Atlanta Falcons Schedule Odds & Analysis

Free agency is mostly done, the NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror, and we now know the 17-game regular season schedule for the Atlanta Falcons.

There won’t be actual meaningful football for close to four months, but it’s never too early to look ahead to the year and the bets you can place.

Let’s see if Atlanta Falcons have what it takes to back the betting odds to win the Super Bowl.

Owner: Arthur Blank
Head coach: Arthur Smith
Home field: Mercedes-Benz Stadium | Atlanta, Georgia

Super Bowl Champions (+7000)

Spending a lot of money on the Falcons to win the Super Bowl doesn’t make sense. But there is always an unexpected riser from the season before, and why not Atlanta.

They play in a very winnable division, and they are loaded with weapons for Desmond Ridder. If he can be a serviceable quarterback, a flier on the Falcons is worth playing.

NFC Champions (+2500)

The Bears are a trendy pick to rise in the NFC North and maybe make noise in the postseason. The odds of Atlanta doing the same are actually the same as Chicago’s. Both teams are +2500 to win the NFC Championship and play in the Super Bowl.

The Eagles are the class of the conference, but the 49ers are unsettled at quarterback, and the Cowboys haven’t been to the Super Bowl in nearly 30 years. Someone else is going to be in the mix, and the Falcons could be that team.

NFC South Champions (+275)

Not one of the four starting quarterbacks in the NFC South to begin last year will be starting for that team to begin 2023. So many unknowns in a division that was wide-open last year may be even more unpredictable this season.

The Saints are favored at +110, but Alvin Kamara may get suspended, and who knows if Derek Carr will be good. The Falcons have the second shortest odds in the division, and at +275, they provide the most value.

Falcons Win Total

Right now, the oddsmakers have set the over/under on Atlanta Falcons wins at 8.5, with nine wins or over paying +110 and eight wins or under coming in at -130.

In each of the last two seasons, a worse version of the Falcons finished with seven wins. But last year’s team was much better than the year before, with a point differential of just 21 points versus the 146 points in 2021. And in 2022, eight of their ten losses were by one score, and four of the losses were by three points or less.

Getting to nine wins is a distinct possibility.

Weekly Falcons Betting

Because the Falcons played so many close games in 2022, they finished 9-7-1 against the point spread. They were the underdog in 11 of the 17 games, and that is where they were the better bet. They were 7-3-1 ATS when getting points and 3-0-1 when getting points at home.

A lot will change between now and Week 1 in September, but the Falcons are early favorites in only seven of their 17 games. They are a field goal favorite or less in all of them, with the biggest spreads at -3 vs. Houston, -2.5 vs. Indianapolis, and -2.5 at home against Carolina.

They are the biggest underdogs at +6.5 when they play at the New York Jets in Week 13.

Atlanta Falcons Odds After Free Agency Week 1

2019 recap

There was no reason to think the Falcons WOULDN’T be contenders following Week 2 last season when the Falcons beat the visiting Philadelphia Eagles, the eventual NFC East champs, 24-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The most memorable play of Atlanta’s season came in that one as star wideout Julio Jones turned a fourth-down screen pass into a 54-yard winning touchdown with 2:10 remaining.

However, the Falcons lost their next six games. Out of a Week 9 bye, Atlanta pulled one of the NFL’s biggest upsets in years in winning 26-9 at New Orleans, which entered on a six-game winning streak and was a 14-point home favorite.

It was the fourth time — and the first since 2001 — that a team on a losing streak of at least six games beat a team on a winning streak of at least six games, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau. The others came in 1973 and 1948. It was the first time since 2003 that a team with a record of 7-1 or better lost to a team with a record of 1-7 or worse.

The Falcons won again the next week in an upset at Carolina but then lost their next two and that was that on the season. On the bright side, the team did win its final four to finish a solid 7-9. Still, most thought coach Dan Quinn was going to be fired, but owner Arthur Blank is giving him one more year.

Surprising because it’s the first time in Blank’s ownership that he has not fired a coach after consecutive seasons with .500 or losing records. Mike Smith, the coach with the most wins in franchise history (66), was fired after a 4-12 and 6-10 seasons in 2013 and 2014. Jim Mora was fired after going 8-8 and 7-9 in 2005 and 2006.

Atlanta Falcons offseason moves

The Falcons had very little salary-cap space to play with this offseason and said goodbye to the likes of running back Devonta Freeman, tight end Austin Hooper, defensive end Adrian Clayborn, linebacker Vic Beasley and cornerback Desmond Trufant.

To replace Hooper, the Dirty Birds traded for Baltimore tight end Hayden Hurst. The 26-year-old was selected by the Ravens with the 25th-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft after a standout college career at South Carolina. In his two seasons with the Ravens, Hurst caught 43 passes for 512 yards and three touchdowns. Hurst earned a 72.4 grade from Pro Football Focus for his play in 2019, which ranked 14th among all NFL tight ends. Atlanta gave up one of their second-round picks (No. 55 overall) and their fifth-round pick (No. 157 overall) in this year’s NFL Draft for Hurts and the Ravens’ fourth-round pick.

To replace Beasley, the team signed Dante Fowler Jr. The third-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Fowler recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks for the Los Angeles Rams last season. During his four seasons in the league, Fowler has recorded 141 tackles, 34 tackles for a loss and 27.5 sacks. The Falcons finished with 28 sacks last season, which was tied for the second-fewest in the NFL. Fowler knows Quinn well because Quinn recruited Fowler to play in college at Florida.

Finally, the Falcons pounced on running back Todd Gurley when the Rams released the 2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year. Gurley, 25, is a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro who was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 when he gained 2,093 yards from scrimmage and led all NFL players with 19 touchdowns. He had 21 TDs in 2018 but regressed last year, is wildly overpaid and has bad knees. He starred in college at Georgia. It’s a low-risk, high-reward signing.

2020 opponents

  • Home: Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Raiders, Seattle Seahawks.
  • Away: Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings.

Atlanta Falcons 2018 NFL Betting Guide

It’s here: our 2018 schedule.

Week 1: Thursday, Sept. 6, at Philadelphia Eagles, 8:15 PM ET

The Falcons won’t go down easily, but they are going down against a Philadelphia Eagles team that is still loaded with talent and is probably hungrier now to win a Super Bowl than they were last season when it was all just a dream. Superstar quarterback Carson Wentz will be back from his ACL injury and Philly will get the home win, although it’s going to be close.

NFL Betting Pick: Eagles 24 Falcons 21

Week 2: Sunday, Sept. 16, vs. Carolina Panthers, 1:00 PM ET

The Falcons have won four straight against their longtime NFC South division rivals in Carolina when they throw down in the ATL and this Week 2 matchup will make it five straight as part of their almost annual regular season split.

NFL Betting Pick: Atlanta 23 Carolina 20

Week 3: Sunday, Sept. 23, vs. New Orleans Saints, 1:00 PM ET

The Falcons beat their division rivals at home 20-17 in Week 14 and then fell in the Big Easy 23-13 two weeks later. You had better expect another regular season split between two teams that are oh, so evenly matched up!

NFL Betting Pick: Falcons 27 Saints 24

Week 5: Sunday, Oct. 7, at Pittsburgh Steelers, 1:00 PM ET

I think this Week 5 Inter-Conference clash will be a pretty good measuring stick for both Super Bowl hopefuls seeing as how they both fell short of their intended destinations last season but will both enter 2018 with legitimate hopes again. It’s Matt Ryan vs. Ben Roethlisberger, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman vs. Le’Veon Bell and arguably the two best receivers in the game today, Julio Jones vs. Antonio Brown. I’m thinking Pittsburgh gets the narrow win in a flat-out thriller simply because they’re at home.

NFL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh 28 Atlanta 27

Week 11: Sunday, Nov. 18, vs. Dallas Cowboys, 1:00 ET
