It’s a Shohei Ohtani night in Miami on Wednesday as the Angels’ dual-threat star takes the mound – and will bat as usual – against the Marlins, who might actually draw a nice crowd for once. The Angels are favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on LA Angels?
The Halos remain without interim manager Phil Nevin as he serves a 10-game suspension. Coach Ray Montgomery served the final game of his two-game suspension Monday, after handling acting managing duties for the first five games of Nevin’s suspension; he’ll reassume the acting manager role Wednesday.
LA designated infielder Jack Mayfield for assignment. The move was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Touki Toussaint who was acquired from the Braves on Sunday. Mayfield has struggled in his time with the Angels this season, hitting just .186/.230/.271 with one homer and one steal in 74 plate appearances. Toussaint had struggled to a 6.26 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 53/25 K/BB ratio over 41 2/3 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Still, this was one of the top pitching prospects in the game just a few years ago.
Infielder Michael Stefanic was out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. He struck out in all three of his at-bats in his MLB debut in Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Astros. Interim manager Phil Nevin suggested that Stefanic will receive an opportunity to play on a regular basis.
It’s Shohei Ohtani (7-4, 2.68 ERA) on the mound for the Angels. Ohtani struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball in last Wednesday’s 4-1 win over the White Sox. He allowed five hits with one walk on 108 pitches. The reigning AL MVP is up to four starts of double-digit strikeouts in 13 starts this season. Ohtani of the Angels is just the fourth pitcher in the past 10 years with 30+ strikeouts and no runs allowed in a three-start span.
In his last four pitching starts, Ohtani is 4-0 with a 0.34 ERA (26.2 IP – 1 ER) and 36 strikeouts and has an active streak of 21.2 consecutive scoreless innings. In that same span (since June 9), he is batting .324 (23/71) with four doubles, one triple, seven HR, 18 RBI, 12 BB and a 1.116 OPS. Ohtani has joined Nolan Ryan (1972) as the only Angels pitchers to go 4-0 with an ERA below 0.35 and 36+ strikeouts in a four-game span.
Why Bet on Miami?
The Marlins have played 30 games this season decided by one run, tied with Toronto for most such games in the Majors in 2022. They have a Major League-leading 17 losses in such games.
Infielder Jon Berti remained absent from the Marlins’ starting lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Angels. It was surprising to see Berti sitting for the second consecutive contest, especially since he doesn’t appear to be dealing with an injury. The 32-year-old infielder, who leads the majors with 25 stolen bases in 49 games this season, should be back in there on Wednesday evening.
Berti is the eighth player (13th occurrence) in club history to record 25-or-more stolen bases prior to the All-Star Break. The last Marlins player to do so was Dee Strange-Gordon, who stole 32 bases prior to the 2017 All-Star Break. Four teams have stolen 25 or fewer bases this season – San Diego (25), Detroit (17), Colorado (16) and Minnesota (13).
The Marlins have hit five home runs this season in the ninth inning or extra innings (four of which have come on the road) that have put the team in the lead. That is tied with Philadelphia for the most such homers in the majors this season. Jesus Sanchez has 5 go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning or later, which lead the club this season and are tied for the third-most in MLB this year.
It’s lefty Trevor Rogers (4-6, 5.56) on the mound. Rogers gave up a run over five innings last Friday as the Marlins beat the Nationals. Rogers scattered two hits, walked three, and struck out four. While he did give up just one run, it was his 13th start striking out five or less batters.
Rogers has allowed 10 home runs in 68.0 IP this year after allowing 6 in 133.0 IP in 2021. He 1-1 in June with a 7.06 ERA in 5 starts. Allowed 17 earned runs and 15 walks in 21.2 innings. Struck out 21. This will be his first career start vs. the Angels.
