The Buffalo Bills suffered the biggest upset loss of the 2021 NFL season last week in Jacksonville, but they are still massive favorites this week on the NFL odds at another bad team, the New York Jets.

Buffalo won both meetings in 2020 vs. New York. The game at the Jets was 18-10. Tyler Bass tied a franchise record with six field goals for the Bills. The Bills fell behind 10-0 early and couldn’t finish in the red zone, finishing 0 for 5 inside the 20. The victory was their first without getting a touchdown since they beat Washington 17-16 in 2007 on a safety and five field goals by Rian Lindell. It was also the first time the Jets lost without giving up a touchdown since a 9-6 loss to the Rams in 2016.
Why Bet on Buffalo?
The Bills were 15-point favorites in Jacksonville and lost 9-6 last Sunday. Of course, Buffalo has a star QB named Josh Allen, but the Jaguars have a star linebacker name Josh Allen, and he was awesome by intercepting a pass, making a sack and recovering a fumble. Allen and fellow pass rushers Dawuane Smoot and Taven Bryan harassed Buffalo’s Allen all day and caused three second-half turnovers.
The Bills’ Allen completed 31-of-47 attempts for 264 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions, adding 50 rushing yards and losing a fumble on five carries. He mostly moved the ball on check-downs and scrambles, struggling to connect with Stefon Diggs for most of the game, including on the Bills’ final 4th-and-16 attempt.
The loss was an outlier for a Bills offense that had not been held to single-digit points since Week 17 of 2019 – a loss to the Jets in which Coach Sean McDermott elected to rest starters with playoff position secured. The previous instance was a loss to Chicago during Week 9 of 2018. The Bills entered that game having converted 20-plus first downs in 23 straight games, the longest such stretch in the NFL since the New England had 24 such games from 2016 to 2017. It was by far the longest such streak in franchise history, eclipsing the previous record of 10 games set by the 1991 Bills.
McDermott ensured that “adjustments are being made” to the team’s offense. Josh Allen’s 319 rushing yards have accounted for 33% of the team’s total through eight games this year.
“I thought we’d be further along,” McDermott said on the team’s non-existent rushing attack. “I thought that we would have progressed in that area. It is something that we need to do and do better if we want to be the team that we’re trying to become. Complementary football, you stay on one side of the ball, the run, stopping the run helps to stop the pass. It just all fits together and has to work together. You’ve got to play a certain way in this league. And that’s how we have to play. I can promise you that adjustments are being made.”
Top tight end Dawson Knox missed the game but should be back. He has been out since breaking his hand in Buffalo’s Week 6 loss to the Titans. This Bills offense has been missing Knox, as he has established himself as one of Josh Allen’s favorite weapons. Right tackle Spencer Brown also should return. Brown had started three straight games at right tackle before hurting his back and missing two games.
Why Bet on NY Jets?
New York (2-6) lost 45-30 last Thursday at Indianapolis. The Jets allowed 260 yards rushing. Jets starting QB Mike White left in the first quarter after he said two fingers on his right hand went numb — just four days after he threw for 405 yards and three TDs in his first NFL start. White said he couldn’t grip the ball and watched the final three quarters from the sideline after throwing a 19-yard TD pass to Elijah Moore that made it 7-7.
With a choice between White and highly touted rookie Zach Wilson, who is returning from a knee injury, coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday that White will start against the Bills. The former practice-squad quarterback, in his first NFL start, passed for those 405 yards and set a league record for completions (37) by a first-time starter, lifting the Jets to a come-from-behind upset over the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 31.
In the first six games, the Jets averaged 28.1 seconds in time of possession per play (15th). With White and third-stringer Johnson, who replaced White last week, they have cut it to 25.8 seconds (third). White has less game experience than Wilson, but he has more practical experience, having been around the league since 2018.
After averaging 13.3 points per game over the team’s first six games, the Jets offense has averaged 32 points per game the past two weeks, No. 4 in the NFL in that span. The Jets’ 997 yards of total offense in the past two games is third-most in a two-game span in franchise history and their combined 812 net passing yards against the Bengals and the Colts are the second-most in back-to-back games.
Saleh said Joe Flacco will be the Jets’ backup quarterback this week. Johnson played well in relief of White in Week 9, throwing for 317 yards and three scores. However, if they bring him up from the practice squad again, he’ll be added to the 53-man roster, forcing the Jets to spend four spots on quarterbacks.
Top wideout Corey Davis is cleared to return after missing 2 games with a hip injury. White has had no completions longer than 26 yards, and the Bills defense leads the NFL in fewest completions of 20-plus yards. But Davis has gotten loose for a Jets-leading seven 20-plus catches and has also forced opponents into 3 pass interference penalties.
