The Beltway Series starts on Tuesday night as the scuffling Washington Nationals look to play a spoiler role as they visit the AL East-contending Baltimore Orioles, who are solid favorites on the MLB odds behind new addition Trevor Rogers.

Washington Nationals Moneyline +147

The Nationals (54-64) sit fourth in the NL East and that’s where they should finish – not clear if manager Dave Martinez will be back in 2025 as the club was at least expected to be around .500 this year. Washington had a chance on Sunday for a home three-game sweep of the Angels but lost 6-4. The Nationals issued 13 walks, matching their most since the franchise moved to Washington in 2005. The Angels turned four of those into runs to help deny the Nationals their fourth series sweep of the season.

CJ Abrams

Dynamic Washington shortstop Abrams was out of the lineup Sunday for the third consecutive game with upper-back tightness, but it’s not expected that he will go on the injured list. The 23-year-old All-Star said he first experienced back discomfort during rain delays on Thursday against San Francisco. Abrams has 23 doubles, 17 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 59 RBI and 68 runs scored in 108 games this year with an OPS+ of 118 and 3.3 WAR. He’s a big piece of the future.

Jose Tena

Fellow infielder Tena had X-rays come back negative after leaving Sunday’s game against the Angels and is dealing with a fingernail issue. The 23-year-old made his second straight start at third base Sunday but exited during the fourth inning when he was struck in the right hand by a hard grounder. Tena is day-to-day.

Andres Chaparro

Because of those injuries, the Nationals will call up third baseman Chaparro from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Tuesday’s game. Washington acquired Chaparro at the trade deadline from Arizona for relief pitcher Dylan Floro. The 25-year-old Chaparro will get his first taste of the big leagues after he combined to hit .328 with 23 home runs, 85 RBI, 76 runs and three stolen bases over 105 games with Triple-A Reno and Triple-A Rochester this season.

Since he doesn’t have much of a defensive profile, Chaparro will need to continue hitting if he’s going to factor into any of Washington’s future plans, or get any significant MLB playing time over the rest of the season. The Nationals have space on their 40-man roster, so they’ll just need to make a move on their 26-man roster to find room for Chaparro.

Alex Call

Nats outfielder Call had had his sixth straight multi-hit game in Sunday’s loss, the longest such streak of his career and longest by a Nationals’ player since Ryan Zimmerman in 2017. Call is batting .456 with five doubles, a homer, 10 RBIs, three steals and five runs scored in 13 games in his latest MLB stint.

Jake Irvin on the Mound

It’s righty Irvin on the hill Tuesday. Irvin (8-10) took the loss last Wednesday against the Giants, surrendering five runs on eight hits — including three home runs — and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

Mike Yastrzemski popped a solo shot off the right-hander in the fourth inning, before Heliot Ramos and Matt Chapman both took him deep in the fifth. Issues keeping the ball in the yard are nothing new for Irvin, as he’s been tagged for multiple homers in four of his last six trips to the mound, and over that stretch he’s seen his ERA on the season rise from 2.80 to 3.76. There were calls for Irvin to make the All-Star team a month ago, but he’s posted a 6.82 ERA in his last six starts, mostly because he’s given up as many homers (10) as he did in his first 18 starts.

Irvin faces the Orioles for the first time in his career. He is 6-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 14 starts on the road this season.

Baltimore Orioles Moneyline -172

The Orioles (70-49) and Yankees are neck-and-neck for the AL East title, but both will make the playoffs, as the second-place team should be the AL’s top wild-card team. Baltimore was trying for a three-game sweep at Tampa Bay on Sunday but lost 2-1.

Brandon Lowe

The Rays’ Lowe walked to open the eighth against struggling reliever Craig Kimbrel (6-4) and stole second with one out. Christopher Morel drew a walk, the Rays had a double steal and Josh Lowe was intentionally walked to load the bases before Curtis Mead hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Kimbrel, fifth all-time with 440 saves, didn’t work the ninth for the fourth straight appearances after posting a 13.50 ERA during the second half of July. Kimbrel issued three walks (one intentional) and allowed four stolen bases in the inning Sunday, as the Rays used small-ball maneuvers to manufacture the winning run. The 36-year-old hasn’t recorded a save since July 7 and hasn’t pitched in a save situation since July 25.

Gunnar Henderson

Henderson was a bright spot in Sunday’s loss, as he was 3-for-4 with a double. The AL MVP candidate has logged three hits in four of his last eight games. The shortstop has struggled on the power front lately, contributing five doubles, one triple and one home run over 22 contests since the All-Star break. Still, he’s hitting consistently and has a .290/.376/.553 slash line, 29 homers, 69 RBI, 94 runs scored, 23 doubles and 14 stolen bases through 117 contests.

Baltimore leads MLB with 184 home runs. The O’s are averaging 1.55 homers per game this season, which would be the third-best mark in team history, behind 1996 (1.58) and 2016 (1.56).

Trevor Rogers on the Hill

The Orioles’ season-long 10-game road trip had ups and downs, as they finished 5-5 on the swing. Now they play 10 of their next 13 at home. It’s recently acquired lefty Trevor Rogers on the mound Tuesday – he was acquired around last month’s deadline from Miami.

Rogers (2-10, 4.71 ERA) came away with a no-decision in last Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Blue Jays, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two. Rogers left after 94 pitches (59 strikes) in line for a loss, but the Baltimore offense got rolling in the late innings. He was fortunate to give up just the two earned runs. Toronto put at least one on base in every inning and forced Rogers to navigate through multiple jams. Those seven hits weren’t cheap either as Rogers allowed seven hard hit balls and lots of contact.

Rogers showed some jitters in his Orioles’ debut Aug. 1, but he was back in his usual form Wednesday — he’s allowed two earned runs or less in six of seven outings since the beginning of July, although he has zero quality starts to show for it as he hasn’t lasted longer than 5.2 innings in any of those appearances. Rogers is 3-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 10 career appearances vs. Washington.
