Mets on the Season

The Mets were a season-low 11 games under .500 on June 2 (24-35) but have been one of the best teams in baseball since.

First-year Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spent 15 years in the Yankees system, serving most recently as the team’s bench coach.

Last Game Review

Star shortstop Francisco Lindor entered Tuesday’s series opener having a very nice July after two solo homers and a steal in Monday’s win in Miami.

The 30-year-old registered his second multi-home run game of the season while adding his 20th stolen base for good measure.

Francisco Lindor

This month, Lindor is slashing .294/.429/.588 with six home runs, 14 RBI, 13 runs scored and five steals.

Last year he became the ninth player in franchise history to record 20+ doubles, 20+ homers and 20+ steals in a single season.

He is looking to become the fifth player in franchise history to record multiple 20/20/20 seasons joining Howard Johnson (x5, 1987-91), Darryl Strawberry (x4, 1984, 1986-88), Carlos Beltrán (x2, 2007-08) and David Wright (x2, 2006-07).

Homers

The Mets have five players who have hit 10 or more home runs this year in Pete Alonso, Lindor, J.D. Martinez, Brandon Nimmo and Mark Vientos.

Only the Padres and Orioles have more with seven players. Last year, the Mets featured eight players with 10 or more home runs, tied for the third-most in franchise history.

Nimmo moved to the No. 2 spot in the lineup for the first time on June 13 vs. Miami.

The Mets have taken off since and Nimmo is batting .288 with 27 runs, seven doubles, nine home runs, 31 RBI, 19 walks, four steals with a .390 OBP, a .560 SLG and a .950 OPS when batting second this season.

Nimmo’s nine steals already have tied a career high. Alonso’s 50 home runs against the American League are a franchise record, and the most among any player since he entered the league in 2019.

Logan Porter

On Tuesday, the Mets made a roster move in signing catcher Porter to a one-year contract.

Porter joins New York’s active roster as a backup catching option behind young stalwart Francisco Alvarez.

Logan, 29, made his big league debut last season for the Kansas City Royals, hitting .194/.324/.323 in 38 plate appearances over 11 games.

In six minor league seasons, Porter has hit .277/.401/.466 with 58 homers over 431 games.

Sean Manaea on the Hill

Left-handed pitcher Manaea took the loss after allowing five runs in five innings against the Mets last Friday.

Despite a strong first inning, he struggled to keep Miami off the bases, giving up hits and walks in every other inning.

This was his first game in July where he didn’t pitch at least six innings and the first time he allowed more than three runs since June.

Sean has a 3.73 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts in 101.1 innings this season.

Manaea has a .229 average against batters on his sinker this season, throwing it 39.7% of the time.

His sinker has a run value of 11, tied for 2nd best in the majors, with 34 strikeouts. He is 3-3 with a 3.89 ERA in 39.1 innings vs. the Yankees.

In a recent game, he threw 5.0 shutout innings with 2 hits, 5 walks, and 3 strikeouts in a 12-2 win.

Top Players

Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are among a select few players in the MLB with an OPS of at least 1.000 and a batting average over .300 this season.

They lead in walks, on-base percentage, and times on base in the league. This duo from the Yankees is only the second pair in over 80 years to reach base over 192 times in the team’s first 102 games of a season.

Soto’s recent multi-home run game tied him with Eddie Mathews for the second-most at his age.

Injuries to Consider

The Yankees remain without first baseman Anthony Rizzo, DH Giancarlo Stanton and catcher Jose Trevino, all on the injured list.

Stanton has been out with a strained left hamstring but Manager Aaron Boone said recently that the slugger “is in a pretty good spot” in terms of his progress and indicated that a return is a matter of building stamina.

Stanton won’t play in this series but perhaps will be activated this weekend.

Trevino sustained a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring July 12, but he has been progressing well since.

Austin Wells should continue to serve as the Yankees’ clear No. 1 catcher while Trevino is on the shelf.

Rizzo is still weeks away. Rookie Ben Rice has done nice work filling in for Rizzo at first base.

Gerrit Cole on the Hill

Ace right-handed pitcher Cole pitched a solid game, earning his third win of the season last Friday against Tampa Bay.

Cole allowed only one run on six hits and struck out eight batters over six innings.

He had an impressive 16 swinging strikes and has recorded at least seven strikeouts in his last three games.

Despite giving up a solo home run, Cole only allowed three hard-hit balls and continues to maintain strong statistics including a 10.43 strikeout per nine innings ratio.

Cole will make his second start in the Subway Series this season.

He had his worst outing the first time around on June 25 in a loss, allowing season-highs in earned runs (6), hits (7) home runs (4) and didn’t record a single strikeout, only the second time in his career he’s failed to do so.

Cole is now 2-6 with a 6.64 ERA in eight career appearances vs. the Mets.

Yankees vs Mets, June 25, 2024

The 2024 Subway Series starts Tuesday from Citi Field in Queens as the New York Yankees visit the New York Mets.

The matchup has added significance for the teams’ stature within their respective leagues, but it will also provide some interesting reunions with a few former Mets currently on the Yankees and vice versa. At MyBookie Sportsbook, the Yanks are favored on the MLB odds behind ace Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees are scuffling a bit as they have dropped three straight series and 3-6 in their past nine games following a 3-1 home loss to Atlanta on Sunday. NYY is not whole, either, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Giancarlo Stanton both on the IL.

Rizzo is expected to be sidelined eight weeks after he landed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a fractured right forearm.

Giancarlo Stanton

Stanton injured his hamstring on Saturday and will likely miss a month in his eighth trip to the IL in the past six seasons. Having missed 43 games last season with a left hamstring strain, Stanton said that he does not believe his current injury is as severe. He said that he received a PRP injection on Sunday, and though his frustration is evident, Stanton would prefer to look forward.

“Feelings don’t really matter in this time,” Stanton said. “It’s going to be about four weeks. I’ve got to do what I can do to get there.” He is slashing .246/.302/.492 (126 wRC+) with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs in 281 plate appearances this season.

Manager Aaron Boone suggested that Stanton’s current injury will mean increased turns in the designated hitter role for Aaron Judge with Trent Grisham playing center field.

With Rizzo and Stanton banged up, the Yanks added a bat on Sunday by trading for slugger JD Davis from Oakland. The 31-year-old was batting .236 (29-for-123) with four home runs and five RBIs in 39 games for Oakland this season, appearing defensively at first base and third base.

The A’s designated Davis for assignment on June 18. Davis should be in the lineup for Tuesday’s Subway Series opener, spelling a return to Citi Field for Davis, who played for the Mets from 2019-22.

New York’s 21 comeback wins this year are tied for the most in the majors. The Yanks have won or split 19 of their 25 completed series this season (going 17-6-2 in those series).

Aaron Judge leads the majors in HR (28), RBI (70), SLG (.686), OPS (1.108), extra-base hits (51), go-ahead RBI (20) and game-winning RBI (14).

Gerrit Cole

It’s ace righty and 2023 Cy Young winner Cole on the hill Tuesday. Cole made his season debut off some elbow trouble this past Wednesday and didn’t factor into the decision in a 7-6 loss to the Orioles, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings.

Cole surrendered a run on an RBI double by Ryan O’Hearn in the first inning then settled in over the next three frames. He allowed a single to Cedric Mullins to open the fifth and was pulled after throwing 62 pitches, but Mullins scored on a home run surrendered by Yankees reliever Ron Marinaccio.

Cole maxed out at 68 pitches during his minor-league rehab assignment, so the Yankees seemed to ease him back in for his 2024 MLB debut. He should increase his workload Tuesday. His average fastball velocity was down 1.6 mph from last season, but he still touched 97 mph against the Orioles.

Cole is 2-2 with a 5.89 ERA and 42 strikeouts in seven appearances versus the Mets in his career.

New York Mets Moneyline +122

The Mets are playing some of their best ball of the season, winning nine of 11. They took two of three at the Cubs over the weekend, taking the finale 5-2 on Sunday night.

All-Star closer Edwin Díaz came on to try to seal the victory, but was tossed for having a foreign substance after umpires inspected his right hand and glove. Per Major League Baseball’s rules, a player faces a 10-game suspension if they are found to have used illegal foreign substances.

Diaz missed all of last season after suffering a knee injury while celebrating Puerto Rico’s win in the World Baseball Classic. This year, he’s pitching to a 4.70 ERA with seven saves in 23 appearances.

He spent some time early this month on the injured list with a shoulder issue and was reinstated on June 13. The Mets cannot replace Diaz during his suspension and will play with 25 people on the roster instead of 26.

Starling Marte

Outfielder Marte was removed from Saturday’s game with right knee soreness and was to have an MRI on Monday for an issue that’s lingered throughout June, but the team hopes he doesn’t have to hit the injured list.

Marte was absent from Sunday’s starting lineup against the Cubs, a day after departing in the second inning with the knee barking.

Over the last 15 games, Marte is batting .357. The Mets have had their complete starting lineup active only since Francisco Alvarez’s return from the injured list on June 11. The catcher missed seven weeks rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament.

David Peterson

It’s lefty Peterson (3-0) on the mound Tuesday. Peterson allowed two runs in six innings and got the win in the Mets’ 14-2 victory over the Rangers last Monday.

Peterson gave up four hits, walked three and struck out six. He’s now won three consecutive starts and the six strikeouts were a season-high. A former first round pick by the Mets in 2017, Peterson is once again getting a chance in the Mets’ rotation and seems to be making the most of it.

He struggled with a 5.03 ERA in 27 appearances last year, but his 3.59 xFIP suggested he wasn’t quite that bad. He now has a 3.97 ERA in four starts this year.

In two career appearances against the Yankees (one as a reliever), Peterson has a 10.38 ERA. He will be pitching on five days’ rest.
