New York has disappointed so far this season but did take three of four in Cleveland over the weekend so perhaps is turning things around. The Bombers did lose the final on Sunday, though, 7-3. Franmil Reyes homered in the fourth off Jameson Taillon as Cleveland overcame a 3-0 deficit and took a 4-3 lead. The Yankees, tied for last in the AL East at 9-12, were seeking their first four-game sweep in Cleveland since 1996.

Outfielder Aaron Hicks sat out Sunday with back discomfort but it’s not expected to be anything that keeps him out long term. e. The 31-year-old switch-hitter homered in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday at Cleveland – his first time homering in consecutive contests since July 23-24, 2019. Hicks is batting .172 (11-for-64) with three homers and seven RBIs this season.

Right-hander Deivi Garcia will be recalled from the alternate training site to make his season debut in this one on the mound. Rated as the Yanks’ No. 3 prospect by MLB Pipeline, García has been working on his slider command. This spring, García competed with right-hander Michael King and others for a rotation slot that went to right-hander Domingo German. Garcia was 3-2 with a 4.98 ERA in six regular-season starts last season.

“I’m just more mature as a pitcher [compared to 2020],” García said. “When you have the experience, I had last year here with the team, it allows you to make better decisions and execute better pitches. I think in addition to my slider, my changeup is also a weapon for me. I’ve got more confidence in the pitch. I’ve been able to use it more this year. So the combination of all those things, I think just ends up moving me forward in my development as a pitcher.”

In five official spring training starts this year, he posted a 3.86 ERA (14.0IP, 6ER) with 14K. Over his first four spring starts, he allowed just 2ER in 11.0IP while striking out 12 batters but was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in late March.

Garcia will be making his second career start vs. the Orioles. He faced them at Camden Yards on Sept. 4, 2020, recording his first MLB loss (4.2IP, 5H, 4ER, 2BB, 6K, 1HR, 1HP).

Each of the Yankees’ last six wins have been come-from-behind wins.

Why Bet on Baltimore? | MLB Betting Odds

Baltimore has played the third-hardest strength of schedule in the majors, according to Baseball-Reference. Only the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies have had a tougher path so far. The Orioles’ next five series opponents (NYY, OAK, SEA, BOS, NYM) have a combined .570 (57-43) winning percentage.

The Orioles avoided a home sweep by Oakland on Sunday with an 8-1 win. Trey Mancini hit a two-run single and also walked. Mancini put the finishing touches on the win by lining a two-run single to left field with two outs in the eighth inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats.

Cedric Mullins went 3-for-5 on Sunday, all singles. It was his eighth multi-hit effort in 21 games to open the 2021 season. The 26-year-old outfielder is hitting .346/.404/.481 with eight runs scored, one homer, four RBI and two steals in 89 plate appearances.

It’s Matt Harvey (1-1, 5.12) on the mound. Harvey earned his first victory since July 2019 his last time out, logging five innings against the Marlins. He came to bat in the Orioles’ three-run first inning before he even took the mound. Harvey then gave a run back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out RBI single by Adam Duvall.

Harvey pitched out of jams in the second and the third before giving up a couple more runs in the fifth on a trio of singles. Harvey scattered a season-worst eight hits on the night, but he managed to limit the damage while keeping his command in check, not walking any batters for the first time this year.

Harvey has made four career starts against the Yankees in which he is 1-0 with a 1.63 ERA (5 ER/27.2 IP), five walks, and 26 strikeouts. He last faced the Yankees on 4/22/19 while with the Angels.
