Favorite: Boston Celtics
Although the odds might change on the Celtics, no doubt, they will remain the favorite. But don’t be surprised if by next week there is a new king of the hill.
The Celtics have come crashing down to earth. Boston is 5-5 straight up in their last 10. The C’s are on a 2-game losing streak as of Dec. 20.
The Bucks have gone 7-3 in their last 10. Not only that, but Milwaukee has overtaken Boston for the Eastern Conference’s top seed. Milwaukee is a half a game ahead of the Celtics for the top spot, which is why Boston’s stranglehold on the favorite’s status is tenuous.
If Boston’s odds rise, does that make them a possible play to win it all? It could. Boston has a very good team. But wait for the new odds before deciding to take a bite.
Smart: New Orleans Pelicans
From Dec. 13 through Dec. 19, the Pelicans lost 4 straight. But although the Pels are in the midst of a losing streak, it doesn’t mean we should bail on Zion Williamson and his squad.
In fact, because of the losing streak, New Orleans should offer better odds than expected. The Pelicans are for sure good enough to win the title.
Led by Zion, the starting five is a talented bunch. CJ McCollum is a huge boost to the Pel’s title chances.
Star Brandon Ingram is out another week. When he returns, New Orleans, no doubt, will once against start winning basketball games.
Longshot: Dallas Mavericks
As of Dec. 20, the Dallas Mavericks sit 1-game below .500. The Mavs have gone 5-5 in their last 10 and have lost 2 straight. So when new odds land, Dallas should offer overlay odds to grab the title.
Luka Doncic continues to play great. The real key is how well Dorian Finney-Smith plays. Finney-Smith is out right now. When he returns, and if he can form a solid frontline with Dwight Powell, the Mavericks should start to win games.
At the expected odds, Dallas is worth a look for sure. Once Finney-Smith returns to the lineup, the Mavs should find a way to gel and become one of the Western Conference’s top teams.
