The NFL season has turned a corner and is heading to the home stretch of its regular season. There have been plenty of surprises so far this season, perhaps none greater than the AFC West looking like the division to beat and laying a giant egg.
While nobody is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, oddsmakers find it difficult to believe these longshots will win Super Bowl 57: Houston Texans (+125000), Carolina Panthers (+85000), Pittsburgh Steelers (+80000), Chicago Bears (+65000), Detroit Lions (+40000), Indianapolis Colts (+30000) – who have benched Matt Ryan and fired their offensive coordinator and head coach, Washington Commanders (+26000), Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons all at +15000, the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos each at +13000 and the Jacksonville Jaguars at +12000.
Surprisingly Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are longshots at +10000, though they have lost five straight and show no signs of an improved offense.
Here’s a look at some of the top contenders and pretenders at the season’s slightly more than the halfway mark. Let’s jump right into action so you can keep planning your bets against the Super Bowl Betting Odds.
Evaluating Super Bowl 57 Contenders And Pretenders After 9 Weeks of Play
The favorites
Buffalo Bills, +285: Despite a poor effort in a loss to the New York Jets, the Bills are still the favorites given how dominant their defense has played and with quarterback Josh Allen playing at a MVP level. Though 6-2 with a half-game lead over the Jets and Miami Dolphins, the Bills appear to be the best team in the AFC.
Philadelphia Eagles, +510: Some say the Eagles have played a soft schedule, but the famous saying goes, “you are what your record is,” and the Eagles are the last undefeated team remaining at 8-0. Jalen Hurts has taken a step forward as a quarterback, and the defense has proven legit.
Kansas City Chiefs, +520: The Chiefs have emerged at 6-2 to lead the AFC West, though they lost an early season meeting with the Bills. So it’s unclear where they’re at with their defense and a rushing attack that has struggled. They certainly miss Tyreek Hill.
Are they for real?
San Francisco 49ers, +1175: The 49ers showed they are going for it by trading for Christian McCaffrey, and they have a strong defense. While only 4-4, they look more the part than most in the NFC, a league with just five teams with a winning record.
Baltimore Ravens, +1275: Lamar Jackson got off to a MVP start, and the Ravens have found ways to win by shoring up their pass defense. The biggest question is the health of tight end Mark Andrews.
Minnesota Vikings, +1575: At 7-1, the Vikings look the part with a strong running game, and quarterback Kirk Cousins is serviceable as a game manager. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
Jury is out
- Dallas Cowboys, +1375: The Cowboys are 6-2 after Cooper Rush steered the ship with Dak Prescott out. We’ll see how they play down the stretch.
- Miami Dolphins, +2300: If the defense can get healthy, the offense has elite speed and a talented play-caller.
- Cincinnati Bengals, +2700: They’ve been hot and cold but hope to find consistency for a playoff push.
