With the dynamic offensive duo of quarterback Joe Burrow and receiver Ja’Marr Chase likely in place for the rest of the decade, it’s probably only a matter of time before the Cincinnati Bengals win their first Super Bowl – maybe this year. Check out an in-depth look at Cincinnati’s offense this season as well as how their offense may affect NFL betting odds

Cincinnati only played 16 regular-season games in 2023 because its Week 17 matchup in Buffalo was postponed and not rescheduled after Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during that Week 17 game. Cincy then beat Baltimore 27-16 in Week 18 to finish 12-4 and win the AFC North.
In the wild card round, the Bengals played the Ravens again in Cincinnati and won 24-17. Sam Hubbard returned Tyler Huntley’s fumble 98 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown in the fourth quarter. The next week, Cincinnati was a 27-10 upset winner in Buffalo behind two TD passes from Joe Burrow, who outplayed Josh Allen. Burrow completed his first nine passes for 105 yards as Cincinnati raced to a 14-0 lead after its first two possessions.
The Bengals reached the AFC title game for the second straight season for the first time ever but this time lost in Kansas City 23-20 on a last-second field goal. Burrow, who was sacked five times and wobbly by the end, finished with 270 yards passing to go with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Bengals.
Cincinnati is planning to extend Burrow before the season if possible – let the bidding start at $50 million per season and that’s probably low considering Jalen Hurts got an extension this summer worth $51 million per year and Lamar Jackson then got $52 million per. Last year, Burrow ranked in the NFL in passing touchdowns (35), while ranking fifth in completions (414), fifth in passing yards (4,475) and sixth in passer rating (100.8). Over the last two seasons, Burrow leads the NFL in passer rating (104.8) and his third in the NFL in touchdown passes (69).
There was chatter this offseason that the Bengals might cut former Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon but he’s still on the roster. Mixon is set to make more than $10 million this season and has a $12.8 million cap hit. The team likely still will approach him about a reworked deal. Mixon had his best season in 2021 when he ran for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns. Last season he finished with 814 yards, seven touchdowns and a career-high 60 receptions.
Cincinnati might have drafted its future No. 1 tailback in Chase Brown in the fifth round out of Illinois. He was a Doak Walker Award finalist last year who rushed for 1,643 yards and 13 total touchdowns in 2022. Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said Brown is capable of making defenders miss and break off long runs, two traits the offense lacked last season.
Burrow might have the best trio of wide receivers in the NFL in Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd, although this might be Higgins’ final season with the team ahead of free agency. The Bengals likely can’t afford to keep him while also extending Burrow and Chase – of course, both starred together collegiately at LSU. The fifth overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft again was brilliant in his second NFL campaign, needing only 12 games to rack up 1,046 yards and nine TDs in the regular season before adding 220 yards and two more scores in three playoff games.
The Bengals were 3-1 when they missed Chase for four games with a hip injury last year. They were 1-2 in the three games Higgins missed. When Chase was out, Higgins’ yards per route run was 2.46, tying him for fourth best in the NFL with Jaylen Waddle.
Pro Football Focus ranks Cincinnati’s offensive line as the No. 17 unit in the league entering 2023. That was the lowest rating for any AFC North offensive line, despite upgrading at left tackle with Orlando Brown Jr. in free agency. He has an overall PFF grade of at least 68.6 in every season of his career. Jonah Williams had a rough year at left tackle in 2023 but will try to rebuild his reputation in a contract year on the right side. The interior three starters — Cordell Volson, Ted Karras and Alex Cappa — all return.
Cincinnati is a 2.5-point favorite for Week 1 in Cleveland. Burrow has won everywhere in Ohio but Cleveland, where he’s 0-2. It’s his first road Opening Day start as the Bengals try to win three straight openers. For the fourth time the Bengals open a season at their in-state rival. The last two times they won (2005 and 2011) and went to the playoffs.
