Rivalry matches to watch out for this weekend: We have another big weekend of MLB action coming our way and a ton of matchups that are well worth watching and wagering on.

It’s a full slate of games on tap, with every team still trying to find their footing in the early part of the new season. Earlier this week, we spoke about the current odds to win the World Series and how those will change as the season progresses, and there are several matchups that could have an impact on those MLB odds, as well as the odds to win each of the individual divisions. There are a lot of series to choose from, and we have picked out 4 that we believe to be among the best, so let’s get right to it.
Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies
Game 1: Friday, April 12, 6:40 PM | Bailey Falter vs Cristopher Sanchez
Game 2: Saturday, April 13, 4:05 PM | Marco Gonzales vs Spencer Turnbull
Game 3: Sunday, April 14, 1:35 PM | Mitch Keller vs Zack Wheeler
It’s the battle of Pennsylvania this weekend, with the Pirates making the short trip to Philadelphia for a series. The Pirates are once again off to a fast start to the season, like they did last year, but will this run last? They head into the weekend sitting at 9-3, winning 7 of their last 10. The Phillies have had an up and down start and are sitting at 6-6, which has them 2 games back of the Braves in the NL East. Pittsburgh is 3-2 in road games this season, while the Phillies are 2-4 at home.

Milwaukee Brewers at Baltimore Orioles
Game 1: Friday, April 12, 7:05 PM, Apple TV+ | Freddy Peralta vs Tyler Wells
Game 2: Saturday, April 13, 4:05 PM | DL Hall vs Dean Kremer
Game 3: Sunday, April 14, 1:35 PM | Colin Rea vs Corbin Burnes
This is an interleague series between a pair of teams that have playoff hopes this season. The Brewers are on the move, winning 2 in a row and 7 of their last 10 to get within a half game of the division leading Pirates in the NL Central. It is a similar story for the Orioles, who are trying to catch the Yankees in the AL East. Baltimore has won 2 in a row to move into 2nd in the division. The Brewers have been great on the road, going 5-1, while the Orioles are 4-2 at home.

New York Yankees at Cleveland Guardians
Game 1: Friday, April 12, 7:10 PM | Clarke Schmidt vs Carlos Carrasco
Game 2: Saturday, April 13, 6:10 PM | Luis Gil vs Triston McKenzie
Game 3: Sunday, April 14, 1:35 PM | Colin Rea vs Corbin Burnes
This stands out because we have a pair of division leaders set to go head-to-head. The Yankees have come storming out the gate as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season in 2023. They are 10-3 right now, although they are coming off a loss. The Yankees are an impressive 6-1 on the road. The Guardians have the early lead in a Central Division that promises to be tight. The Guardians are 9-3 overall and 2-1 at home, giving them a 1-game lead in the division.

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros
Game 1: Friday, April 12, 8:10 PM | Dane Dunning vs J.P. France
Game 2: Saturday, April 13, 4:05 PM, FS1 | Andrew Heaney vs Ronel Blanco
Game 3: Sunday, April 14, 1:40 PM | Nestor Cortes vs Logan Allen
The general consensus was that these two teams would be in a duel to win the AL West, just as they were last season. The Rangers are holding up their end of the bargain, leading the way with a 7-5 record. They have not traveled much just yet and are 2-1 in road games in the early going. Things are not looking good for the Astros, as they are at 4-9 thus far, which has them dead last in the West. They have lost 2 in a row and are just 2-5 in their own building. This is a must win series for both teams.

2024 MLB Best Weekend Games This Week 1
Rivalry matches to watch out for this weekend: We have another big weekend of MLB action coming our way as teams continue to try and get into the swing of the new season.
MyBookie MLB Best Weekend Games This Week 1 | MLB Daily Lines
Other than the Pittsburgh Pirates overperforming and the Houston Astros underwhelming, there haven’t really been any major surprises to talk about through the opening week of the season. Of course, that could all change sooner rather than later, but that is a conversation better left to an entirely different article. For now, it is time to look ahead to what is a very busy schedule this coming weekend. We have some really great matchups to look forward to, but we have narrowed It down to 4 that we really like. Most of these are rivalry type matchups, but we also have one that might well be a playoff preview, which seems ridiculous to say aloud at this early stage. Let’s take a closer look to consider in your MLB betting plans.
Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees
Game 1: Friday, April 5, 1:05 PM | Yusei Kikuchi vs Marcus Stroman
Game 2: Saturday, April 6, 7:05 PM, ESPN+ | Kevin Gausman vs Clarke Schmidt
Game 3: Sunday, April 7, 1:35 PM | Bowden Francis vs Luis Gil
The expectation is that the AL East is going to be one of the strongest divisions in the MLB this season, just as it was last year. This is especially true when you consider that the Yankees are stronger and healthier this time around. They have certainly laid down an early marker, winning each of their first 5 games before taking their first loss of the season. It has been an up and down start for the Blue Jays, who, as of Wednesday afternoon, are playing .500 ball. It’s never too early to make a statement against a divisional opponent, which is what both teams will be looking to do.

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants
Game 1: Friday, April 5, 4:35 PM | Dylan Cease vs Jordan Hicks
Game 2: Saturday, April 6, 9:05 PM | Michael King vs Keaton Winn
Game 3: Sunday, April 7, 4:05 PM | Matt Waldron vs Logan Webb
We have another divisional matchup set to go this weekend, with the Padres making the short trip to San Francisco to face the Giants. Both teams are out to losing starts, which is never good when you are playing in the same division as the LA Dodgers, who look like a lock to run away with it again this season. Staying in touch with the leader is important, so both the Padres and the Giants will be looking to turn their fortunes around and get on the right side of .500.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Atlanta Braves
Game 1: Friday, April 5, 7:20 PM | Tommy Henry vs Spencer Strider
Game 2: Saturday, April 6, 7:20 PM | Brandon Pfaadt vs Max Fried
Game 3: Sunday, April 7, 1:35 PM | Ryne Nelson vs Chris Sale
It’s still to soon to be talking about potential playoff matchups, but that is potentially what we are looking at here. The Diamondbacks are coming off a successful season that saw them go all the way to the World Series, where they eventually lost to the Texas Rangers, while a lot of fans and pundits have the Atlanta Braves in as one of the favorites to end the season with another World Series Championship. Both teams are out to a winning start, but do the Braves have a slight edge at home?

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers
Game 1: Friday, April 5, 8:05 PM, Apple TV+ | Hunter Brown vs Cody Bradford
Game 2: Saturday, April 6, 7:05 PM | J.P. France vs Jon Gray
Game 3: Sunday, April 7, 7:00 PM, ESPN | Ronel Blanco vs Dane Dunning
The battle for the AL West is on, with the Rangers looking to defend their championship crown this season. They were unable to win the West last season and had to go the long road to the championship, starting things out in the Wild Card. It was the Houston Astros who ultimately won the West in 2023, but they are out to a rough start, losing each of their first 5 games before finally picking up a win. The Astros probably need this one more, even this early in the season, so this should be fun to watch.
