More times than not, it seems like the Super Bowl is a low-scoring defensive battle. The average number of points scored in a Super Bowl is 46 points. Recently, as the game has become more offensive-friendly, we’ve seen more points being scored in the big game. Let’s take a look at some of the highest-scoring Super Bowls in the history of the NFL so you can keep betting against the Super Bowl odds.
Betting Analysis of the Highest Scoring Super Bowl Games
Super Bowl XXIX – 75 Total Points Scored
In the 1995 Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers met the San Francisco 49ers. This was the Niner team led by Steve Young and Jerry Rice. The Niners defeated the Chargers by a score of 49-26. San Francisco scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters for the easy victory.
Super Bowl LII – 74 Total Points Scored
The New England Patriots took on the Philadelphia Eagles in this one. The Patriots were the heavy favorites led by Tom Brady. The Eagles had made an improbable run to the Super Bowl. Quarterback Carson Wentz had gone down late in the season with a torn ACL and was replaced by Nick Foles. Foles led the Eagles to a 41-33 victory over the Patriots.
Super Bowl XXVII – 69 Total Points Scored
In 1993, the Buffalo Bills took on the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas defeated the Bills 52-17 in a big blowout. Many expected that this one would be a tight game, as every time these two met, it seemed to be a very close game. While they had many high-scoring affairs, they were always very tight at the end.
Super Bowl XXXVII – 69 Total Points Scored
Jon Gruden and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers met the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders, who were favored in this one, were led by the league’s Most Valuable Player, Rich Gannon. After the score was tied at 3 at the end of the first quarter, Tampa Bay went on a big run and ended up winning the game by a score of 48-21.
Super Bowl XIII – 66 Total Points Scored
Back when many of the Super Bowls were very low-scoring defensive battles, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys got into an offensive slugfest. At the end of the day, the Steelers defeated the Cowboys by a score of 35-31. Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw was named MVP of this one.
Super Bowl XXIV – 65 Total Points Scored
The Denver Broncos came into this one as a 12-point underdog. Unfortunately for them, the oddsmakers were right, as the Broncos gave up the most points in Super Bowl history in their 55-10 loss. They had to play the San Francisco 49ers, who were led by the Joe Montana-Jerry Rice combination. John Elway didn’t have any success in the Super Bowl until late in his career.
Super Bowl XLVII – 65 Total Points Scored
Joe Flacco and his Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 35-31. In the battle of the two Harbaugh Brothers, this game is remembered for the lights going out in the Superdome, halting the Niners’ momentum.
