With the two big ATP Masters 1000 hard court events of the spring in the rearview mirror, the men’s tour slows down just a bit this week. On the American schedule is the ATP 250 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. men’s Clay Court Championship at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas. This event is the only U.S.-based event on the ATP tour to be played on clay surface.
Of the 28 players in the field, 10 are Americans. Six of the top eight seeds are American as well, including No. 1 Frances Tiafoe, No. 2 Tommy Paul, No. 3 Brandon Nakashima, and No. 4 John Isner, who all have first-round byes.
Last year’s winner, Reilly Opelka, is injured and not in the 2023 field. Isner lost the final to Opelka last year and won the title in 2013, also losing the 2012 final. Jack Sock, the 2015 champion, is in the field as a wild card entry, while past winners Steve Johnson, Cristian Garin, and Fernando Verdasco are also in the draw.
Let’s take a look at the ATP odds for the Fayez Sarofim & Co. and some of the first-round odds at MyBookie.

Tiafoe, Paul Top Ranked Players
Tiafoe and Paul are not only the top two seeds, but they are also the only top 20 players in the World Rankings at the Houston event. Tiafoe is ranked No. 14 in the world, while Paul is No. 19.
Tiafoe is 15-5 on the season, and two of his losses have come to players ranked in the top 10. This will be his first clay-court event of 2023, and Tiafoe is 21-30 on clay in his career. He lost in the second round in Miami last week after reaching the semifinals at Indian Wells and the quarters in both Acapulco and Dallas.
Paul is 16-6 on the season with three losses to Top 10 players. He also hasn’t played on clay this year and has a 13-18 career record on the surface. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 at Miami and reached the finals in Acapulco, losing to Alex de Minaur.

First Round Matches to Bet
The odds for Monday’s first-round matches are up at MyBookie. Among those to take a look at are American J.J. Wolf at -140 against Australian Jordan Thompson. Wolf beat Thompson in four sets in the first round of the Australian Open and has gone deep in multiple tournaments so far this year.
Wolf will have the crowd behind him on Monday, and as the No. 5 seed, the draw sets up for him to face Paul in the quarterfinals.
Another first-round match to watch is former Houston champion Cristian Garin (-163) against Hugo Dellien (+142). Garin has three match wins on clay this year and a career record of 70-45 on the surface. Overall in 2023, he is 8-7, and he won two matches in Miami before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 3 seed.
Dellien is 5-4 this season in official ATP matches, with a 5-3 mark on clay. He reached the semifinals in South America earlier this season but is ranked 117th on the season and shouldn’t compete with Garin.
Garin has had success at this event and is an accomplished clay court player. All five of his career titles are on clay court surfaces, and the draw is in his favor at Houston if he wins the opening match.
