Not all that long ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks led the NL West. However, they have fallen on very hard times since the break and are now 8.5 games behind the first-place LA Dodgers as the teams open a big series in the desert on Tuesday with LA favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?
Infielder Max Muncy returned to the starting lineup for Monday’s series finale at San Diego as the DH. Muncy had sat out each of the first three games of the series while recovering from the bruised left wrist he sustained Thursday, when he was hit by a pitch in an 8-2 win over the Athletics. Though Muncy bats from the left side of the plate, he throws with his right hand, so the injured wrist shouldn’t present too many issues for him in the field and he could be ready to return to third on Tuesday. Muncy is hitting below .200 but has 27 homers and 70 RBIs.All-Star DH JD Martinez didn’t start Monday so Muncy could play DH. Martinez is batting .269 with 25 homers and 76 RBIs and should start Tuesday. NL MVP candidate Mookie Betts hit his 30th homer on Sunday, his fourth 30-homer season. His career high is 35.
Fellow NL MVP candidate Freddie Freeman leads the Majors in doubles (40) and became the fastest Dodger in history to reach 40 doubles (107 G). He is tied for first in extra base hits (65) and ranks third in batting average (.339). Freeman and Betts are the first pair of Dodgers teammates to each have 60 extra-base hits through 110 games since Babe Herman and Johnny Frederick in 1929.
It’s lefty Julio Urias (8-6, 4.69 ERA) on the mound. Urias earned the win over Oakland last Thursday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Urias was originally slated to start last Tuesday, but the outing was pushed back due to a split nail on his pitching hand. Manager Dave Roberts indicated prior to the contest that he didn’t expect the left-handed hurler to go more than five frames, and that’s exactly how things played out with Urias departing after five innings despite having thrown just 68 pitches.
Urias will face Arizona for the 13th time in his career. He is 8-1 with a 1.55 ERA (10 ER/58.0 IP) and 53 strikeouts against 9 walks. He last faced the Diamondbacks on March 30, spinning 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs against six strikeouts, earning the win.

Why Bet on Arizona?
Arizona entered the second half of the season at 52-40 and is now 57-56 after a sixth straight loss Sunday, 5-3 at Minnesota. The team has simply fallen apart – it probably was playing over its head a bit. The Snakes led Sunday’s game 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Christian Walker solo homer in the top of the. Max Kepler led off the bottom half by hitting his third homer in three games. Jorge Polanco walked and Wallner sent a soaring drive off the facing of the right-center scoreboard off new Arizona closer Paul Sewald (3-2), who was acquired from Seattle in a trade Monday.
“With us struggling, and finally getting that chance to try and get off this losing streak and get called upon to do what I’m supposed to do and then fail miserably, it’s disappointing,” Sewald said.
NL Rookie of Year favorite Corbin Carroll was in question for Sunday but went 2-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base. Carroll was hit by a pitch on the right hand Saturday but stayed in the game, and X-rays confirmed the outfielder merely had a contusion. It was a productive day for Carroll, which included his 36th steal. It came after a stretch in which he hit .125 (4-for-32) over the previous nine games. Since 1990, Carroll is 1 of 10 MLB rookies to steal 30+ bases at age 22 or younger.
Second baseman Ketel Marte, having a really good year, was lifted from Sunday’s game with left quad tightness and might miss some time. The 29-year-old went 0-for-3 before being replaced by Geraldo Perdomo during the bottom of the fifth inning. Marte hit a grounder down the third-base line in the top of the fifth after getting jammed, and third baseman Willi Castro made a perfect throw across the diamond to get the out by a step. Marte jogged off the field gingerly.
He has been one of the most valuable position players in baseball, ranking No. 18 in the National League with 2.9 wins above replacement (FanGraphs), second on Arizona behind Carroll’s 4.1. Marte’s 97 home runs as a D-back are tied with Miguel Montero for ninth on the D-backs franchise list.
It’s young right-hander Brandon Pfaadt on the mound Tuesday. Pfaadt (0-5) took the loss last Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over seven innings in a 1-0 loss against the Giants. He struck out seven. Pfaadt turned in the best start of his career, generating 31 called plus swinging strikes on just 84 pitches. The 24-year-old rookie’s only blemish came on a LaMonte Wade, Jr. solo shot in the fourth inning; however, he didn’t receive any run support and was saddled with the loss.
In three outings since being recalled from the minors, Pfaadt has posted a 3.42 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB across 18.2 innings. The rookie has not faced the Dodgers.
