Series History

The teams haven’t played since 2019. It’s Detroit’s first trip to Arrowhead Stadium since 2003 and the second time the Lions have opened their season against the defending Super Bowl champions, with their only other occurrence coming in 1967 against the Green Bay Packers, who were coming off a victory in Super Bowl I.

Defensively, rookie end Aidan Hutchinson last year became the first NFL 1st player with 9.5 sacks & 3 picks in a season since Richard Dent in 1990. Mahomes has won five straight Week 1 games and has at least three TD passes in each, the longest streak in NFL history.

Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and WR Kadarius Toney are both banged up but expected to play. However, the team’s top defensive player, Pro Bowl lineman Chris Jones, is holding out for a new deal and not expected to go. He is entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million pact, and has been racking up millions in fines for missing offseason workouts, training camp and all three preseason games. Jones tied a career high with 15 1/2 sacks last season, picked up his first postseason sacks and helped the Chiefs beat Philadelphia in the Super Bowl.
