Could be a bit of a trap game for the New York Knicks on Monday when they host the terrible Detroit Pistons. We say trap because the Knicks are off a big game and loss to Boston and play again Tuesday against a good New Orleans team. New York is a heavy favorite on the NBA odds for Monday and has won 13 straight in the series.

Pistons vs Knicks Season Series
Monday is the second of three meetings between the teams. The Pistons visited the Knicks on Nov. 30 and lost 118-112. Jalen Brunson scored 42 points and Julius Randle had 29 points and 10 rebounds. RJ Barrett had 15 points and Donte DiVincenzo added 12, including two crucial 3-pointers down the stretch for the Knicks. Barrett has since been traded to Toronto. Cade Cunningham scored 31 points and Killian Hayes shot 10 for 13 from the field to finish with 23 for the Pistons. They have also lost 13 in a row against the Knicks.
Why Bet on Detroit Pistons?
The Pistons enter on a five-game skid after losing 112-109 at home to Orlando on Saturday. Magic star and former No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero broke a tie on a three-point play with 0.8 seconds left and finished with 15 points. Orlando’s star made an 18-foot baseline jumper and a free throw after missing two free throws with 17.9 seconds left, allowing Detroit to stay within two points. Cade Cunningham had a tying layup with 12.4 seconds to go and, with a chance to send the game to overtime, he hit the rim on a 70-plus-foot shot at the buzzer.

“I was proud of the way we hung in there,” Pistons coach Monty Williams said. “Our defense in the second half is a benchmark of how we want to play, (giving up) 47 points to a team that was having their way in the first half, that says a lot about what we can do.”
Cunningham finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He’s averaging 20.0 points, 7.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game since the beginning of February. Cunningham is averaging a career-high 7.5 dimes to go with 4.1 rebounds this season, and he’s shooting career-high marks from the field (45.1%) and from the charity stripe (85.7%). That assist number is the most by a Piston since Brandon Jennings in 2013-14 (7.6). Cunningham’s 12 30-point performances this season are the fourth-most by any Piston through 56 team games in the past 30 seasons.
Jalen Duren had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds – he has five double-doubles over his past seven games. Much like Cunningham, Duren went into the All-Star break amid a slump. He averaged just 7.5 points and 8.5 boards in two games before the break, but since returning, Duren has two straight double-doubles with averages of 15.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Saturday’s double-double marked his 29th in 41 games this season, and the second-year man is averaging a healthy 14 points and 12 boards per tilt. He’s fifth in the NBA in rebounds per game. Duren is on pace to become the only player in franchise history to average at least 14.0 PTS, 12.0 REB, 2.0 AST and .600 FG% in a season.
Quentin Grimes, acquired from the Knicks earlier this month, had five points, four assists and two rebounds in his Pistons debut – he had been out with a knee injury. That Ausar Thompson was limited to 21 minutes due to foul trouble might have had a hand in Grimes seeing a big role, as did the continued absence of Isaiah Stewart, who will complete his three-game suspension Monday against the Knicks before returning to action Tuesday in Chicago.
Guard Marcus Sasser is out Monday. Sasser’s minutes as a primary backup to Cunningham should be distributed amongst Grimes, Shake Milton and Malachi Flynn. Sasser is shooting .424 from deep this season, second-highest among this year’s rookies class, 17th among qualified players in the NBA, and currently the second-highest by a rookie in franchise history. His last game before the All-Star break against Phoenix (2/14) ended a streak of nine consecutive games in which he made a 3-pointer, the seventh-longest streak by a rookie in franchise history.
Detroit is getting 40.7 points from its bench this year, the sixth-most in the NBA. The second unit is also shooting .368 3PT%, the ninth-best rate in the league this season.

Why Bet on New York Knicks?
The Knicks remain without injured starters Mitchell Robinson, trade acquisition OG Anunoby and All-Star forward Julius Randle and were beaten 116-102 at home by Boston on Saturday. The Celtics opened the second half with a 4-point lead before the All-Star tandem of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum along with Kristaps Porzingis, a 2015 first-round draft pick of the Knicks, sparked a 30-11 spurt to put the game out of reach. New York is now 2-6 since a nine-game winning streak ended.

Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 34 points in Saturday’s loss to go with nine assists and three boards. In February, he’s averaging 32.1 points and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the floor. It was Brunson’s 23rd 30-point game of the season, which ties Stephen Curry for fifth for most such games in the NBA.
Brunson is also the only player in the NBA this season to eclipse 1,450 points, 140 made three pointers, while shooting at least 40-percent from deep. Without Randle and Anunoby, the Knicks have been overly reliant on Brunson’s brilliance and don’t have much of a Plan B if he can’t carry them to a win.
“It’s definitely difficult, but we gotta step up to the challenge,” Brunson said after Saturday’s loss. “I gotta be better, plain and simple, from a vocal leader standpoint to not turning the ball over, to being a better decision-maker. They got on runs, turnovers, getting in transition and getting 3s and timely offensive rebounds. They’re good for a reason, and we just gotta be better.”
Josh Hart finished Saturday’s loss with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists as he continues to shine in the starting lineup. Through 11 games running with the first unit, Hart boasts averages of 11.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Hart has joined Randle and Immanuel Quickley as the only Knicks to record multiple triple doubles in a single season since 1990. He is also the ninth player in the NBA to record multiple triple doubles this season.
Donte DiVincenzo had 12 points and four rebounds in 32 minutes. DiVincenzo drained four threes, marking his third straight game with four or more makes from beyond the arc, but he didn’t do much else. He’s been impactful as a shooter ever since he moved into a permanent starting role, making 41.2 percent of his 8.6 threes per game since Dec. 8.
DiVincenzo has 172 made three-pointers on the season, the ninth-most in franchise history. He’s the only Knick within the top 10 all time to shoot at least 40-percent from the three-point line.
