Djokovic is dominant at Wimbledon, having won three of the last championships, and should be especially motivated to move one Grand Slam back of Nadal.

Nadal, meanwhile, is looking to become only the sixth player, male or female, to win the calendar Grand Slam. He hasn’t won Wimbledon since 2010, however.

The other member of the Big 3, Roger Federer, is still recovering from surgery and is expected to miss Wimbledon.

2021 Wimbledon Betting Odds Remain Unchanged

There wasn’t any movement in the 2021 Wimbledon outright betting odds ahead of the first round of play. That isn’t too surprising given that there weren’t any big news surrounding any of the main favorites to hoist the trophy in England.

One day before the kick-off, Novak Djoković remains as the main favorite to win, priced at -115. Although the odds seem a bit low, they make a lot of sense, following Rafael Nadal’s decision to withdraw from the tournament.

As it stands now, Stefanos Tsitsipas (+550) is Djoković’s biggest threat for the title, followed by Daniil Medvedev (+600), who is priced as the third-favorite to win 2021 Wimbledon. Although both are strong players, who are capable of derailing the current world no.1, it’s unclear whether either of the two will manage to stop the Serb en route to his sixth Wimbledon title.

On the women’s side, Ashleigh Barty (+500) remains as the top-favorite to win her first Wimbledon after two quarter-finals appearances in 2014 and 2017 and a grand finals run in her debut in 2013. Barty emerged as the main female favorite following Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal from the tournament last week.

Following the Australian tennis star are Serena Williams (+650) and Petra Kvitova (+900) as second and third-favorite to hoist the trophy. Williams’ success on the English grass-courts (seven titles) alone is enough to make her one of the top favorites, while Kvitova earned her spot as one of the favorites thanks to her strong showings throughout the year.

Do Underdogs Stand a Chance?

The 2021 Wimbledon will feature a very stacked field; however, it wouldn’t be the first time an underdog would stun the world and claim the prestigious title for himself. On the men’s side of the field, Djoković’s dominance across all surfaces makes it very tough to pick out an outsider to upset him; however, there is one name that stands out.

Matteo Berrettini travels to Wimbledon as sixth-favourite (+1400), but he shouldn’t be overlooked as someone who can give Djoković and Federer a run for their money. The 25-year-old Italian has had an excellent season and is always a dangerous player to face, largely thanks to his aggressive playstyle and proficiency on all courts.

He is strong at the net, and his ability to punish mistakes is what could earn him a deep run in England. He has already proven his worth at the Queen’s Club Championship, which he won with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory against Briton Cameron Norrie, and seems ready as ever to challenge for his first Grand Slam title.

He might not be the perfect player, and some might be worried about Berrettini’s lack of consistency, but when he’s on, the Italian is tough to defeat. A lot will have to go in Berrettini’s favor to win in Wimbledon, but if there is one outsider that can impress, he is the one.

Wimbledon is almost here! Roland Garros came and went, with some surprise on the women’s end, and Novak Djokovic claims another title on the Men’s side. This year’s tournament will feature a chance for Djokovic to win his 20th major to tie both Nadal and Federer with that number.

All-Time Women’s Champs

Five different women have won Wimbledon at least seven times, with three of them coming in the open era and the other two happening in the amateur era. The leader of the pack with nine is Martina Navratilova, who won her first one in 1978, and her last in 1990.

Coming in at eight and with the second most is Helen Wills Moody, who took eight. Finishing off the list with seven is a three-way tie between Serena Williams, Dorothea Lambert Chambers, and the great Steffi Graf. All three players had great careers, while Williams seeks to win it one more time.

Other than Petra Kvitova (2011, 2014), no active players besides the Williams sisters have won it multiple times.

All-Time Men’s Champs

Only one man has won more than seven Wimbledon titles. And when the name drops in the next sentence, it should come as absolutely no surprise. Eight times, Roger Federer has been crowned the champ and been doused with strawberries and crème. This has been his place like Roland Garros has been for Rafa.

He has won only twice in the past 11 appearances here, but being the all-time king is still quite the feat. There is a two-way tie between William Renshaw and Pete Sampras for seven Wimbledon titles, but they are still one below the Suisse legend.

Fed will have his work cut out for him in 2021, but anything is truly possible.

Women’s Winner

There will be some great competition on the women’s side of the bracket this year. And with Naomi Osaka withdrawing, the field will open up a bit more. Making predictions is never easy, but it’s part of the gig.

From 2017-2019, Venus or Serena Williams was in the final. The pick here is tough, but it will be Simona Halep. She won it in 2019 and will be doing so again now in 2021. Bet on it. Book it. Bang.

Men’s Winner

With so much riding on this major for several players, the outcome will be highly relevant. Federer is gunning for #21 to put some space between himself and the other two on his tail. Nadal will not be partaking, while Djokovic is at 19 right now.

The bet’s name has actually already been mentioned. Djokovic is on such a hot streak right now, and it will not be changing anytime soon. He sees the chance to retire as the best men’s player of all-time by Grand Slam titles won, and a victory now could go a long way for him.

Given that he won Roland Garros and seemed to be in great shape, he looks poised to have another great run.

The grass-court event at the All England Club in London begins Monday. As of now, we have the latest Tennis betting odds to win Wimbledon. Here’s a breakdown of the tournament.

2017 Wimbledon Betting Odds & Predictions

Federer Goes For No. 8

First, know that Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament in which seedings do not automatically follow the rankings, with greater weight being given to recent results on grass in the men’s event or in past Wimbledons.

Thus even though Roger Federer is the No. 5 player in the world rankings, he’s the third seed. And Federer, at age 35, is the +230 betting favorite. He’s currently tied with Pete Sampras for the most Wimbledon title in the open era with seven.

How Well has Federer Done This Year?

Of course Federer surprisingly won the Australian Open back in January for his record 18 th Grand Slam title. It had been five years since Federer won a Grand Slam — he beat Andy Murray in the 2012 Wimbledon final — before conquering the hard courts of Melbourne.

However, he skipped the French Open – clay is his worst surface – to focus on Wimbledon. It was the second year in a row that Federer pulled out of the French Open. He won the title at the clay-court major in 2009 to complete a career Grand Slam.

What About Andy Murray?

Defending champion and world No. 1 Murray has been named the top seed at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. Murray is the second betting favorite but there are health concerns.

A sore hip forced him to pull out of Wednesday’s scheduled exhibition match at the Hurlingham Club in England. Murray has played only one match on the grass this season, and that was an underwhelming straight-sets defeat against world No. 90 Jordan Thompson in the first round at Queen’s.

Last year, Murray won his second Wimbledon title with a straight sets win over Canada’s Milos Raonic.

Djokovic and Nadal Won’t Be Left Behind

Novak Djokovic is the second seed and Rafael Nadal the fourth. It is the first time the Big Four of men's tennis have been the top four seeds at a Slam since Wimbledon 2014, with world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, who has never reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, seeded fifth.

Djokovic (+500) is a three-time Wimbledon champion but in a major slump this year. The former world number one held all four Grand Slam titles going into last year’s Championships, but now holds none.

Nadal (+380) has won Wimbledon twice and comes off a 10th French Open title, the first player ever to win a Slam 10 times.

Women’s Side Wide Open

Just like the French Open, the women’s side is almost impossible to handicap it’s so wide open. That’s because seven-time champion Serena Williams isn’t playing the rest of this year due to her pregnancy. And Maria Sharapova, a Wimbledon champion and once a runner-up, is out as well.

Karolina Pliskova is the +380 favorite even though she has never advanced past the second round at Wimbledon and has reached one final in her Grand Slam career. She is seeded third.

Pliskova made her grand slam breakthrough with a run to the U.S. Open final last year, beating Serena along the way, and followed up by making the quarterfinals in Australia. At the French, she lost in the semifinals to Simona Halep.

Is Petra Kvitova a Threat?

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is +400. She missed the first five months of the season after injuring her hand fending off an attacker in her home. Kvitova returned for the French Open. She is seeded 11th.

World No. 1 Angelique Kerber is seeded first and +1100. She lost in the final last year but took the No. 1 ranking from Serena by winning the U.S. Open. However, Kerber is having a really down season, punctuated by a shocking first-round loss at the French Open.

As Usual, a Williams Sister Will Be There

The top American hope, men or women, is five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams. She is +1000 and seeded 10 th . Venus last won the title in 2008 but did reach the Aussie Open final in January, losing to her sister.

The chances of tennis fans seeing world No. 1 Novak Djokovic complete the rare calendar-year grand slam got a bit better on Thursday. That’s because Rafael Nadal pulled out of Wimbledon with a wrist injury, and certainly Nadal — if he was healthy — is one of likely just a few men who realistically would have had a shot to beat Djokovic on the grass of the All-England Club, although he wasn’t the favorite in the sports betting odds.

After losing in the first round of the Australian Open in January, Nadal had been having a resurgent spring on clay, winning in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and reaching the semifinals in Madrid. At the recently-completed French Open, the season’s second major, Nadal was trying for an amazing 10th title on the red clay of Paris. Nadal entered the tournament despite the wrist bothering him. He was able to play his second-round match, which he won, after receiving an injection to numb the pain. His victory that day over Facundo Bagnis made him just the eighth man in history to win 200 matches at Grand Slam tournaments. However, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament the following day.

The 30-year-old Nadal said he risked further injury — and a likely break in his wrist — if he continued to play. The current world No. 4 had already pulled out of next week’s Wimbledon grass-court warm up at Queen’s Club. Nadal’s wrist problem is the latest in a long list of injuries, including to his knees, back and shoulder, which have seen him miss a number of majors in his career. He withdrew from the 2014 US Open with a right wrist injury, for example.

Nadal has won Wimbledon twice, in 2008 and 2010. Nadal was listed at +2000 on betting odds for this year’s championship. Nadal had failed to go beyond the fourth round in the last four years at Wimbledon, losing to Lukas Rosol, Steve Darcis, Nick Kyrgios and Dustin Brown. Now the question is whether Nadal will be ready for the Summer Olympics. The Olympic tennis tournament in Rio de Janeiro begins Aug. 6, and Nadal was chosen as Spain’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony. Nadal badly wants to play in Rio after missing the 2012 Games in London due to injury.

Djokovic is riding a 28-match grand slam win streak and can equal Pete Sampras’ career total of 14 grand slam titles this year — all before his 30th birthday. Djokovic of course won the Australian Open and French Open this year to become the first player since the legendary Rod Laver to hold all four major titles at once. The French Open was the only major tournament that Djokovic hadn’t won. He is the -140 favorite on betting lines for Wimbledon. Djokovic is the two-time defending champion and also won in 2011.

Last year, Djokovic beat Roger Federer in the final, 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-3. He hit 46 winners and made 16 unforced errors, compared to Federer’s 58 winners but noteworthy 35 unforced errors. The slower conditions of the last decade at Wimbledon have contributed to the success of baseline players such as Djokovic while not helping the attack-minded like Federer.

Federer was, for the second consecutive season, deprived of becoming the first man to win eight Wimbledon titles and its oldest men’s champion in the Open Era. Federer didn’t play the French Open this year due to injury and so he could be 100 percent healthy for Wimbledon. He wants that record and is +600 on betting lines to win.

Wimbledon begins on June 27, with the draw on June 24.
