Hawks vs Jazz First Meeting

On Feb. 27, the Hawks routed the visiting Jazz 124-97. Atlanta never trailed after scoring the first 12 points. Jalen Johnson had 22 points with 13 rebounds, De’Andre Hunter scored 20 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic had 19. Collin Sexton led Utah with 22 points. Walker Kessler added 14 points with 12 rebounds. The Jazz lead the all-time series 58-53 and 35-19 at home but did lose in Salt Lake City to the Hawks last season.

Why Bet on Atlanta Hawks?

The Hawks enter on a two-game skid and started a trip through the Western Conference with a 106-102 loss in Portland on Wednesday. Atlanta led by as many as 16 in the first half but Portland led by seven entering the fourth. Dejounte Murray’s 3-pointer got Atlanta within 103-102 with 17.1 seconds to go, but Deandre Ayton made the first of two free throws and Portland hung on for the victory.

Murray was great with 40 points, four rebounds and three assists in 43 minutes – he was one point away from tying his career-best scoring output. Murray has been taking over on offense for the Hawks ever since Trae Young (finger) got sidelined, and he’s averaging 25.7 points, 8.0 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game since the end of the All-Star break. Murray’s 16 three-pointers over his last three games are the most made triples over a three-game span in his career. He enters Friday two three-pointers shy of tying Jamal Crawford (282) for the 18th-most three-pointers in franchise history.

Clint Capela had 13 points and 14 rebounds for his third straight double-double. This season, the big man ranks 10th in the NBA in rebounds per game (10.5), while leading the league in offensive rebounds per game (4.7).

Bogdan Bogdanovic played for Atlanta despite an illness the team announced earlier in the Day, and he finished 3-for-15 from the floor with eight points and seven rebounds. Both Bogdanovic and Murray have swiped 81 total steals this season, tied for the 10th-most steals by any player in the NBA. The Hawks duo are one of only three pairs of teammates in the league to be ranked top 10 in total steals this season, joining Kawhi Leonard (98, 4th) and Paul George (90, 5th) of the LA Clippers and Nikola Jokic (82, 9th) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (81, t10th) of the Denver Nuggets.

Jalen Johnson was out with a sprained right ankle and is questionable Friday. Already down Young and Onyeka Okongwu, the Hawks also recently lost Saddiq Bey to a season-ending torn ACL. For the season, his second with the Hawks, Bey appeared in 63 games with 51 starts. He averaged 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds. The Hawks lost Young, their All-Star point guard, for at least a month after he tore a ligament in his left pinkie in a Feb. 23 loss to Toronto. Okongwu went down before the All-Star break with a sprained left big toe.

Defensively since the All-Star break, Atlanta is allowing an average of 106.5 points per game, tied with Miami for the seventh-fewest points allowed. Over that time, the Hawks have held their opponents to 100-or-fewer points in four of their 10 games.

Why Bet on Utah Jazz?

Utah lost a third straight game Tuesday, 123-107 to Boston. The Celtics made 20 3-pointers and outscored the Jazz on second-chance points, 22-8. The C’s were missing rotation players Jaylen Brown (back), Kristaps Porzingis (hamstring) and Al Horford (toe) but shot so well it didn’t matter much.

Jordan Clarkson sparked an 11-3 run in the third quarter to draw the Jazz within two after trailing by double-digits much of the game. But the Celtics responded with 20 straight points. Jrue Holiday made back-to-back 3-pointers to extend their lead to 113-91 with 6:28 to play. The Jazz played without leading scorer Lauri Markkanen (thigh) and Taylor Hendricks (toe).

It’s possible both return for this one as both practiced some on Wednesday. Markkanen (23.1 PPG) has missed four straight. His 3.22 3-point makes per game so far this season also would stand as the third-most 3-point makes per game in Jazz history for a full season. Meanwhile, during the 10 games this season in which he has played 20 or more minutes, the rookie Hendricks has averaged 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 25.4 minutes.

Clarkson had 21 points off the bench but missed practice Wednesday with a groin injury so he’s in question. Rookie Keyonte George was a bright spot in the loss with 26 points and six assists. The former Baylor star has connected on five or more threes in three of his last four contests, scoring north of 25 points in all three of those outings. He has also distributed at least six assists in two straight contests. George is averaging 21.9 points and 6.1 assists over his last eight full games while shooting .466 from 3-point range during that stretch, having made 34 of his last 73 attempts from beyond the arc.

John Collins had 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Over his last 20 games, Collins is averaging 16.2 ppg and 10.4 rpg on .571 shooting — making him one of 10 players in the league to average 15+ points and 10+ rebounds over that span. Collins was selected No. 19 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Hawks and spent the first six seasons of his NBA career with Atlanta (2017-23), posting averages of 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds in 364 games.

Atlanta is one of four NBA teams that the Jazz have yet to host this season. The Hawks won last season’s meeting in Utah, but the Jazz have won three of the last four meetings in Salt Lake City dating to the 2018-19 season. Friday marks former Jazz and current Hawks head coach Quin Snyder’s first game back in Utah after serving as the franchise’s head coach for eight seasons (2014-22). Seven members of the Hawks’ coaching staff served on Snyder’s staff in Utah.
