Indiana Pacers Analysis

All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton missed Tuesday’s 127-117 loss to Cleveland that snapped Indiana’s six-game win streak due to a mild groin strain. After trailing by a point at halftime, the Cavs made seven 3-pointers in the third quarter to lead by 11 going into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the Pacers played scrappy but ultimately never led.

Indiana lost the rebounding margin 49-37, including 14-9 on the offensive boards. The Cavs made 26 of 31 free throws while the Pacers finished 17-for-22 from the stripe.

Rick Carlisle

“In the end, the free throw differential and the rebounding differential was probably a major part of the difference. There were a few times we didn’t get organized quickly enough in transition,” Coach Carlisle said. “They were much more aggressive. They made the adjustments they had to make. The number one thing was their physical aggression, and that showed up with the boards and them getting to the free throw line.”

Tyrese Haliburton

Tuesday’s game was the first full game the Pacers haven’t had Haliburton on the floor this season. Carlisle said Haliburton would be “day-to-day.” It is not a hamstring injury for Haliburton, as initially believed. That’s worth noting, since Haliburton battled hamstring problems last season and caused him to miss nine of 10 games in January 2024. Haliburton ranks fourth in the NBA this season in assists (8.8) and second in assists-per-turnover ratio at 4.84.

Ben Sheppard

Second-year guard Sheppard started in Haliburton’s place, with Andrew Nembhard moving to the point with the first five. Nembhard had 10 points and a season -high nine assists. T.J. McConnell also got more minutes off the bench and had 10 points and eight assists. Guard Bennedict Mathurin was ejected after getting a second technical Tuesday but won’t face suspension.

Pascal Siakam

Siakam was the team’s best player in Tuesday’s loss with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He posted 21 of his 23 points in the first half, during which he shot 9-for-11 from the field. However, Siakam was silent from the offensive end in the second half, as he posted two points while putting up only five shots. Siakam has scored at least 18 points in each of his last five outings, though he has yet to score 30-plus over 41 regular-season appearances.

Even when they fell to 10-15 on the season, the Pacers continued to lean on Siakam and have gone 12-4 since. He’s working on being a more vocal leader and hasn’t been listed on the injury report once this season.

“I put a lot of work into my craft,” Siakam said. “I think every single night, I’m ready. I’m ready however the ball is gonna go. There’s going to be times when you might get more opportunities than others. It’s just all about preparation. For me, I prepare every single day for these moments. Every single night I’m out there, I want to be a threat on all three levels. I want to do it consistently every single night.”

The Record

Over their last 16 games (Since Dec. 13), the Pacers have posted a 12-4 record and have outscored teams by 6.7 points while limiting opponents to 110.6 points per game (allowed 118.2 points per game over their first 25 games during a 10-15 start). After beginning the season 2-11 away from Gainbridge Fieldhouse this season, the Pacers have won nine of their last 10 road games, winning their last four plus five straight road contests from Dec. 6-23. The Pacers have averaged 118.3 points and outscored their opponents by 7.9 points per game over the last 10 road games.

Detroit Pistons Analysis

Detroit’s 7-1 record in January, capped by Monday’s impressive 124-119 victory at the Knicks, is one win away from matching their most in a month since March 2019 — and that came last November, when Detroit was 8-9. During this month, the Pistons are eighth in deflections, tied for second in charges drawn (7) and tied for 13th in loose balls recovered.

Cade Cunningham

Cunningham is averaging 26.5 points on 50% shooting and 8.3 assists in January, continuing his push for a first All-Star appearance, while Malik Beasley’s 15.8 PPG has helped the Pistons overcome the loss of starting guard Jaden Ivey to a fibula fracture.

Cunningham was terrific on Monday with 36 points and four assists. The former No. 1 overall pick only seven points across 14 minutes in the first half after picking up four personal fouls, though he torched the Knicks in the third quarter for 18 points while shooting 7-for-10 from the field.

Cunningham has logged 30-plus points in four of his last six appearances. He is establishing himself as a bona fide star and has a chance to start the All-Star Game just a year after the Pistons lost an NBA-record 28 consecutive games. Cunningham averages 9.4 assists per game, third in the league. That would be the best average by a Detroit player since Isiah Thomas recorded 10.0 in 1986-97. Cunnigham owns three of the seven 15-assist triple-doubles in franchise history, all of which have come this season. He is 2nd in the NBA with 17 points/assist double-doubles this season.

J.B. Bickerstaff

“Our job is to put him in position to be successful. And then he’s got to go out there and do it,” head coach Bickerstaff said. “Over these 40 games now, he and I and his teammates have learned a lot about each other and how we can best help each other. And that’s what it’s about — each of us playing our role and doing what we’re supposed to do together and collectively to just help one another, make this team as good as we possibly can. Cade knows his role and what this team needs, and he’s executed perfectly.”

Malik Beasley

Beasley accumulated 22 points off the bench in just 18 minutes and has racked up 17 outings with 20-plus points over 40 regular-season appearances thus far. Beasley will have a bigger offensive role as long as Ivey is out. His 151 3-pointers are second in the NBA and the most through 20 team games in franchise history. Beasley is tied for the league lead with eight games this season with at least six 3-pointers made and on pace for 304 makes overall, which would be a Pistons all-time single-season record (211, Saddiq Bey, 2020-21) and the 7th-most in NBA history.

Ausar Thompson

The Pistons have averaged 17.1% more 3-point attempts and 23.5% more triples made per game than last season. Thompson added 11 points and seven rebounds against the Knicks. Since shifting to Detroit’s starting lineup Jan. 4 due to Ivey’s potentially season-ending lower leg injury, Thompson is averaging 9.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.3 assists in the past four. In January, he’s second in the NBA in total steals.

Detroit is on pace for a franchise-record 28-win improvement in 2024-25. During this current 10-2 run, the Pistons are allowing 39.5 rebounds per game, fewest in the league Detroit has only been bested on the boards three times during this stretch. The Pistons have held their opponents under 40 rebounds in six of the past 12 outings.

Pacers vs Pistons Season Series

The teams have split two meetings. They last met on Nov. 29 and Detroit was a 130-106 upset winner in Indianapolis behind 24 points and 11 rebounds from Cade Cunningham and 23 points from Jaden Ivey, who is currently out injured. Ivey made 3s on back-to-back possessions to start a 22-11 spurt as the Pistons built an 85-64 lead with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter. The Pistons shot 57.8% (48 of 83) from the field, including 47.4% (18 of 38) on 3-pointers. Pascal Siakam scored 21 points for the Pacers. They lead the all-time series 112-103 and have won their past three in Detroit.

Why Bet on Indiana?

The Pacers met the Lakers for the NBA Cup on Saturday night in Las Vegas – the only game of the In-Season Tournament that doesn’t count toward the regular season – and lost 123-109 to see an overall three-game winning streak end but Indiana was a big winner from that tournament as it generated a lot of national buzz behind star Tyrese Haliburton. He finished with 20 points and 11 assists in Saturday’s loss.

“I think last year we snuck up on teams, teams didn’t really know what to expect,” said Haliburton. “But I think now when you play the Pacers you know what to expect. … Obviously, people didn’t expect us to get here, the championship game, but I think teams are prepared for us.”

While he didn’t do it Saturday, Haliburton is the first player in NBA history to record multiple games with 25+ points, 15+ assists and zero turnovers, and has done so three times this season. Indiana gets back to the regular season with the league’s No. 1 offense, which is averaging 128.4 points, led by Haliburton who is averaging 26.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and a league-high 12.1 assists. In seven tournament games, he led all players who made it to the final with an average of 26.7 points per game on 52.4% shooting, and had 13.3 assists per contest.

Bennedict Mathurin had 20 points off the bench in Saturday’s loss. The former first-round pick has been far more consistent since returning to a bench role of late, averaging 13.7 points per game and shooting 46.2 percent from the field since being removed from the first unit. He was averaging 13.0 points and shooting 41.9 percent from the field as a starter. Another key reserve, guard Andrew Nembhard, missed Saturday with a knee injury and will be re-evaluated in one week. T.J. McConnell is expected to pick up some minutes in the meantime.

The Pacers currently have eight players who are averaging 10 or more points per game and have received key contributions off the bench from several players all season. The Pacers are 10-2 this season when six or more players score in double figures. Jalen Smith has scored in double figures in seven of his 14 appearances off the bench this season for an average of 10.0 points per game. He is shooting 70.7 percent from the field this season, and ranks 10th among all reserves in the NBA with an average of 5.5 rebounds per game off the bench. However, Smith is out injured and not back Monday.

Buddy Hield ranks 18th in the NBA in 3-pointers made this season. He finished with 24 points and tied a franchise record for the most 3-pointers attempted without a miss as he shot 6-for-6 from 3-point range at Atlanta, 11/21. McConnell ranks ninth in the NBA with an assists-per-turnover ratio of 4.21. After leading the NBA in bench scoring last season, the Pacers’ bench currently ranks among league leaders in several categories.

The Pacers have reached 140 or more points four times this season, which is already the most games with 140+ in one season in franchise history (passing the previous high mark of three during the 2020-21 season).

Why Bet on Detroit?

The Pistons lost their franchise-record 19th straight game Friday, 123-91 in Orlando. Former No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham finished with 21 points, six assists and three rebounds. Cunningham led all Pistons in scoring and assists while finishing as the lone player on his team with 20 or more points in a losing effort. Cunningham has surpassed the 20-point mark in 15 outings this year.

Guard Joe Harris missed his lone field-goal attempt and recorded a blocked shot in four minutes of action in a return from injury. Harris checked into the game with 3:34 left in the first period and stayed in the game for the remainder of the quarter, but he didn’t see any action thereafter. The fact that the game turned into a blowout in the second half may have prompted head coach Monty Williams to stay away from Harris, but the 32-year-old doesn’t look as though he’ll be in store for a major role in any case even though he’s now made his way back from the right shoulder strain that had sidelined him for the previous 14 games.

Power forward Marvin Bagley was unable to return to Friday’s loss after developing back spasms. He finished with nine points, five rebounds and four turnovers in 23 minutes. Bagley drew the start at center in place of Jalen Duren (ankle) on Friday, with Duren out a couple of weeks, but he failed to make the most of it.

If Bagley is unable to play Monday against the Pacers, the Pistons could turn to James Wiseman as their starting center or push Isaiah Stewart over from power forward to center. Duren ranks 6th in the NBA with 10.9 rebounds per game and ninth with 3.4 offensive rebounds per. He had the third-most rebounds (748) and fourth-most double-doubles (29) by any Piston through 81 games with the franchise in the past 50 seasons.

The Pistons have been anchored defensively by Stewart and Duren, who rank 2nd and 7th in the NBA with a .408 and .415 defended field goal percentage, respectively (min. 10 FG defended per game). Detroit has contested 51.9 shots per game, 2nd-most in the league.

This team made Williams the highest-paid coach in history this offseason just to get him to Detroit. The Pistons are 2-20, with the losing streak the longest in one season in franchise history and second-longest overall behind a 21-game slide at the end of the 1979-80 season and the start of 1980-81.

The streak is the longest in the NBA since Houston lost 20 straight in 2020-21. The Philadelphia 76ers hold both NBA records, setting the single-season mark at 26 in a row in 2013-14 and the overall mark at 28 at the end of 2014-15 and start of 2015-16. The Pistons are the first team to lose 20 of their first 22 games of a season since those 2015-16 76ers. Detroit is also the fifth team since 2000 to lose 20 of its first 22 games in a season with a point differential per game of minus-10.0 or worse.
