The PGA Tour schedule turns to July and makes its annual stop in Silvis, Illinois, and TPC Deere Run for the 2023 John Deere Classic. The JDC has been a part of the PGA Tour since 1971, when former PGA commissioner Deane Beman won the inaugural Quad Cities Invitational. Traditionally played in July, in recent seasons, the tournament was the final chance for players to earn an exemption into the Open Championship.

To win here you have to score in bunches, with the average winning total hovering just over 20-under. J.T. Poston returns to Silvis to defend his title after firing a four-day total of 263 (21-under) to defeat Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo by a comfortable three shots. The win was Poston’s second PGA Tour victory.

The course has been the venue of the JDC since it was established in 2000. Designed by five-time PGA Tour winner D.A. Weibring, the stadium course plays as a par-71 and stretches over 7,200 yards.

Accuracy is paramount off the tee, with many of the holes featuring tree-lined fairways that can penalize an errant shot off the tee box. If players find the short grass, they’ll have excellent opportunities for birdie chances with their approaches.

In addition to the tree-lined fairways, the course features rolling hills and over 70+ bunkers. With relatively flat greens, excelling with the flat stick is a deciding factor for those players looking to have a chance to win the tournament.

John Deere Classic Field

The field at the JDC lacks star power but offers golf fans a glimpse into the future with many up-and-coming stars of the game teeing up. Cameron Young is the only player ranked inside the Official World Golf Rankings in the field this week.

Joining Poston this week are past winners Lucas Glover, Dylan Frittelli, Michael Kim, Ryan Moore, Zach Johnson, and three-time winner Steve Stricker. Johnson is an Iowa native and Stricker hails from nearby Edgerton, Wisconsin.

Recent PGA Tour winners Seamus Power, Russell Henley, Adam Svensson, Sepp Straka, and Nico Echavarria are teeing it up this week looking for their second victory of the season.

Betting Odds

Heading into the tournament it is Denny McCarthy who was the pre-tournament betting favorite to win this week. If McCarthy can convert, it’ll secure the 30-year-olds first win on the PGA Tour. Henley, Young, and Adam Schenk also were atop the odds boards, with Young and Schenk also looking to win for the first time on Tour. The JDC has been a spot for numerous first-time PGA Tour winners.

Just outside of the favorites sits Adam Hadwin, Eric Cole, and rookie Ludvig Aberg. Hadwin lost in a playoff last week to Rickie Fowler at the Rocket Mortgage Classic but heads to Silvis making five of his last six cuts. Cole, a long-time mini-tour player, earned his card via the Korn Ferry Tour last season and has taken advantage of sitting 40th in the FedEx Cup standings. Aberg turned pro following a decorated collegiate career at Texas Tech and has made the cut in all five of the events he’s played in this year.

The John Deere Classic returns to the PGA Tour schedule after a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19. The tournament will celebrate its 50th year as a Tour event when the first wave of players tee off Thursday morning in Silvis, IL.

The winner of the tournament receives $1.116 million of the $6.2 million purse along with 500 FedEx Cup points. Additionally, if the winner is not already exempt from the Open Championship, they lock in a spot in next week’s major.

Dylan Frittelli is the defending 2019 champion after finishing the tournament at -21, two strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Let’s take a closer at the favorites so you can get ready to bet against their PGA Tour lines.

The Course

TPC Deere Run is a par-71 track where players can take advantage of birdies in bunches. Players that want to win the tournament will need to shoot around 20-under to have a shot on Sunday afternoon. Five of the last six winners shot 20-under or better en route to victory.

Known for its elevation changes, the D.A. Weibring design offers numerous risk/reward shots. The course stretches 7,268 yards and was owned in 1971. Michael Kim set the tournament record in 2018 with a four-day total of 27-under.

The Field

You won’t find any of the top names teeing it up this weekend, as many are either playing in the Scottish Open or are gearing up for the final major next weekend. Daniel Berger, the 16th ranked player in the world, is the highest player teeing it up in the event.

Other notable players include Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, Brian Harman, Kevin Na, and Hudson Swafford. Frittelli returns to defend his title as well as 2019 runner-up Russell Henley. Iowa native Zach Johnson, tournament winner in 2012, makes his 19th appearance in the JDC.

You get to see a regional set of college graduates tee it up thanks to sponsorship exemptions. Michael Feagles (Illinois), Alex Schaake (Iowa), Tripp Kinney (Iowa State), and David Perkins (Illinois State) will showcase their talents on golf’s biggest stage.

The 2019 runner-up posted a T13 at the U.S. Open, followed up by a T19 at the Travelers Championship the following week. Henley cashed in on 15 of 20 events played this season, logging four top-10s, including a pair of third-place finishes.

Henley’s last win on tour came in 2017 at the Houston Open, but the 32-year old has returned to form this season. Henley ranks 3rd on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach to the Green and 21st in SG: Total.

Finding the winner of a PGA Tournament is incredibly difficult. Let’s take a look at the favorites, second choices, and underdogs.

The Favorites

Molinari didn’t even tee off at last year’s John Deere Classic. He did win the Quicken Loans Arena a couple of weeks ago, though. He also finished a respectable 25^th at the U.S. Open. That’s why he’s garnered favoritism.

DeChambeau won this tournament last year. He’ll be in the hunt, but of the favorites, Zach Johnson appears best suited to taking home the trophy. He was only 3 strokes off DeChambeau, -15 to -18, at the 2017 John Deere Classic.

The Second Choices

Moore didn’t even make the cut in last year’s tournament. He’s most likely in this tournament to practice shots for The Open Championship. Niemann finished tied at -6 with Brandt Snedeker at the Greenbrier Classic last weekend. Snedeker offers +2200 odds. Niemann offers +1600 odds.

Snedeker could use this as a warm up to The Open Championship. That means the pick in the second choices category is old pro Steve Stricker. Stricker lives in reality. He’s got to take his shots when they come up. Winning the John Deere Classic is something he can do this weekend. Winning The Open next week? Probably not.

The Underdogs

Chris Kirk only shot a 6 under at last year’s John Deere Classic. At -6, Kirk was well off winner Bryson DeChambeau’s -18. However, Kirk did play well at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in his last between June 7 and June 10.

Kirk hasn’t played competitively since then. My guess is that he’s been pointing towards the John Deere Classic. He most likely won’t make the trip overseas to battle in The Open Championship like Ryan Moore and Brandt Snedeker.

I believe he’s got a huge shot to win the John Deere Classic trophy at amazing odds.

The week before the British Open is something of a strange one in the PGA. Yes, there is a tournament on tap in the States, but it is generally occupied by some of the lesser lights on the tour. With that in mind, we have the latest golf odd to win the 2017 John Deere Classic with their betting preview.

Those who have stayed behind will be taking part in the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Illinois. With $5.6 million in prize money up for grabs, it’s certainly a good reason to stay back and play.

There are not a lot of truly big names in the field this weekend, which makes handicapping this event a little tougher. There are some definite favorites, though, as well as a couple of sleepers, and we are going to look at those players while making a prediction as to who will walk away with the top prize.

Daniel Berger (+1000)

After a disappointing US Open showing where he failed to make the cut, Berger has bounced back in a big way, winning the St. Jude FedEx Classic and finishing second at the Travelers.

Berger is also hanging around in the FedEx Cup standings, currently sitting in 9 th place. A win here would add some very valuable points to his tally, and may even move him up the list just a little. I am not often fond of picking the favorite to win, but I think Daniel Berger will be atop the leaderboard on Sunday.

Brian Harman (+1100)

Harman had a great showing at the US Open, where he finished in 2 nd spot. He already has a win on the tour this season at the Wells Fargo Championship, and is currently sitting just outside the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings. Speaking of top 10’s, Harman has had 6 of them this season, so no reason why he should not be in contention over the weekend.

Charley Hoffman (+1100)

While Hoffman has yet to pick up a win on tour this season, he has come close on several occasions. He has 5 top 10 finished to his name this season, with his best showing being a 2 nd place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. One of those top 10’s came at the US Open, where Hoffman was 8 th , so no reason he can’t hang with this group.

Danny Lee (+1300)

The New Zealand native has only 1 career win in the PGA, and that one came back in 2015. That said, he has two top 10 finishes in his last 3 events, so it’s fair to say that he is in good form right now.

He has also made the cut in each of his last 8 tournaments, so this is a guy that we can expect to see on the weekend. Whether he can make the top of the leaderboard is another question entirely, and I need to say that I am not convinced he can.

Kevin Kisner (+1600)

Another player who is currently in the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings, and who already has a win under the belt this season. Kisner walked away a winner at the Dean and Deluca Invitational earlier in the season, and all told, he has 6 top 10 finishes to his name. He was disappointing at the US Open and failed to make the cut at the Greenbrier Classic last week, so not really in the best of form right now.

Charles Howell (+3000)

I think this is a great price for a guy that is just a couple of weeks removed from a 2 nd place finish at the Quicken Loans National. He had a bit of a tough go of it at the Greenbrier last week, but he could very well bounce back here and add to the 5 top 10 finishes that he has already put together this season. Definitely one to watch at an excellent price.
