2022 NFL Preseason Week 1

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 13 – Sunday, Aug. 14

Carolina Panthers at Washington Commanders -3 | Saturday, Aug. 13

On paper, Washington looks tough to beat. The Commanders have home field and should be okay if backup Taylor Heinicke plays. If he doesn’t and rookie Sam Howell takes the most snaps, the Panthers will have the edge.

The Panthers may win this even if Heinicke steps under center. Carolina must play Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield because Matt Ruhle hasn’t decided on this season’s starting quarterback. Mayfield should dominate a Commanders’ defense likely to rest the big boys on the line.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Carolina Panthers

Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills -2.5 | Saturday, Aug. 13

The Bills have a solid bench, which is why even though this is a preseason game, Buffalo is at -2.5. Rookie running back James Cook, back-up wide receiver Jamison Crowder, and back up tight-end O.J. Howard are all talented enough to put points on the board.

The Colts likely won’t play Matt Ryan or Jonathan Taylor. Back up quarterback Nick Foles won a Super Bowl, though. So Indianapolis gets the moneyline nod.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Indianapolis Colts

Miami Dolphins -2.5 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Saturday, Aug. 13

How deep is Miami’s offense? Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and running backs Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel are former starters. Bridgewater, especially, should have a fun time playing against Tampa’s second unit defense.

The Buccaneers weren’t going to play Tom Brady, anyhow. But his absence could affect the team’s morale. In any case, the Fins get it done against the spread.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Miami Dolphins

Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos -2.5 | Saturday, Aug. 13

The Broncos have enough talent to win the Super Bowl, but it’s difficult to understand why they’re favored in this game. Denver doesn’t have a deep bench and second string running back Melvin Gordon III won’t play.

Neither will Russell Wilson. So in a quarterback duel between the Broncos’ Josh Johnson and Brett Rypien and the Cowboys’ Cooper Rush and Will Grier, the Boys win.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Dallas Cowboys

Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Chargers -3 | Saturday, Aug. 13

After Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ depth at quarterback is stagnant. John Wolford has some experience, but he won’t lead the Rams to a win on Saturday.

Chargers backup signal-caller Chase Daniel has a ton of experience throwing for quality franchises. The now 35-year-old has played at Kansas City and New Orleans. Daniels should have his way versus a Rams’ defense with a weak bench.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Los Angeles Chargers

Minnesota Vikings at Las Vegas Raiders -2.5 | Sunday, August 14

The Vikings’ first stringers likely won’t play. The Raiders’ first teams might because this is Las Vegas’ second preseason game. Also, Josh McDaniels let it be known that he wants to use the preseason to get everyone on the same page.

So expect the Raiders’ offense to click from the first series. The -2.5 makes Vegas an overlay.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick: Las Vegas Raiders
