Series History

The Knicks trail the all-time series 107-104 but lead it 1-0 this season thanks to a 121-102 victory in Brooklyn on Dec. 20. Julius Randle scored 26 points and Donte DiVincenzo added 23 as the Knicks got their first victory at Barclays Center since Dec. 26, 2019. Cam Thomas and Cam Johnson each scored 20 points for the Nets on Dec. 20. Mikal Bridges was 4 for 21 for 15 points. The Knicks lost nine straight meetings when Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were in Brooklyn but have easily won all three matchups since the Nets traded the two stars last season.

Why Bet on New York Knicks?

The Knicks won their third game in a row Saturday, 126-100 over Toronto – the first meeting between the clubs since New York traded OG Anunoby to the Raptors a few weeks ago for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.

Jalen Brunson dominated with 38 points, nine assists and five rebounds, his fourth consecutive outing with 30 or more points. Brunson has been outstanding of late, averaging 28.9 points, 8.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game in nine January appearances. He joined Julius Randle, Carmelo Anthony, and Walt Frazier as the only players to record at least 35 points, five rebounds, and five assists in back-to-back games in franchise history. Brunson is shooting 42.7% from downtown on the season, which leads the league by players who have shot a minimum of 250 three-point attempts this season.

Randle had 18 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists on Saturday. Aside from posting his first triple-double of the season and delivering a season-high mark in assists, Randle also scored in double digits for the eighth consecutive contest. Randle is averaging 25.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game in that span. It was Randle’s 14th career triple double and his eighth as a Knick. It also marked Randle’s second game as a Knick with at least 15 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. He is now tied with Frazier for the second most such games in franchise history.

Now with Randle and Brunson the more streamlined ball-handlers in the starting unit without Barrett, Randle has the ball in his hands even more and drives more of the offense. He’s subsequently drawn more double-teams, which has opened things up for the Knicks’ periphery scorers.

“Every time I got it, they were bringing two [defenders],” Randle said after Saturday’s game. “That was kind of my mindset coming in, be aggressive but kind of read and take what the defense is giving me. That’s kind of how I’ve been seeing it the past few games. I’ve been able to score the ball at a high clip. But if they double-team me, I gotta be able to make the right plays.”

Knicks center Precious Achiuwa finished with 18 points on Saturday — by far his season-high with either team — in 25 minutes off the bench along with 11 rebounds and a block. The 25 minutes were a season-high as well. He shot a near-perfect 9-of-10 from the floor. Achiuwa also came over in the trade. The Knicks are 9-2 since the deal, and Anunoby’s plus-190 rating on the court is the best in the NBA since Jan. 1.

Starting center Isaiah Hartenstein, who has filled in admirably since Mitchell Robinson has been sidelined with an ankle injury, exited Saturday’s game with a sore ankle in the third quarter and did not return. He’s still dealing with soreness and was held out of Monday’s practice. Since entering the starting lineup, Hartenstein (nine starts) is the only player in the NBA to tally 30+ offensive rebounds, 25+ assists, 10+ steals and 10+ blocks.

If Hartenstein isn’t able to play against the Nets, coach Tom Thibodeau said guys like Jericho Sims and Achiuwa will need to step up. He also mentioned the possibility of Julius Randle and OG Anunoby filling in at center.

Why Bet on Brooklyn Nets?

The Nets lost for the 10th time in 12 games Sunday, 125-114 at the Clippers. Kawhi Leonard scored 14 of his 21 points in the final five minutes and the Clippers overcame an 18-point deficit with a game-ending 22-0 run. The Clippers took their first lead on Leonard’s basket with 2:50 remaining. Their stunning run ended with Leonard’s 3-pointer from the corner to win. The Nets, who were 14 of 39 from 3-point range, couldn’t make a basket during the Clippers’ turnaround. They were held to 15 points in the fourth.

“We were stuck, didn’t know what to do or how to break it,” Mikal Bridges said. He finished with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. Bridges has recorded 25 or more points in 10 games this season, including in three of his last five games. He has tallied at least five rebounds and five assists in 10 contests. In Bridges’ last three, he’s shot 45.8 percent from downtown, going 11-of-24.

Spencer Dinwiddie added 16 points and seven assists. He has recorded at least 15 points and five assists in 15 games, including in two of his last three outings. Dinwiddie is fifth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.09) among 100 players averaging 30.0 at least 30 minutes.

Cam Thomas added 20 points off the bench. He has scored 20 or more points in 19 games this year, including in four of his last five contests. Thomas is 13th in the league and seventh in the East in usage rate (.298) and is second in the league in ppg among reserves at 18.3.

Lonnie Walker leads the league in ppg (12.7) among all players averaging fewer than 20.0 minutes per game. Among 43 reserves with at least 100 three-point attempts, Walker ranks second in the league in three-point percentage, trailing only Aaron Nesmith (.468).

Day’Ron Sharpe is second in the league in rebound % (.203) and in offensive rebound % (.165) and is 10th in defensive rebound % (.241). Sharpe, Andre Drummond and Rudy Gobert are the only players in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive rebound percentage. Sharpe leads the league in offensive rebounds off the bench and is second in total rebounds off the bench.

The Nets now sit with 12 losses in games where they led or trailed by at least five points in the final five minutes. That’s the sixth most in the NBA. They also have the fifth lowest win percentage in said games this year. Brooklyn is 7-2 this season when shooting at least 50% from the field. The Nets are 6-1 when they have double-digit steals in a game.
