Bet On NBA: Detroit Pistons Analysis

The Pistons had a two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday in a 121-113 loss at a good Orlando team. Losing for only the second time in their last nine road games, the Pistons held the Magic to 18 points in the first quarter before fouls took their toll. The Magic shot 23 free throws in the first half, 38 in the game, and three Pistons finished the game with five fouls each.

J.B. Bickerstaff

Detroit coach Bickerstaff was ejected with 6:01 left in the fourth quarter after getting two straight technicals. Bickerstaff was seen seemingly yelling, “Hey f–k you!” at the referee who gave him his second T and then “F–k yourself too!” at another referee. Bickerstaff said neither he nor his team handled their emotions well enough.

“When we had momentum, we went outside ourselves. Games against teams like this are going to be physical … just making sure we maintain the physicality and not let officials become part of the game,” he said.

Cade Cunningham

Star Cunningham had 35 points, 11 assists and five rebounds, but no other Piston would even reach 20 points. Cunningham ranks third in the NBA with 9.4 assists per game, third with 20 points/assist double-doubles, and second with 27 games of 20-5-5. Cunningham is currently orchestrating the 19th season in NBA history with 24.0 PTS, 9.0 AST and 6.0 REB per game.

Malik Beasley

Beasley had 18 points and five rebounds. Beasley came off the bench as usual Saturday, but with the Pistons in comeback mode against the Magic, he played 30 minutes. He leads the league with nine games this season with at least six 3-pointers made and is on pace for 302 in 2020-21), which would break Saddiq Bey’s franchise record of 211 from 2021-22 and would be the 7th-most in NBA history.

Tim Hardaway Jr.

Hardaway Jr. had 13 points and connected on multiple three-pointers for the eighth time in the past nine games. After a slow start to his season, Hardaway has found his range of late, averaging 12.9 points and 2.9 three-pointers in 30.0 minutes per game over the past month.

Tobais Harris

Starting forward Harris suffered a head injury early in the third quarter and was replaced by Beasley at the 10:12 mark, with Harris unable to return to the game. He finished with two points, seven rebounds and two assists over 17 minutes. Beasley and Ausar Thompson would see increased playing time if Harris doesn’t play Monday.

The Stats

In January, Detroit ranks third in the NBA in wins (9), 3rd in defensive rating (107.3), 3rd in opponent’s field goal percentage (46.3%) and 4th in opponent rebounds per game (41.6). The Pistons rank 3rd in the NBA with 18.2 fast points per game this season and 2nd in January with 21.3 per game. Detroit is 15-5 when shooting at least 36.0% from deep this season and has won 10 straight.

The Pistons are on pace to win approximately 29 more games than last season, which would be the largest single-season turnaround in franchise history (record is 18, accomplished three times).

Bet On NBA Cleveland Cavaliers Analysis

The Cavs lost their season-high third game in a row on Saturday, 135-131 at home to Houston – which has handed Cleveland two of the defeats in this span. On Saturday, Rockets centers Alperen Sengun and Steven Adams dominated counterparts Jarrett Allen and Tristan Thompson, combining for 40 points and 12 rebounds.

Darius Garland

After Cleveland guard Garland made two free throws to even the score with 1:51 remaining, Houston answered with a 10-2 run to seize a 134-126 lead, fueled by five points from Thompson. Cavs star Donovan Mitchell missed a wide-open, potential tying 3-pointer with 27 seconds left. He finished with 33 points and seven assists, but was 11-for-27 from the field. Mitchell has scored at least 30 points in five of his last seven outings while shooting 42.2 percent from the field, including 33.8 percent from deep.

Garland was the leading scorer for both teams Saturday, with 27 of his 39 points coming in the second half. He has scored at least 20 points and dished five assists in eight of his last nine outings. Garland and Mitchell are the only starting backcourt in the Eastern Conference (min. 20 starts together) to each be averaging 20.0+ PPG. Cleveland is 14-2 this season when Garland and Mitchell each score 20 or more points in the same game.

Darius is averaging a career-high tying 21.7 PPG and shooting a career-high in FG% (.501) and 3FG% (.431) so far this season, and averaging a career-high 3.0 3FGM per game. Mitchell is shooting a career-best .398% from the 3-point line, and his 155 made 3-pointers this season is the 4th-most in the NBA this season (3rd-most in the Eastern Conference).

Evan Mobley

Cavs power forward Mobley returned Saturday after missing four games with a right calf strain, but was ineffective throughout. He had seven points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 29 minutes. Mobley is the only player in the NBA averaging 18.0+ PPG, 8.0+ RPG, 1.00+ BPG and shooting .400+ 3FG%.

Georges Niang

Niang had a season-high 21 points in the loss and was 6-for-7 from deep. Since the New Year, Niang is shooting 24-50 (.480) from the three-point line. He is 1 of 4 players off the bench in the NBA since Jan. 1 to shoot .480+ 3FG% (min. 50 3FGA). Sixth man Caris LeVert missed his fourth in a row with a wrist injury and is day-to-day.

The Record

Cleveland boasts a league-best 36-9 record, including a stellar 21-3 at home in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. They have hit 10+ 3-pointers in a franchise-record 50 consecutive games, ranking 6th in NBA history. Additionally, Cleveland leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.22), offensive rating (121.3), and 3-point percentage (.398).

Bet On NBA Cavaliers vs. Pistons Season Series

Somehow, the division rivals have played only once this season and not since Oct. 25 when the Cavs won 113-101 at home. Donovan Mitchell and Dean Wade scored 19 points apiece, and Jarrett Allen added 17 and 11 rebounds as the Cavs won their 10th straight over the Pistons. Cade Cunningham scored 33 and Jaden Ivey 22 for Detroit. Cleveland has won the past six at home in the series, with the last loss in January 2020.
