The 2022-23 NHL schedule has finished Week 9, and with changes to the standings and injury reports, there will be changes in the future betting odds to win the Stanley Cup.
Let’s dive into who the favorites are, who the smart money is on, and a few betting long shots with nice performances that suggest they could win Lord Stanley’s Cup in June.
NHL Analysis for the Stanley Cup
The Favorites
Boston Bruins (+560)
The Boston Bruins remain the betting favorite in the Eastern Conference to win the Stanley Cup, listed at +560 odds. After a short period where the New Jersey Devils surpassed them, Boston has been the best team in the NHL, has depth across the lineup, and a goaltending tandem that has been excellent all season long.
We don’t expect that to change and expect the Bruins to be among people’s playoff bracket picks to win the Stanley Cup in June. And they have the tools, talent, and depth to do it. In short, the Boston Bruins are the Stanley Cup favorite after nine weeks in the NHL.
Colorado Avalanche (+560)
The Colorado Avalanche have seen their betting odds drop this week, with Nathan MacKinnon joining Avs’ lengthy injury list, but remain the favorite in the Western Conference. The Avalanche have been fighting injuries since before the season began. Captain Gabriel Landeskog has missed the entire season, while the Avs were without three of their top six defensemen this season.
Regardless, when the Avalanche gets healthy, they will have the offensive firepower and defensive structure to help Alexandar Georgiev in net, who has been stellar for the Avs this season, to make another run at the Stanley Cup.
The Smart Picks
New Jersey Devils (+1025)
The New Jersey Devils’ odds of winning the Stanley Cup have improved alongside their record. The Devils are ranked second in the NHL and lead the Metropolitan Divison by seven points over the second-place Carolina Hurricanes.
Vitec Vanecek is for real, Jesper Bratt is making the Devils’ management regret a one-year deal, and Jack Hughes continues to develop into an excellent NHL player. The Devils’ odds will continue to improve as they continue to lead the Metropolitan division and make more people believers.
Toronto Maple Leafs (+800)
You might not like the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they are putting together quite impressive steaks as a team and as individuals. The Maple Leafs have won eight of their last nine games, and Mitch Marner has 22 game point streak.
Add to the mix that Toronto is getting healthier, playing better-structured hockey, and has two goalies playing very good hockey, and you get a potential candidate to win the Stanley Cup in June.
Vegas Golden Knights (+770)
The Vegas Golden Knights continue to impress in 2022-23, leading the Pacific Division and recently defeating the Boston Bruins, the number one-ranked team in the NHL as of publication.
The Golden Knights are built for playoff success, and Logan Thompson has emerged as the go-to goalie for Vegas and could guide the Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup and win the Calder Trophy in the same season.
The Long Shots
Winnipeg Jets (+2200)
You may wonder how the Central Divison-leading Winnipeg Jets are a long shot to win the Stanley Cup. Despite being tied for the division lead with the Dallas Stars and ahead of the injury-laden Colorado Avalanche in the division standings, the Jets have longer odds to win the Stanley Cup than either the Stars, Avalanche, or the likes of the New York Rangers.
Connor Hellebuyck is performing at his former Vezina level, and the Jets are playing some of the best hockey in the franchise’s history since returning to Winnipeg.
The Jets might be a long shot in the odds to win the Stanley Cup right now, but they are a candidate to win the Central Divison and make it to the Stanley Cup final.
New York Rangers (+2100)
The New York Rangers have struggled to take the next step after making it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2022. They have not lied up to preseason expectations of being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
However, the Rangers have won three games in a row against tough competition and have Igor Shesterkin, a game-changing goalie when he is on.
The Rangers might be on the edge of the playoff picture but have the time left in the season to find the increased performance from their young core to match the Rangers’ top players and move them back into the conversation as potential candidates to win the Stanley Cup.
