Game 1 of the NLCS was a blowout for the host Dodgers and they look for a 2-0 lead on Monday afternoon but will be using a bullpen day against excellent Mets starter Sean Manaea.
LA is favored on the MLB odds before the series takes a Tuesday off for travel.
Opening MLB Lines Subject to Change: Dodgers -139, Mets +118 (total 8.5) Expert Prediction: Mets 4, Dodgers 3 |
Why Bet on New York?
Ahead of Game 1, the Mets added second baseman and former batting champion Jeff McNeil to their NLCS roster after he successfully completed two games over the weekend in the Arizona Fall League. McNeil was on the bench for NLCS Game 1 but could draw a start or two later in the series – perhaps today.
“It’s going to change day to day,” McNeil said of his role. “Be ready to come off the bench. Take some big at-bats. The Dodgers are right-handed heavy, so I’m sure there’s going to be some at-bats.”
The roster casualty was reliever Adam Ottavino, a veteran reliever who was on the Wild Card Series and Division Series rosters but never appeared in a game.

Game 1 Review
The Mets looked totally flat off their NLDS win over the Phillies and with a few days rest as they were clobbered 9-0 in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night. Manager Carlos Mendoza made the bold move of giving Kodai Senga only his third start on the mound of the year due to injury and he wasn’t up to the task. Senga walked four batters, threw a wild pitch, committed a pitch clock violation, served up two hits, recorded only four outs and allowed the first three runs.
Kodai Senga
Senga threw 13 of his first 16 pitches outside the strike zone while topping out at 94.5 mph — two and a half ticks lower than he did in NLDS Game 1 against the Phillies on Oct. 5. His average fastball velocity was nearly a full mile per hour slower on Sunday. “He was off,” Mendoza said. “He didn’t have it.”
The Offensive
Offensively, the Mets gathered only two hits off Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty, who spared their overtaxed shutdown bullpen with seven scoreless innings, helping bring the Dodgers’ NL record for one postseason to 33 consecutive such innings, tying the postseason record of the legendary 1966 Orioles, who did it to the Dodgers in the ’66 World Series. The one inning that began promisingly for the Mets, the fifth with two straight hits, was undermined when Jesse Winker got caught between second and third after Jose Iglesias followed his single with one of his own.
“It’s just baseball,” Iglesias said. “We are going to come back tomorrow with the best energy and continue to compete.”
Sean Manaea
It’s lefty on the mound Monday. The 32-year-old was 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA this season. He started Game 3 of the NLDS against the Phillies last Tuesday and allowed one run in seven innings to get the win. Manaea gave up three hits, walked two and struck out six. The southpaw entered these playoffs with a 15.26 ERA in three postseason games. In his first outing this October, he held the Brewers to two runs in five innings and brushed off any concerns that he is not built for the big games.
Manaea held the Dodgers to two runs over five innings in their only meeting this season, rebounding from a lengthy history of struggles against them. He spent the two previous years in the NL West, with the Padres and Giants, seeing the Dodgers often and enjoying seeing them rarely, posting a 7.09 ERA in 11 career games against Los Angeles.
“Some teams have had my number over the years,” said Manaea. “And I feel like I’ve had to — the baseball gods have given me the opportunities to go out there and prove again and again, just to be able to go out there and find some good results. And this team is no different.”
^Why Bet on Los Angeles?
The Dodgers rolled in Game 1, 9-0, behind a dominant outing from Jack Flaherty, backed up by scoreless relief from Daniel Hudson and Ben Casparius to complete the shutout. Los Angeles is the sixth team (eighth occurrence) to win by at least nine runs while throwing a shutout in the League Championship Series.

Since the LCS moved to its current seven-game format in 1985, the winner of the first game of the NLCS has advanced to the Fall Classic 26 times (68.4%). That has been the case in two of the last three years (Philadelphia in 2022 and Atlanta in 2021), eight of the last 11 seasons and in 22 of the last 29 years dating back to 1995.
The Record
The Dodgers are now 24-33 all-time in Game 1 of a postseason series, including 10-21 in Game 1 of a best-of-seven series overall, and 3-8 in Game 1 of the NLCS (since 1985). Sunday was the Dodgers’ first win in the opening game of the NLCS since they topped the Chicago Cubs in 2017. The winner of Game 1 has won Game 2 of the NLCS in two of the last three seasons. Since 1985, 14 clubs have advanced to the World Series after winning Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS.
Each player in the Dodgers starting lineup safely reached base in Game 1, marking the first time every batter in Los Angeles’ starting lineup reached base in a Postseason game since October 12, 2022. Max Muncy opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run single in the first inning. In the regular season, the Dodgers were 68-15 when scoring first and are now 3-1 in the postseason when scoring the game’s first run. After winning the opening game of 32 series in the regular season, 16 of which came at home, the Dodgers have now won the opening game in each of their postseason series this year.
The only negative news was second baseman Gavin Lux leaving Game 1 due to hip flexor tightness. Lux talked to a trainer after grounding out in the sixth inning and didn’t take the field to start the seventh frame. He likely won’t start today. First baseman Freddie Freeman is hobbling through an injury but should start.
Dave Roberts
On the mound, Dodgers manager Roberts hasn’t announced who will start as it will be a bullpen day. Originally it was thought Walker Buehler would get the call first but that will not be the case. Buehler will likely slot in as the team’s Game 3 starter, though that hasn’t been confirmed. It could be Ryan Brasier starting today. He was 1-0 with a 3.54 ERA in 29 appearances, four of those as an opener. In these playoffs, he has a 4.91 ERA in three appearances spanning 3.2 innings.
Pitchers Stats
Dodgers pitchers have thrown 33 straight scoreless innings, tying the longest streak by a pitching staff within a single postseason and the longest by a National League squad. The 1966 Baltimore Orioles also had a 33-inning scoreless innings streak in Games 1-4 of the World Series, coincidentally against the Dodgers. LA allowed just three hits in Game 1, marking the second time this postseason that Los Angeles limited its opponent to three-or-fewer hits.
Overall, it was the 22nd time in Dodgers’ postseason history that they allowed three-or-fewer hits. The Dodgers have allowed 12 hits over the last three games, marking the sixth time in Dodgers postseason history that they have allowed 12-or-fewer hits in a three-game stretch.

Why Bet on Arizona?
Arizona suffered its first loss of these playoffs on Monday, 5-3 in Game 1 of the NLCS. Ketel Marte was 1-for-4 in the loss and has now hit safely in each of his first 10 career postseason games, becoming the first Diamondback in team history to do so. Overall, he’s the 14th player in MLB history to hit safely in his first 10 career postseason games.
Geraldo Perdomo swatted a two-run homer in a bright spot. The 23-year-old shortstop finally got the Diamondbacks on the board in this one, tagging Phillies’ ace Zack Wheeler for a 345-foot two-run shot in the sixth inning. Perdomo struck out in each of his other two plate appearances in the ballgame, finishing the night 1-for-3. Overall for the postseason, he’s hitting just .200 (3-for-15) with a pair of homers, three RBI and four runs scored.
The Diamondbacks have now homered in 17 consecutive postseason games dating to Game 3 of the 2007 NLCS at Colorado (October 14, 2007). The streak is the second-longest in MLB postseason history behind a 23-game homer streak by the Yankees from 2019-2022. Perdomo’s homer also gave the D-Backs nine homers by players 23 or younger this Postseason, third-most in a single Postseason behind the 2015 Cubs (11) and 2017 Astros (nine).
Evan Longoria appeared in his first LCS game since 2008 when he did so with Tampa Bay. Longoria is the fourth player (and first non-pitcher) to appear in a LCS 15+ years after his prior appearance.
It’s right-hander Merrill Kelly on the mound here. Kelly delivered a dominant performance in Game 1 of the NLDS — allowing just three hits and a pair of walks over 6 1/3 scoreless frames in a win over the Dodgers. The 34-year-old hurler punched out five batters as the Diamondbacks staked him to a six-run lead in the top half of the first inning. Kelly generated eight swings and misses on 89 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 27 percent.
Kelly became the fourth D-backs starting pitcher (fifth time) to not allow a run in a postseason start (also: 2001, 4x – Miguel Batista on Nov. 1 @ Yankees in WS, Randy Johnson on Oct. 16 vs. Braves in NLCS and on Oct. 28 vs. Yankees in WS, Curt Schilling on Oct. 9 vs. Cardinals in NLDS).
During the regular season, Kelly ranked fifth in the NL with a 3.29 ERA, sixth with a .222 OPP AVG, ninth with a .600 winning pct., 10th with a 1.19 WHIP. He’ll return to the mound well-rested for Arizona following a 10-day layoff. Kelly faced the Phillies on June 14 at Chase Field and allowed three runs in six innings in a no-decision.
“I know it’s a different city, different team, different stadium, different fans,” Kelly said. “I would say [I’ll] try to treat it just like we’ve treated every other game in the playoffs so far … obviously not make the situation bigger than it already is.”

Why Bet on Philadelphia?
Teams like Philadelphia who win Game 1 in a best-of-seven series go on to win the series 121 of 188 times (64%). In series using the current 2-3-2 format, teams taking a 1-0 lead at home have gone on to win 65 of 97 times (67%).
Philadelphia improved to 27-11 (.711) in playoff home games at Citizens Bank Park since they played their first one in 2007. In 12 NLCS games at this facility, the Phils are now 10-2. The Phils .711 win % at CBP is the highest of any team in any ballpark in postseason history (min. 20 games played at the facility). Philadelphia has now won 10 straight postseason games against the National League at home, the longest such streak in MLB history.
With his solo home run in the first inning Monday, Bryce Harper became the fourth player in postseason history to homer on his birthday. Harper was the oldest player of the group as he turned 31 Monday. It was Harper’s 10th career postseason homer as a Phillie. He’s now tied for second-most in Phillies history with Chase Utley. Jayson Werth is first in Phillies history with 11. This postseason, Harper is slashing .409/.567/.955 in 30 plate appearances with four homers, seven RBI, nine runs scored and eight walks.
Nick Castellanos clubbed a solo homer in the 2nd inning, his fifth home run in his last three games. The only other player in postseason history to hit five home runs over a three-game span within a single Postseason was Reggie Jackson, who did so across Games 4-6 of the 1977 World Series. Castellanos has now homered in three straight games (Games 3 & 4 of the NLDS).
The Phillies have now hit 12 in their last three games, most in a three-game span by any team in postseason history. The previous mark of 11 was held by the 2020 Yankees who did it in Games 1 & 2 of the ALWC and Game 1 of the ALDS. Through seven games this postseason, the Phils have hit 16 homers, tied for third most in the first seven-games of a single postseason with the 2021 Red Sox. Only the 2020 Yankees (17) have more.
It’s right-hander Aaron Nola on the mound. Nola recorded nine strikeouts and yielded two runs over 5 2/3 innings last Wednesday in a win over the Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS. Nola generated a staggering 16 swinging strikes and finished with a solid 34 percent CSW in one of his strongest postseason outings of his career. He wriggled out of a potential first-inning jam by striking out Marcell Ozuna on a 95 mph heater. He gave up a third-inning RBI single to Ozzie Albies, but managed to escape without any further damage. Nola kept the Braves off the scoreboard until after his sixth-inning departure when reliever Matt Strahm allowed an inherited runner to cross the plate.
He is 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last four starts, which includes his first two starts of the postseason. Nola has faced the D-backs only five times in his career, and only once in each of the past three seasons. He is 2-2 with a 7.67 ERA in those five starts.
