These players were seeded based on their ATP rankings at the time of the tournament.

The ATP European Open is a relatively new 250 level event that takes place in Antwerp, Belgium. It was first held in 2016 and takes place on indoor hard courts from October 16-22. It’s one of three ATP events this week, along with the Japan Open and BNP Paribas Open.

The 28-player draw includes four of the top 50 players in the world, all of whom receive a bye into the second round.

French players have won three of seven times in Antwerp. Richard Gasquet won the inaugural event in 2016, and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga won in 2017. Ugo Humbert defeated Alex de Minaur in the 2020 finals.

Diego Schwartzman is a three-time runner-up, and Felix Auger-Aliassime is the defending champion, although he opted to compete in Tokyo at the Japan Open this week. 

ATP European Open Top Seeds

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the No. 1 seed in Antwerp, and the only player ranked inside the top-25 in the world. Tsitsipas is coming off of a disappointing Round of 32 exit at the Shanghai Masters, where he lost in three sets to Humbert.

Before that, he lost in the Round of 32 to Nicolas Jarry at the China Open and hasn’t fared well since winning the Los Cabos Open in early August. In fact, he hasn’t won consecutive matches since then. 

Along with Tsitsipas, Jan-Lennard Struff, Alexander Bublik, and Arthur Fils receive byes into the second round. Fils has probably been the most consistent of the group.

The 19-year-old French player reached the Round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters, scoring wins over Pavel Kotov and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and is 16-14 this season. He recently moved up six spots in the world rankings to No. 38.

Best European Open Bets

Fabian Marozsan (-375) vs. JP Varillas (+230)

Fabian Marozsan improved to a career-best No. 65 in the world rankings following a quarter-final appearance at the Shanghai Masters last week.

The 24-year-old Hungarian player won four matches in the tournament, beating Casper Ruud, Dusan Lajovic, Alex de Minaur, and Arthur Rinderknech. JP Varillas, meanwhile, has lost three consecutive matches dating back to the Round of 16 at the Chengdu Open.

Marozsan and Varillas have yet to play each other on the ATP Tour. Marozsan is 42-24 this season, including 9-9 on hard courts. Varillas is 23-25 and just 4-8 on hard courts.

Luca Nardi (+125) vs. Dominic Thiem (-175)

Veteran Dominic Thiem is favored in his first-round match against 20-year-old Italian Luca Nardi. This is the first match between the two players.

Thiem is a disappointing 16-20 this season and is coming off of a Round of 16 exit at the Bratislava Open. He’s 3-2 in his last five matches. Nardi is just 4-5 in ATP events this season but reached the semi-finals at the Bratislava Open.

He’s a great upset candidate and could make a decent run with a first-round victory over Thiem.

Roberto Bautista-Agut vs Marton Fucsovics

When: Thursday, October 21 – 14:30 CEST

Roberto Bautista-Agut (-185) has had a strong start to the year, making two finals in Qatar and Montpelier, but unfortunately lost both bouts. Still, he would go on to reach the semi-finals of the Miami Masters and has later added a QF finish in Toronto.

Of late, Bautista-Agut hasn’t had that much success, crashing out of the Cincinnati Masters in R1 and 2021 U.S. Open in R3. Last week, he also attended Indian Wells, where he made it past Guido Pella in R1 but then lost to the eventual champions, Cameron Norrie.

Marton Fucsovics’ (+139) performances were very similar to his next opponent’s since he also enjoyed far more success earlier into the season. Fucsovics has made it to the finals in Rotterdam and later added QF finish at Wimbledon – marking his career-best Grand Slam placement.

In Belgium, Fucsovics made it past Dennis Novak in straight sets, and while it wasn’t the cleanest game, Fucsovics has shown a lot of quality.

This is a match between two excellent players and players who were in much better earlier this year. Picking the side isn’t easy, but at the same time, it’s hard to doubt the higher-rated Bautista-Agut, who has also won his last meeting with Fucsovics.

Andy Murray vs Diego Schwartzman

When: Thursday, October 21 – 18:30 CEST

Former no.1, Andy Murray (-133) recently crashed out of Cincinnati against Wimbledon semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz and later added another R2 exit in Winston Salem. He hadn’t had much more success at the 2021 U.S. Open, where Murray fell short against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round.

On a more positive note, Murray looked good at Indian Wells, where he looked poised for a strong finish before he had to admit defeat to the current no.5, Alexander Zverev. The Brit also played well in the 2021 European Open opening round, where he beat Frances Tiafoe in 3:45 hours, proving that, despite his age, he still has a lot left in the tank.

Diego Schwartzman (+101) has had a mixed season, with both disappointing performances and occasional moments of greatness. He won a title in Buenos Aires and made it to QF at Roland Garros, where he won the first set against Rafael Nadal before admitting defeat 1-3.

Despite his occasional moments of brilliance, Schwartzman did not impress of late, most notably in Toronto, where he seemed like he lacked confidence. That was again very evident in his loss to Botik Van De Zandschulp at the 2021 U.S. Open Round of 16.

Even though Schwartzman is a decent hard-court player, his only title on this surface came at Los Cabos 2019. His other three tournament titles all came on clay.

There is no denying that this will be an exciting match, and surprisingly, it will also be the first time Murray and Schwartzman will meet. Again you could question Murray and whether he is fit enough to take on Schwartzman after his long fight with Tiafoe; however, he has definitely shown enough for us to feel confident about the Brit.

It could be a close one, but we prefer Murray to win in three sets.

Brandon Nakashima vs Henri Laaksonen

When: Thursday, October 21 – 20:00 CEST

Brandon Nakashima (-232) broke into the top 100 for the first time this year and made two consecutive finals in Washington and Los Cabos in July. Now, he needs only a couple more solid performances to qualify for the NexGen Finals, and we can be sure he will be hungry to prove his worth.

Nakashima has made it through the qualifiers and added a massive win against the sixth-seeded Alex de Minaur in the first round. Even though his opponent hasn’t had the best performance on the day, Nakashima deserves plenty of praise for that win.

Henri Laaksonen (+171) might not be as recognized as Nakashima; however, he is the highest-rated Swiss tennis player due to Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka struggling with injuries. Like Nakashima, Laaksonen had to fight through the qualifiers where he did not disappoint.

He later added a convincing win against Benoit Paire; however, it’s worth noting that Paire could have won had he not started to struggle in the second set.

This could be a close match, but we like Nakashima better. He is higher rated, in great form, and needs to deliver in order to book a ticket for Milan next month.

Jenson Brooksby vs Botic Van De Zandschulp

When: Wednesday, October 20 – 16:00 CEST

Jenson Brooksby (-217) caused a huge upset when he won against the fifth-seeded Reilly Opelka in the first round. Although Brooksby didn’t face a single break, he broke Opelka once in each set to win the match 6-4, 6-4.

What’s more, Brooksby made just six unforced errors in the match and has been showing exceptional form throughout the qualifiers. With his win on Tuesday, Brooksby is 13-6 and is enjoying a great season.

So far in 2021, Brooksby reached the finals in Newport and a semi-final in Washington. He has also made it to the Round of 16 at the 2021 U.S. Open.

Botic Van De Zandschulp (+161) struggled a bit against Alexei Popyrin in the tournament’s first match, and while he ended up winning, Van De Zandschulp needed three sets to get the job done (6-4, 3-6, 6-0).

He will need to build on his solid start to the tournament and hope he can show the same fight on Thursday, but that might be easier said than done.

With the form Brooksby has been showing, he should seal the deal in straight sets.

Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Musetti

When: Wednesday, October 20 – 18:30 CEST

On Tuesday, Lorenzo Musetti (+409) won against his compatriot, Gianluca Mager, with 7-6, 7-6 to advance into the next round of the 2021 European Open. Unfortunately, his road to the title will likely end here, as he takes on the current world no.13, Jannik Sinner (-714).

There is always room for upsets, but it’s very easy to see why Sinner is heavily favored if you compare Musetti and Sinner. The 20-year-old rising tennis star is fresh off a Round of 16 exit at Indian Wells, which isn’t great; however, he has been phenomenal throughout the entire season.

Looking back, Sinner won the 2021 Sofia Open in October, made it to the Round of 16 at the 2021 U.S. Open, made it to the finals of the 2021 Washington Open, and has reached the fourth round in the 2021 French Open.

Admittedly, Sinner hasn’t won any big tournaments, but he has consistently delivered and even beaten some of the world’s best players. Musetti is a good player, and we expect him to put up a fight, but beating Sinner should be out of his reach.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Cristian Garin

When: Wednesday, October 20 – 20:00 CEST

Even though Cristian Garin (+155) is the higher-seeded player, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (-208) is favored to win this match, and that’s fair. The Spaniard is in excellent form, and while both like to play on clay, Davidovich Fokina has shown a lot more lately and inspires much more confidence.

You could argue that Davidovich Fokina hadn’t achieved a lot since his win at the Chile Open last year, and that’s true. His results have been very mixed since then; however, he did reach R3 at the Olympics.

What’s more, he has been very impressive in his opening European Open match against Jordan Thompson (6-3, 6-3). And if his performance against the Australian is any indication, Davidovich Fokina should be able to win with ease.

Zizou Bergs vs Lloyd George Harris

When: Tuesday, October 19 – 11:00 CEST

Zizou Bergs enters this bout as a +286 underdog, while Lloyd George Harris is priced as a -434 favorite. The offered betting odds make a lot of sense, considering Bergs is ranked as world no.186, while Harris is no.32.

Even though we shouldn’t put too much weight on the player’s ATP rankings, the skill gap between the two is quite large, and barring any upsets, Harris should come out ahead. It’s also worth noting that Harris is 3-2 across his last five; however, his only two losses over that stretch came against Ruud and Schwartzman.

Meanwhile, Bergs shares the same 3-2 record, but with losses against Laaksonen (no.99) and Moaring (no.159). Harris shouldn’t be losing games like this, and we don’t expect him to.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Jordan Thompson

When: October 19 – 11:00 CEST

Like the match between Bergs and Harris, this one promises to be very one-sided. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is expected to dominate as a -181 favorite, while Jordan Thompson (+135) will have a tough task ahead of him as he looks to upset the current world no.44.

These two tennis players last met in May 2019, when Thompson won 3-0 with 6-3, 6-2, 7-6. However, a lot has changed since, and Davidovich is now a much more experienced player. You never know what’s going to happen in these opening tournament rounds, but it’s fair to assume Davidovich should have this one in the bag.

Lorenzo Musetti vs Gianluca Mager

When: October 19 – 11:00 CEST

Lorenzo Musetti (-107) has met with Gianluca Magar (-121) twice before – in November 2019 and May 2021 – and won both bouts. The first bout ended in a 2-0 sweep, while their most recent meeting went the distance and ended in Musseti’s favor after three sets (2-1).

According to the latest tennis betting odds, their rematch will be close, and we can’t disagree. Both Musetto and Magar have been showing a similar form of late, and while Magar has won more games in his last five (2-3), that does not guarantee him success.

Jan-Lennard Struff vs Albert Ramos-Vinolas

When: October 19 – 11:00 CEST

It’s not hard to view Jan-Lennard Struff as a better player than Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and the offered betting odds would confirm that. Jan-Lennard Struff is priced as a -169 favorite, while Albert Ramos-Vinolas is priced as a +126 underdog.

Interestingly, Ramos has won two of his three head-to-head meetings with Struff (both 2-0); however, he has lost his most recent. Regardless, neither of these h2h results mean much since two happened in 2017 and one in 2013.

Struff enters this match with a poor 1-4 record in his last five, while Ramos managed to win one more (2-3). Still, Struff had to face tougher opponents and usually does well on hard courts, which is why it’s not hard to favor him.

Frances Tiafoe vs Andy Murray

When: October 19 – 11:00 CEST

It doesn’t take a genius to see that this will be a very close game, but it’s also hard not to favor the younger Frances Tiafoe. However, the bookmakers seem to disagree, having priced Tiafoe as +102 underdog and Andy Murray as -135 favorite.

In some ways, that makes sense since Murray is a more experienced player, but at the same time, his experience comes at the cost of age. And with players as old as Murray, there’s always the doubt that his body might not stand up to the test.

Murray is a more established and accomplished player, but it’s hard to doubt Tiafoe.

Jannik Sinner vs Arthur Rinderknech

When: Friday, October 22 – 16:30 CEST

Jannik Sinner is one of the main favorites to win the 2021 European Open, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he is priced as a -476 favorite for his match against Arthur Rinderknech (+313). Although a large price gap, it’s a fair one.

Sinner has been exceptional this season and has already proven his worth in this tournament. In the previous round, the Italian has made easy work of his compatriot, Lorenzo Musetti (2-0), and is now 8-2 across his last ten outings.

The only two losses over that stretch came against Tayloe Fritz (0-2) in the 1/8 finals of Indian Wells and current no.4, Aleksander Zverev (0-3) in the 1/8 finals of the 2021 U.S. Open.

Rinderknecht, meanwhile, is 6-4 across his last 10, with losses against world no.42 Carlos Alcaraz (1-3) in the 1/32 finals of the 2021 U.S. Open, world no.62 Benjamin Bonzi (1-2) in Rennes, world no.58 Marcos Giron (1-2) in Metz, and world no.188 Hugo Grenier, who upset the French 0-2 in Orleans.

Interestingly, Rinderknecht won his only meeting with Sinner (2-1) back in May in Lyon; however, despite that result, it’s hard to doubt the Italian. Sinner should get it done in straight sets. 

Brandon Nakashima vs Diego Schwartzman

When: Friday, October 22 – 18:30 CEST

Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman (-151) has had a very up-and-down season. He has had several moments of greatness but also disappointing losses, making it hard to say how good he really is. However, he has done well in Buenos Aires and France, where he has reached QF, which is worth something.

One thing to take away from Schwartzman is that he usually does well on clay; however, he is decent on hard courts as well, seeing he has reached five of his last 11 finals on this surface.

Last time out, Schwartzman won against Andy Murray (6-4, 7-6), where he has shown some good qualities; however, he also needed nearly four hours to seal the deal. Hence some fatigue is expected.

Brandon Nakashima (+114) is enjoying one of the best years of his career, having reached two finals in July at Los Cabos and in Washington. In this tournament, Nakashima already won both of his qualifiers, to which he added an R1 win against Alex de Minaur (2-0) and Henri Laaksonen (2-1).

While we have to show some respect to Nakashima and what he has achieved of late, beating Schwartzman might be a tough ask. It could be a close one, but Schwartzman should edge out a win. 

Jenson Brooksby vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

When: Friday, October 22 – 20:00 CEST

World no.44, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will clash with Jenson Brooksby in what promises to be an exciting bout. He has already won against Jordan Thompson (6-3, 6-3) and Cristian Garin (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and looks to be in great form.

In the second round of the 2021 European Open, Fokina fought back from a one-set deficit to steal the win while scoring 90 points (vs. Garin’s 82). What’s more, the Spaniard recorded two aces and committed only one double foul.

In 2021, Fokina is at 8-7 on indoor hard courts, which isn’t great; however, he has shown some great qualities in the earlier stages of this tournament.

Jenson Brooksby, ranked no.70 in the world, has made it to this stage of the tournament, having beaten Michael Gerts (6-4, 6-2), Norbert Gombos (6-4, 6-2), Reilly Opelka (6-4, 6-4) and Botic Van De Zandschulp (6-2, 6-0).

Unlike Fokina, Brooksby recorded only one ace and committed one double foul in his last game. However, he was effective with his serves and won 77% of his first serves and 74% of the second serve.

Brooksby is priced as a heavy favorite for this match (-322) against Fokina (+226), which may seem fair; however, Fokina has definitely shown enough for us to believe he can force a tight match and win at least one set.

Players to Watch Out For

Félix Auger-Aliassime

Ranked no.11 in the world, Félix Auger-Aliassime travels to Antwerp as the highest-seeded player in the field. Therefore, it shouldn’t come off as a surprise that Auger-Aliassime is expected to deliver and compete for the top spots, especially knowing how well the Canadian tennis star had dome earlier last month.

Auger-Aliassime had made it all the way to the semi-finals of the 2021 U.S. Open, adding to his previous success when he reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon. However, outside of those two Grand Slam performances, Auger-Aliassime hasn’t achieved much – particularly in recent weeks.

After crashing out of the 2021 U.S. Open, Auger-Aliassime underperformed at the Laver Cup, where he lost to Matteo Berrettini in the group stage and has recently exited the Indian Wells Masters in Round of 64.

It seems like Auger-Aliassime’s dissipating performance in the 2021 U.S. Open took a tool on his morale, effectively harming his performances on the court. He might be the highest-rated player attending the ATP 2021 European Open. But he is definitely not the most-in form player in the field.

Jannik Sinner

The rising Italian tennis star has achieved a lot in the year. While he hasn’t won a single Grand Slam tennis tournament, that doesn’t mean much, seeing how there were only two Grand Slam champions in 2021.

Still, Sinner has made it to R4 at both the 2021 French Open and the 2021 U.S. Open, which are very impressive achievements for a 20-year-old who has first appeared at a Grand Slam tennis tournament in 2019.

Outside of that, Sinner has won the 2021 Sofia Open and is through to R4 at the Indian Wells Masters. Earlier in August, the Italian has also won the Washington Open and made it to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open in April.

Even more impressive is his record on hard courts in 2021 (23/9), which shows immense growth from 2019 (2/6). And while Sinner has done better on hard courts this season, it’s not like he has ever struggled to deliver on this surface, seeing how he is at a 62.5% career win rate on hard courts.

Diego Schwartzman

Diego Schwartzman trails Sinner and Auger-Aliassime as the third-highest seeded player at 2021 European Open and world no.15. Like his main two competitors, Schwartzman has achieved plenty in 2021, including QF at the 2021 San Diego Open and R4 at the 2021 U.S. Open.

At Grand Slam tennis tournaments, Schwartzman has done exceptionally well this year, and while he wasn’t able to emulate his success from 2020 when he made it to the semi-finals of the 2020 French Open, Schwartzman has two R3 exits (Australia, Wimbledon), an R4 exit (U.S. Open), and quarter-finals appearance at the French Open, where he lost against Rafael Nadal.

Like Sinner, Schwartzman has shown solid form on hard courts this year, with 17/9. It marks his career-best record on hard courts, having averaged a rather mediocre 53.16% win rate on hard courts over his 12-year-long career.

Stefanos Tsitsipas travels to Germany with a chip on his shoulders as he tries to bounce back from a disappointing Wimbledon appearance. The 22-year-old Greek enters the 2021 Hamburg Open as the top-seeded player and will begin his campaign in the second round.

There he will clash with either one of the winners of the qualifiers or the dangerous Dominik Koepfer, who has been phenomenal on clay on the season. Tsitsipas’ most likely challenger has recently strung together a few impressive results.

That includes  R3 at Wimbledon, Round of 32 in Halle, and Stuttgart Open. Adding to that, Koepfer also reached R3 at the 2021 French Open, where he had to admit defeat to Roger Federer in a thrilling bout that saw the Swiss edge out a win with 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.

If Tsitsipas makes it past the home favorite, he is expected to clash with world no.44 Filip Krajinovic, assuming the Serb makes it this far. Krajinovic will have to make it past world no.166 Daniel Altmaier and then defeat the winner of the Jaume Munar v  Philipp Kohlschreiber clash.

Looking ahead, Tsitsipas’s road to the finals won’t be as difficult, knowing that Nikoloz Basilashvili is his potential most challenging opponent. The two would meet in the semi-finals; however, that’s under the assumption that Basilashvili makes it past Jan-Lennard Struff.

The latter has a tricky clash with Laslo Djere in the first round but should have no issues reaching the quarter-finals. There he’ll meet with Basilashvili, who he beat in straight sets in Paris Masters but has since lost twice at the Sargenda Open and the Bavarian international.

Federico Delbonis or Pablo Carreno Busta To Join Tsitsipas in the Finals

Tsitsipas is clearly the best player in the upper half and should struggle to claw his way into the finals, regardless of who he will meet in the quarters and semi-finals. In the bottom half of the tournament, however, things get a bit more interesting.

Federico Delbonis and Pablo Carreno Busta are both favored to make a deep run, but neither will have an easy road to the semis. Carreno Busta will first need to defeat Feliciano Lopez, who he has never played before. He will then take on Dusan Lajovic, Lucas Pouille, Gianluca Mager or a qualifier.

Meanwhile, Federico Delbonis will first take on a qualifier before he crosses swords with Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round. It should prove to be an exciting bout given Ramos-Vinolas’s strong form on the season, but Delbonis should be the better player on the day, having already reached R4 at Roland Garros, semi-finals of the Chile Open, and final-eight of the Italian Open.

What’s more, Delbonis is 5-2 in the head to head with Ramos-Vinolas. 

If everything goes as expected, Delbonis and Carreno Busta will clash in the semi-finals. The former should be favored to win, having already beaten the Spaniard 2-1 at Madrid Open in May.

Delbonis vs Tsitsipas Finals

Due to variance, it’s hard to predict who the final two standing players will be at  Am Rothenbaum on Sunday, July 18. However, it’s fair to assume that the Hamburg European Open title battle will come down to a clash between Delbonis and Tsitsipas.

It’s not difficult to spot which of the two will most likely win the match; however, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any solid betting opportunities to take advantage of. 

Betting on Delbonis to reach the finals is a solid bet at generous odds, and you can’t pass on Tsitsipas to claim the trophy, either. The real dreamers could also place a few bucks on Delbonis steal the title from Tsitsipas, albeit this is definitely a longshot bet, as the Argentine has a lot of hurdles to overcome to win his third career singles title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas received a wildcard to compete at the 2021 Hamburg Open last week, where he will be looking for his third clay-court title of the year. The 22-year-old has joined the field as the top-seeded player, as he attends the last clay ATP-500 event of the year.

The world no.4 has recently finished runner-up at the 2021 French Open to add yet another impressive result to his fantastic season on clay. He has previously won the Monte Carlo Masters 2021 and followed it up with a runner-up finish at the ATP-500 Barcelona Open.

In Barcelona, Tsitsipas was defeated by the “King of Clay” Rafael Nadal in a thrilling finale. His solid showings on clay extended to the 2021 Lyon Open, where Tsitsipas lifted the trophy, just a week prior to another final run in France, where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

Besides his impressive showings across the season, Tsitsipas was also runner-up at the 2020 Hamburg Open, when he lost to Andrey Rublev in three sets. Although a painful defeat, Tsitsipas has shown he is more than ready to take the title home this time around.

Pablo Carreño Busta

World no.12 led the entry list before Tsitsipas took over as the no.1 seeded player for the 2021 Hamburg Open. The 29-year-old Spaniard advanced to the semi-finals in Hamburg two years back when he fell to Andrey Rublev.

Busta travels to Germany following a first-round exit from 2021 Wimbledon, where he got outclassed by Sam Querrey in three sets (6-7, 4-6, 5-7). Although a disappointing showing from the Spaniard, he was never viewed as a strong grass player.

Instead, Busta excels on clay, where he holds an impressive 67.1% win rate and is 13-5 on the season. He had already showcased his strength on clay earlier last month when Busta reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Mallorca Open and made it to the fourth round at the 2021 French Open, where he lost to Tsitsipas (3-6, 2-6, 5-7).

Regardless of his recent record against the Greek, Busta has proven numerous times before that he is a force to be reckoned with on clay and is expected to show just that next week.

Felix Auger-Aliassime

Felix Auger-Aliassime joins the field as the third-seeded player at the 2021 Hamburg Open. The young Canadian is ranked 19th in the world and viewed as a lively outsider to win the title in Germany.

The 20-year-old travels to Hamburg following a very impressive quarter-finals appearance at 2021 Wimbledon. He ended up losing the match against Matteo Berrettini (3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 3-6).

That loss, however, doesn’t take away from Auger-Aliassime’s success against Alexander Zverev (6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4), who he beat in the round of 16.

Adding to his success in England, Auger-Aliassime has also reached the finals of MercedesCup in Stuttgart and knocked out Roger Federer in the second round of the Noventi Open. Although most of his recent success came on grass, Auger-Aliassime has proven to be an efficient player on clay throughout his career.

He holds a 66.45% win rate on the clay surface and reached R4 at the 2021 Australian Open, where he lost to Aslan Karatsev (6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 3-6, 4-6), who would then go on to reach semi-finals. If there is one player that will be motivated to impress in Hamburg, it’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Opelka took out Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 at St. Petersburg and beat, both Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cincinnati Masters.

Prediction

While Taylor Fritz owns a 2-1 edge over Reilly Opelka in head-to-head matchups, Opelka won their most recent encounter 6-3, 6-4 in Tokyo in 2019 and he’s clearly playing better than Fritz coming into this affair. I like Opelka to get it done in three sets!

Prediction

Nishikori owns a 4-1 edge in five career meetings and is the faster, younger player in this affair. Not only that, but I believe he’s hungrier as he looks to get his career and standing as a legitimate slam contender, back on track in 2021. Nishikori wins and he gets in done in straight sets!

Richard Gasquet Vs  Alex De Minaur

Now, ranked 54th in the ATP world rankings, 34-year-old Frenchman Richard Gasquet is just 6-7 on the year with no titles. More importantly, Gasquet has been bounced out of his last two events in the first round by losing to Roberto Bautista Agut in his opener in the French Open and then losing to Daniil Medvedev in his opener at St. Petersburg last week.

While world No. 29 Alex De Minaur is also just 6-7 on the year with no titles, the 21-year-old Australian did make a fantastic run in reaching the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open where he beat the likes of Gasquet (6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-5), Karen Kachanov and Vasek Pospisil before falling to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

Prediction

While Gasquet is aging and his best days are now, far behind him, the 21-year-old De Minaur is a player on the rise. With that said – and De Minaur already having won their only head-to-head meetings, De Minaur is the easy pick to get it done in this one, although it’s going to take three sets.

Struff is 12-7 on the year and comes into this event off a run to the third round at the US Open where he was dispatched by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Kachanov is 12-8 in 2020 and comes into this event off his own run to the third round where he was dispatched by Aussie Alex de Minaur!

Prediction

Kachanov won the first career meeting 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at Halle on grass in 2019 but Struff got some revenge by recording a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) win at the ATP Masters 100 in Paris on an indoor hardcourt. I’m going with the young, bigger Kachanov to get the win in this one based mostly on the fact that he’s got the bigger serve and should be able to earn a few more cheap points in this one than Struff. Kachanov’s 132-105 career mark on the ATP Tour is better than Struff’s 135-153 and his bigger weapons will help him advance in three tough sets in this one!

Daniil Medvedev Vs Ugo Humbert at 11:00 AM

22-year-old Ugo Humbert has gone 11-7 on the year with one title at Auckland in January. During that event, the world No. 42 showed he is going to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. Hubert took out world No. 13 Denis Shapovalov in the quarters before taking out world No. 20 John Isner in the semifinals. Hubert then dispatched world No. 24 Benoit Paire in the finals to earn his first ATP Tour title. However, since then, Hubert has struggled in going 6-8 in 14 matches.

24-year-old Daniil Medvedev is 15-6 on the year and although he has yet to claim a title, he did make a fantastic run to the semifinals of the recently completed US Open before falling to eventual champion and world No. 3 Dominic Thiem in three difficult sets.

Prediction
