For the first time since 2009, the New York Yankees host a World Series game as they welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 3 of the Fall Classic, with the Yanks as favorites on the MLB odds despite trailing 2-0 in the series.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?
The Dodgers won Game 2 by a score of 4-2 on Saturday, but it might have been costly, with superstar and lock NL MVP Shohei Ohtani injuring his shoulder while sliding into second base on an unsuccessful steal attempt in the bottom of the seventh. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Ohtani suffered a subluxation of his left shoulder, but the team is “encouraged” by Ohtani’s range of motion and strength.
Ohtani’s spot in the lineup did not come up again, so he was never technically pulled from the game. Roberts later added, when asked if the Dodgers were equipped to play the rest of the World Series without Ohtani: “I’m expecting him to be there. I’m expecting him to be in the lineup.”
Shohei Ohtani is expected to play #WorldSeries Game 3, Dave Roberts tells ESPN.

Shohei Ohtani In regular season
He slashed .310/.390/.646 in an NL-leading 731 plate appearances, and with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases he authored the first 50-50 season in Major League Baseball history. Coming off a strong NLCS performance against the Mets, Ohtani through the first two games of this World Series has not made much of an impact. Against the Yankees, he’s gone 1 for 7 with a double, a walk, a caught stealing, and a run scored.
How would they play without Ohtani?
If Ohtani can’t play, the likelihood is that Freddie Freeman moves from first to DH, Max Muncy from third to first, Enrique Henriquez from second to third base and Gavin Lux at second. Freeman, who won Game 1 with an extra-inning grand slam hit and another homer to help win Game 2 is now the betting favorite to win World Series MVP. Teoscar Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run against the Yankees on Saturday. The homer was his third of the playoffs, a two-run shot to the opposite field off Carlos Rodon in the third inning. Hernandez put the Dodgers ahead for good.
This marks the fifth time the Dodgers have won each of the first two games in the World Series, joining: 1988, 1978, 1963 and 1956. The Dodgers went on to win the World Series in 1988 over the Athletics and 1963 over the Yankees (sweep). Previously, the Dodgers held a 2-0 lead over the Yankees in the World Series in 1978 (lost series 4-2), 1963 (swept series, 4-0) and 1956 (lost series, 4-3). It is the 57th time that a club has taken a 2-0 advantage in the World Series, with that club going on to win Game 3 24 previous times (42.9%) and win the World Series 45 times (80.4%). The last club to take a 2-0 World Series lead was the Nationals in 2019 as they went on to beat the Astros in 7 games.
Walker Buehler
It’s righty Buehler on the mound Monday. Walker Buehler struck out six in four scoreless innings against the Mets in Game 3 of the NLCS. Buehler found himself in a couple of jams, but this was perhaps the best he’s looked all season. Working exclusively out of the stretch, he got 18 swings and misses and had a 39% CSW. All three hits he allowed were singles.
Starting Buehler in Game 3 — rather than utilizing the off day to run the bullpen game that night — lines him up as an option for a potential winner-take-all Game 7 from Dodger Stadium.
^Why Bet on NY Yankees?
It is the ninth time that the Yankees face a 2-0 deficit in the World Series, joining: 2001, 1996, 1978, 1976, 1963, 1958, 1956 and 1922. They went on to win the Fall Classic in 1996 over the Braves; 1978 over the Dodgers; 1958 over the Braves; and 1956 over the Dodgers.
Juan Soto
Soto was a bright spot in Saturday’s 4-2 loss by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Soto crushed his fourth home run of the playoffs. It was a solo shot off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the third inning. Soto also started the Yankees’ rally in the ninth inning with a single off Dodgers closer Blake Treinen. He’s hitting .350 with a 1.160 OPS and nine RBI in the playoffs.
Juan is just the third Yankees player with four home runs in a single postseason, which has tied the game or put New York in the lead. Soto joins Giancarlo Stanton, who has four such homers this postseason and Bernie Williams, who hit four such home runs in 1996. Overall, Soto is the 23rd player with four such homers in the postseason, and it is the 24th time that it has happened. Stanton and Soto are just the second pair of teammates with at least four home runs to tie the game or take the lead, joining Altuve and Carlos Correa of the 2020 Astros, who also hit four such homers a piece. Overall, the Yankees have hit 10 home runs this postseason that have tied the game or put them into the lead, the most of any club this October.
Aaron Judge
Judge went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the loss. Judge’s swing looks broken, with John Smoltz noting on the FOX broadcast that Judge’s front hip is flying open too early, which is preventing him from driving the ball. Judge is now 6-for-40 with 19 strikeouts in the playoffs. That’s a 47 percent strikeout percentage, which is nearly twice as high as the 24 percent strikeout percentage he had during the regular season. He’s 1-for-9 with six strikeouts already in the World Series.
“I’ve got to step up,” Judge said late Saturday night. “I’ve got to do my job. The guys around me are doing their job getting on base and I’m failing them backing them up.”
"I think it's trying to make things happen instead of letting the game come to you. That's what it really comes down to… I gotta start swinging at strikes."

Clarke Schmidt
Schmidt starts on the mound for the Yankees. He allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings and got a no-decision against the Guardians in Game 3 of the ALCS. Schmidt gave up five hits, walked two and struck out two. The Yankees had a 1-0 lead when Schmidt gave up a two-run home run to Kyle Manzardo in the third inning. Those were the only runs off Schmidt on the day. It was a solid effort, though Schmidt hasn’t been quite as sharp during the playoffs (3.86 ERA) as he was in the regular season (2.85 ERA).
“All the games I pitch are pressure at this point,” Schmidt said after Saturday’s Game 2 loss. “It’s something I’ll be ready for, and I’m excited to get back out there. I treat every game at this point — I think we all do — as a must-win. Whatever the record is, we’re treating each game like we have to win every game. Mentality-wise, nothing’s changing.”
