Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros Series: Thursday, July 6th to Sunday, July 9th, 2023
Thursday: George Kirby (Seattle) vs Framber Valdez (Houston)
Kirby has been a workhorse for Seattle this season with 101 innings. He is 7-7 on the season, with a 3.21 earned run average. He is coming off an outing where he beat the Giants 6-0, by throwing 7 innings, and allowing just 2 hits and 2 runs in a win over the Rays.
Framber Valdez will make his first start since June 27th. In that game, he was banged up by St. Louis and will to the IR with an ankle injury. On the season, the 29-year-old lefthander is 7-6, with a 2.49 earned run average.
Friday: Luis Castillo (Seattle) vs. Hunter Brown (Houston)
Luis Castillo, at age 30, continues to put up impressive numbers for the Seattle Mariners. Castillo has 114 strikeouts this season in 100 innings pitched. He does not have a great record, at 5-6, but his serviceable 3.05 gets him the baseball every 5 days. Castillo is coming off an outing against the Rays on July 2nd, where he allowed 6 runs, 4 earned over 6 innings.
Hunter Brown is a 24-year-old righthander from Detroit, Michigan. Brown has been solid this season with a 6-5 record and a 3.76 earned run average. Brown has struck out 103 batters over 91 innings, while walking just 30. The youngster will be making just his 19th career start in this one.
Saturday: Bryan Woo (Seattle) vs. Cristian Javier (Houston)
The 23-year-old, Bryan Woo will be making just his 7th career start. His last two outings, he’s struck out 7 batters. Over his last five outings, he has struck out 35 batters. During those five starts, Woo has allowed just a total of 7 earned runs.
Javier comes into the game at 7-1 on the season. The 26 year old has a 4.34 earned run average. He will be making his 18th start of the season, and 62nd in his career. Javier has been roughed up in his last three starts, allowing 18 earned runs over just 10.2 innings.
Sunday: Logan Gilbert vs. Brandon Bielak (Houston)
Gilbert will make his 18th and final start of the first half of the season. The 26-year-old has thrown over 101 innings already this season, and struck out 100 batters. In his last start, he wasn’t terrible, but took a loss to the Giants. On the season, Gilbert is 6-5, with a 3.82 ERA.
For Bielak, he has made just 9 starts this season, and thrown 54 innings. In those innings, he has allowed 60 hits, 23 earned runs, 10 home runs, while striking out 41 batters. In his career, the 27-year-old has made just 16 starts.
Houston Seeking Consistency
As the All-Star break approaches, the Astros are seeking a little consistency. The Astros are not concerned about being 3 games back of Texas, and they would prefer to play better baseball themselves. The Astros have won six of seven games, and during those six wins, the Houston Astros are scoring over 8 runs per game.
Houston is 10th in baseball with over 400 runs, and the team is hitting .249. Yordan Alvarez continues to be a thorn in the side of opposing pitchers with 17 big fly’s and 55 runs batted in. Kyle Tucker is having a solid season for Houston, leading the team at .293, and 55 runs batted in as well.
Mariners Seeking to Make a Run
With three teams making the American League Wildcard, the Seattle Mariners know they are not out of the race yet. The Mariners, over their current four-game winning streak, are scoring more than 6 runs per game. Before the four-game winning streak though, Seaettle allowed 26 runs in three straight losses.
Ty France leads the team with a .267 batting average, while Teoscar Hernandez has belted 15 home runs. Eugenio Suarez continues to produce as the third base man for Seattle. The slugger leads the team with 49 runs batted in.
Great Weekend Series in the American League West
These two teams know each other well, but have not played for nearly two months. The last time they played, Seattle came away with a 3-1 win over the Astros. Look for a mixture of both good pitching, and then also some big-time hitting. Do not be surprised if these two familiar foes split the four-game series heading into the MLB All Star Game.
