Dallas Mavericks Insights

The Mavericks have been struggling overall in their last month-plus of action with All-Star guard Luka Dončić sidelined with a calf strain, and he’s not close to a return. Since Doncic strained his left calf during a Christmas Day loss to Minnesota, the Mavericks have gone 7-11. Dallas has fallen to a 26-22 record on the season, and now occupies the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.

Second Half

But the Mavs are playing better lately, with three wins in their past four after a 137-136 victory in New Orleans on Wednesday. Dallas scored 80 points in the second half, shooting 65.9% from the field. The Mavs pulled ahead with a 40-30 third quarter, using a 19-9 run to take a 97-93 lead into the final period. Quentin Grimes had nine points in the quarter and finished with 17. Grimes has moved into a substantial role following the injury to Doncic but has been inconsistent, averaging 12.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.1 three-pointers in 26.5 minutes per game over the past month.

Naji Marshall

Marshall returned from an illness but was limited to five points in 15 minutes against his former team. After Klay Thompson returned from a sprained left ankle to play 24 minutes against the Wizards Monday, he was able to play 29 minutes against the Pelicans Wednesday and had 20 points. Thompson is 5 field goals away from 6,000 career field goals.

Kyrie Irving

Irving was terrific with 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Eventually, Irving has scored 22 points or more in six of his last seven outings, with Monday’s blowout of the Wizards being the exception. Irving was named an All-Star yet again. He’s averaging 24.1 points, 4.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds per game and 48.2 percent shooting (42.2 percent from three).

Jason Kidd

“When you (talk) about Kai, Kai’s leadership and his stats and what he’s done for our team are all-star caliber. (He’s been) stable – his energy, his confidence, his positivity with his teammates is huge for us. His calmness, his ability to understand time and score,” Coach Kidd said.

PJ Washington

Washington added 25 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists (season high). He really has come on with Doncic out. In his last five games, Washington is averaging 22.6 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists. The Mavericks won the rebounding game 51-36 against the Pelicans. It was their third-biggest advantage on the glass this season.

“We have to,” Washington said of stepping up with others out. “We don’t have a choice at this moment. We’re down a lot of players and everybody is taking it personally to go out there and play well. As long as we play together, it doesn’t matter who’s on the court. When we play like that, it’s easy for everybody to keep the momentum going.”

Dallas also remains without starting center Dereck Lively, who may miss another six weeks with a right ankle stress fracture. Daniel Gafford has been starting in his place and also has raised his game.

Detroit Pistons Insights

The Pistons lost its third straight game on Wednesday (all on the road), 133-119 at Indiana. The Pacers 40 first-quarter points on 16-of-20 shooting, including 7 of 10 from 3. They finished 46 of 81 overall (56.8%), 19 of 38 on 3-pointers. You can’t beat that. As hot as the Pacers were shooting, the Pistons trimmed a 20-point deficit in the second quarter to single digits for much of the third quarter and were down 111-105 in the fourth quarter before the Pacers went on a 9-2 run.

Cade Cunningham

All-Star Cunningham had 32 points, nine assists and five boards. He scored at least 20 points for the 10th straight game, a span in which he’s hit for 30-plus on five occasions. Over that stretch, Cunningham is averaging 28.0 points, 9.4 assists, and 5.6 boards. Cunningham currently is orchestrating the 19th season in NBA history with 24.0 PTS, 9.0 AST and 6.0 REB per game. He ranks 3rd in the NBA with 9.4 assists per game and third in with 20 PTS-AST double-doubles.

Malik Beasley

Beasley added 20 points off the bench. One of the NBA’s best deep shooters extended his streak of games with at least one three-pointer to 14, and his streak of games with multiple three-pointers to six. During the latter span, Beasley is averaging 17.8 points and 4.2 made 3-pointers per game, while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and a stellar 49.0 percent (25-for-51) from beyond the arc.

Jalen Duren

Duren had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double was his 19th of the season and sixth in his last seven games. Duren has found his, 2023-24 form over the second half of January, and during that seven-game stretch the third-year center is averaging 14.0 points and 12.4 rebounds while shooting an absurd -popping 71.7 percent from the floor.

Things got heated vs. Indiana, as Isaiah Stewart was ejected for a flagrant foul, while coach J.B. Bickerstaff and a couple of players picked up technicals. Stewart was bounced after he was assessed a flagrant-2 for shoving Indiana big man Thomas Bryant in the second quarter. To add to the spectacle, Stewart appeared to make a gun gesture in the direction of the Pacers bench and then gestured toward the crowd as he was walking off the court. That could lead to a suspension. He’s a key reserve/sometimes starter, averaging 4.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

J.B. Bickerstaff

“Our guys care and compete at a high level,” Bickerstaff said. “There is no opponent that we are going to shy away from. We are going to be who we are. We are going to earn the respect of this league, whoever it is. Everybody is going to respect the Pistons and the way we compete.”

In January, Detroit ranks 3rd in defensive rating (108.5), 4th in opponent’s field goal percentage (44.2%) and 5th in opponent rebounds per game (42.3). The Pistons rank 3rd in the NBA with 18.0 fast points per game this season and 3rd in January with 20.0 per game, so check out the MyBookie NBA betting lines to consider in your plans this week.
