Week 6: Monday, May 6th – Sunday, May 12th, 2024

Jack Flaherty, Detroit Tigers

Tigers vs Gaurdians | Jack Flaherty vs Triston McKenzie

Monday, May 6th, 2024 at 6:10 PM | FS1
Progressive Field

The 28-year-old from Burbank, California, has yet to record a win with the Tigers this season. Flaherty is making his seventh start of the season, and twice has struck out 10+ guys in a game. Flaherty will get a chance on Monday to grab his first win but will face a tough Cleveland lineup.

As the weekend rolls in, Flaherty will be in line for a start again likely on Sunday. He will take on the Houston Astros in that game. It will be interesting to see if Flaherty can keep his strikeout pitch in line as he maneuvers through the week.

Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs

Padres vs Cubs | Undecided vs Shota Imanaga

Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 at 7:40 PM | MLB Network
Wrigley Field

The 30-year-old from Japan has been outstanding in starting the season. He is 5-0 on the season, with a 0.78 earned run average. He has 35 strikeouts so far on the season as well. Monday would be his normal start opportunity, but there is talk about Justin Steele‘s return for Chicago. Imanaga will look to make it 6 in a row to start his MLB career.

He also may get a chance later in the weekend as the Cubs go to Pittsburgh to battle the Pirates.

Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks

D’Backs vs Reds | Zac Gallen vs Frankie Montas

Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 at 6:40 PM | MLB Network
Great American Ball Park

The Diamondbacks are the defending National League Champions but have scuffled a bit out of the gate. Arizona will start a series at the Reds on Tuesday, and Gallen will get the nod. Gallen is 3-2 on the season, with a 3.38 earned run average.

There is a chance Gallen will go again on Sunday to wrap up the week. If he does go, he will face a tough Baltimore team on the road. Gallen has Cy Young stuff, and he will need to bring it this week. Keep an eye on him!

Corbin Burnes, Baltimore Orioles

Orioles vs Nationals | Corbin Burnes vs Trevor Williams

Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 at 6:45 PM | MLB Network
Nationals Park

Corbin Burnes will lead the first place Baltimore Orioles in two starts this week. Burnes has been tough so far this season at 3-1, with a 2.61 earned run average. He has struck out 41 batters, and walked just 9. He will get the nod on the road at Washington on Tuesday, and then he could go again on SUnday against Arizona. It is not clear whether they will keep him on a normal schedule and go on Sunday or keep their rotation in tack. Regardless, the right hander is nasty and one to watch this week.

Walker Buehler, Los Angeles Dodgers

Marlins vs Dodgers | Roddery Munoz vs Walker Buehler

Monday, May 6th, 2024 at 9:40 PM | MLB Network
Dodger Stadium

Buehler is going to get his first start back from the elbow injury. Buehler will get two starts this week. He will get a home matchup against the Marlins on Monday and then again over the weekend as the Dodgers are in San Diego.

Do not expect Buehler to dominate completely and go deep into the game. The Dodgers want to see him progress to his way back to full health and ability. Buehler will be a good one to follow this week to see how his first two starts of the season go.

MLB Odds and Picks: 4 Pitchers to Consider into Week 6

Previous Betting News

In team sports, you need a solid roster to win a championship, but the fact of the matter is that some pieces are definitely more important than others. In soccer, you need a guy that can score regularly, while the best football teams tend to have an elite QB. In baseball, most teams will live or die by their pitching rotation, with the best teams in the league usually having 3 or 4 elite starters on their roster. Yes, teams still need to put runs on the board to win, but if they can limit the number of runs they give up, they will have a chance to win every single night. Now that we are 5 weeks into the season, we have had a good look at all the starters, which means it’s time to pick those guys who are getting the job done on a regular basis, so let’s see the analysis to consider betting against their MLB odds.

MLB Pitchers to Back after Week 5 of the season | MLB Lines by MyBookie

Shane McClanahan
Tampa Bay Rays

Given how good the Tampa Bay Rays have looked through the opening 5 weeks of the season, it’s probably no surprise to see that they have one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. McClanahan has been dominant from the off, going 7-0 and posting an ERA of just 1.76 with 58 strikeouts. He is very much on a Cy Young pace at this point and showing no real signs of slowing down anytime soon. I would be willing to wager on the Rays every time McClanahan is listed as the starter for the remainder of the season.

Shohei Ohtani
LA Angels

While he may not be among the leaders in wins or ERA at the moment, you cannot deny that Ohtani is a game changer when he is on the mound. His numbers are solid this season, as he is 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA and 59K. While he would definitely like to get that ERA down, Ohtani is still a guy that you expect to win more often than not when he is on the mound. I actually think he is going to get better as the season progresses, especially if the Angels can stay in the playoff hunt, so I would absolutely be willing to back him.

Gerrit Cole
New York Yankees

The Yankees are proving to be tough to figure out this season, as they find themselves in the cellar in the AL East despite having a winning record. While they struggle to get on track, there have been zero issues for Cole, who has been very good through the opening 5 weeks of the season. Cole is 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA and 58K. He is holding up his end of the bargain for the Yankees, who I think still have the potential to get on a roll in the coming weeks.

Sonny Gray
Minnesota Twins

The Twins have the lead in the AL Central and a big part of their early success has been down to their pitching staff. At the head of that group is Sonny Gray, who has been lighting it up through the opening 5 weeks of the season. Gray is 4-0 and has the best ERA in baseball right now at 1.35. He doesn’t have as many strikeouts (47) as the other guys on this list, but he has been money when on the mound this season.

MLB Odds and Picks: 4 Pitchers not to Consider into Week 6

Previous Betting News

There are many different factors to look at when wagering on baseball, not the least of which is the pitching matchup in any given game. There is money to be made if you can identify what looks to be a bad matchup with starting pitchers. To be fair, no player makes it to the MLB, especially as a starting pitcher, if they are not skilled, but some do better than others. Oftentimes, there is an element of luck required for a pitcher to have a great season, by which I mean that they get the run support from their offense and quality fielding from their supporting cast. It doesn’t play out that way for everyone, though, so we are going to look at 4 pitchers to avoid right now. These guys are not necessarily on the cellar dwelling teams, as that would be too easy, so let’s take a look at the MLB betting analysis for which pitchers to avoid.

MLB Pitchers to Avoid after Week 5 of the 2023 Season | MLB Lines by MyBookie

Zack Wheeler
Philadelphia Phillies

This pick may be seen by some as a little unfair given that Wheeler does have a winning record (3-2) this season, but there are still some red flags that need to be addressed. The biggest of those is his 4.26 ERA, as well as how he has played over the last week. During the last 7 days, Wheeler is 0-1 and has an ERA of 6.75, with just 5K during that time. That may be a sign that his current overall ERA is about to get worse, especially since the Phillies are heading in the wrong direction in the standings.

Logan Webb
San Francisco Giants

It has not been what anyone would describe as a terrible season for Webb, but he is one of those pitchers who does not seem to be getting a ton of help from his teammates. His ERA of 3.80 is not awful, but he has just not been able to translate that into wins, as he heads into Week 6 with a 2-5 record. If you look at his last 4 losses, you see that the Giants only managed a total of 7 runs when Webb was on the mound. That lack of run support can be a killer for a pitcher, so I would avoid him until that trend changes.

Max Scherzer
New York Mets

You cannot deny how good Scherzer has been in his time in the MLB, but this is a player struggling to stay healthy this season, which is having a negative impact on his performance. He currently has a 2-2 record and an ERA of 5.56, with just 20K. His last start came against the Colorado Rockies, and it was particularly alarming. The Mets lost 13-6 and Scherzer put up an abysmal 16.20 ERS. Until he gets healthy, we are avoiding him whenever he starts.

MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Justin Verlander
New York Mets

This is more of a wait and see as opposed to a total avoid scenario. Verlander finally made it into the lineup after recovering from injury, losing 2-0 to the Detroit Tigers after pitching 5 innings and posting a 3.60 ERA. Certainly not an awful performance, but at 40 years of age, you do have to wonder how much gas he has left in the tank. The Mets have gone all in on veteran pitchers, which could prove to be a genius move or a total disaster.
