NBA Betting Odds: Detroit Pistons Analysis

The Pistons snapped a two-game skid with a 107-96 upset win in Houston on Monday as 8-point underdogs. After Houston cut Detroit’s lead to 90-85 three minutes into the fourth quarter, Marcus Sasser hit a jumper and three-pointer to spark an 11-2 run as Detroit pulled away. The Rockets came into the game the NBA’s top rebounding team but got muscled by the Pistons to the tune of a 52-39 rebound advantage.

Malike Beasley

“Our chemistry is unmatched from any team in the league,” Beasley said after contributing 17 points to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday matinee win. “I think we’ve got the best chemistry, and that’s why we’re moving the way we’re moving.” Beasley leads the league with nine games this season with at least six 3-pointers made. He is on pace for 304 3PM, which would be a Pistons all-time single-season record (211, Saddiq Bey, 2020-21) and the 7th-most in NBA history.

The Turnovers

The Pistons committed 23 turnovers, but were able to overcome it by forcing the Rockets into 17 turnovers and converting it into 19 points. Houston also shot just 39% overall and struggled from 3, connecting on 11 of 39. Detroit had a 50-40 edge in points in the paint.

Jalen Duren

Center Duren was excellent in the win with 16 points on 8-for-8 shooting, 14 rebounds, two blocks and four steals in his third straight double-double. Duren, who has also scored in double digits in five straight outings, is averaging 11.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game since the beginning of January. Duren’s 79 double-doubles through 168 games place him behind Bill Laimbeer (102) and Andre Drummond (80).

Cade Cunningham

“He was all over the place,” star Cunningham said of Duren. “Even the ones he didn’t come down with rebounding-wise, he was covering the whole floor. He was everywhere. That’s what we needed from him, and that’s a big reason we won.”

Cunningham continued his All-Star-caliber season with 32 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. He’s averaging 25.8 points, 8.5 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game since the beginning of January. Ausar Thompson had 11 points and nine rebounds and should continue to start as long as Jaden Ivey (lower leg) remains sidelined and Ivey isn’t close to a return.

J.B. Bickerstaff

“Oddly enough, our guys kind of thrive on the road,” Coach Bickerstaff said after the Pistons improved to 12-10 away from home. “Whatever those environments bring to them, I think it just highlights how connected this group is, and they like to play in adverse environments. They like to be put in a situation where it’s Detroit vs. everybody. When it seems to be that way, we seem to be at our best.”

The Rankings

The Pistons rank 3rd in the NBA with 18.1 fast break points per game this season and have recorded 20+ in each of their past three games. Since Dec. 31, they also have been one of the NBA’s top three-point teams at 37.6%, sixth in the league. Detroit is on pace for a franchise-record 27-win improvement in 2024-25 from last season.

NBA Betting Odds: Atlanta Hawks Analysis

The Hawks had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 119-110 loss at the Knicks on Monday. In a 16-second span midway through the fourth quarter, Jalen Brunson converted a backdoor layup to give the Knicks a 107-100 lead and on the ensuing possession drew a charge from Dyson Daniels. New York cruised the rest of the way.

Trae Young

Young led the Hawks with 27 points, shooting 8-for-22 and recording six assists. He had a strong first half with 18 points and five 3-pointers but slowed for second half. Young has scored 20 or more points in nine consecutive games and, on Monday, became the third player in NBA history to record five or more assists in 200 straight games, joining John Stockton and Isiah Thomas. He averages 32.7 points over the last three games, shooting 44.1% from three.

Quin Snyder

Coach Snyder made a change on Monday in shifting usual starting center Clint Capela to a reserve role and putting usual sixth man Onyeka Okongwu into the starting five. After logging a double-double in his last three games off the bench, Okongwu fell just short of that mark in his first outing as a starter this season, with 14 points and nine rebounds. Capela had started 313 of 316 games since arriving in Atlanta in February 2020 and hadn’t come off the bench since Jan. 2023.

Onyeka Okongwu

The move could be construed as a transition to a younger player as Okongwu, 24, is in the first year of a four-year extension he signed in Oct. 2023. The 30-year-old Capela will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. The Hawks have reportedly been looking to move him, but his $22.2MM salary could be a stumbling block in trade negotiations.

De’Andre Hunter

Hunter had 22 points off the bench and is averaging 19 points on 46.4 percent shooting from the field between the two contests since his return from a foot injury. Hunter has scored 20-or-more points in 16 games off the bench, the most by any reserve in the league this season. He is leading all bench players in points per game (19.5), 4.4 points per game more than the next closest player (Malik Beasley: 15.1).

The Steals

Atlanta had 10 steals vs. the Knicks, its 27th double-digit steal contest of the season, the most by an Eastern Conference team and the second-most by any team in the NBA (Oklahoma City: 28). The Hawks are averaging a conference-best 10.26 steals per game this season, on pace to be the third-highest steals per game in franchise history.

Home Games

Atlanta’s Hawks will play their only home game in a 24-day span, marking their 19th game of the season. The Hawks have won their last four games at home, and have a 7-3 record against Eastern Conference clubs. Atlanta has won seven consecutive home games over the Pistons.

Pistons vs Hawks Season Series

Detroit leads 1–0 thanks to a 122-121 victory at home on Nov. 8, and they have two more meetings after Wednesday. Cade Cunningham had a triple-double in the first meeting and scored the winning basket with 8.5 seconds left. Cunningham finished 22 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds. Malik Beasley and Tobias Harris also scored 22 points for Detroit.

Trae Young gave the Hawks their first lead of the game at 121-120 with 12.5 seconds left. But Cunningham drove and hit a hook shot in traffic to put Detroit back in front. Young then drove to the basket before dishing the ball to Onyeka Okongwu, but Cunningham blocked his shot as time expired. Young had 35 points and 13 assists. Jalen Johnson scored 20 for Atlanta.
