US Open Tennis: Underdogs to Bet

The final tennis major of the year drops first serve this month on August 24. On that day, top players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Iga Swatek and Aryna Sabalenka battle it out for the US Open Tennis title.

In recent years, underdogs have upset the favorites.

Will that happen again this year?

Check out tennis odds, analysis, and picks for the top three underdogs in both the WTA and ATP to win this year’s US Open.

Writers’s ATP Underdog Picks for the Next U.S. Open

Alexander Zverev +1600

Zverev has gotten close to winning the US Open.

In 2020, the top underdog choice on the men’s side battled Dominic Thiem in a 5-set and 1-tiebreaker classic.

Thiem ended up beating Zverev.

This year, Zverev has played decent tennis.

He’s won a singles title and made it to the French Open Finals, falling to Carlos Alcaraz.

Taylor Fritz +3300

Fritz has won 2 singles titles this year.

Although he doesn’t have the resume that Zverev possesses, the American made it to the U.S. Open Quarterfinals in 2023.

He’s also having a decent year at major tournaments, scoring quarterfinal finishes at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The hardcourts at Flushing Meadows favors Fritz’s style.

So if he’s ready, he can be a tough out for the chalks.

Casper Ruud +3400

Like Fritz and Zverev, Ruud is having a decent 2024.

Casper has pocketed over $3 million after winning 2 titles.

His performance in the majors this year have left something to be desired, though.

But at the 2022 US Open, Ruud lost to Alcaraz in the final.

That tells us he can play well in this tournament.

At the odds, Ruud is worth a look.

Writers’s WTA Underdog Picks for the Next U.S. Open

Ons Jabeur +2200

Jabeur hasn’t had a great WTA season, going 16-13 in singles matches.

But in the past, she’s been a top player at major tournaments, losing in the Wimbledon Final match in both 2022 and 2023.

In 2022, Jabeur lost to Iga Swiatek at the US Open Final.

When Ons has her racket working, she can hang with the best in the world.

Also, nobody can argue against the excellent odds, which makes Jabeur an overlay.

Danielle Collins +2200

Collins offers the same odds as Jabeur.

Danielle may be due for a breakout in a major tournaments.

Earlier this year, Collins upset Elena Rybakina, a US Open favorite, to win the Miami Open.

She followed up the Miami Open victory with a victory at the Charleston Open.

Collins also made it to the semifinals at the Internazionale BNL d’Italia, falling to Aryna Sabalenka.

At the US Open, her best finish ahs been fourth place.

For sure, Danielle Collins can eclipse that personal best.

If things go her way, she could manage a finals trip because she should have success over the hardcourts.

Barbora Krejcikova +2600

The odds are overlaid on the Wimbledon champ.

Barbora Krejcikova should offer around what Collins and Jabeur offer, not 26-to-1.

Krejcikova has battled nagging injuries all year.

She still managed a quarterfinals trip at the Australian Open, losing to Aryana Sabalenka.

At Wimbledon, Barbora broke out with a sensational performance, beating four straight seeded players: 11-Danielle Collins, 13-Jelena Ostapenko, 4-Elena Rybakina, and 7-Jasmine Paolini.

Krejcikova is the best overlay bet on the board.

US Open Underdogs to Keep An Eye On That Could Surprise

US Open Women’s Singles

Top Underdog: Marketa Vondrousova +1925
Vondrousova beat Ons Jabeur to win Wimbledon but in her next, Marketa couldn’t get by Coco Gauff, which is why although Vondrousova is a major winner, she’s going off at higher odds than Coco.

Marketa had every right to bounce after the stunning display of tennis at Wimbledon. The odds make Vondrousova an overlay to win back-to-back major titles. Also, the women’s side is deeper than the men’s. So Vondrousova’s odds should be closer to Gauff’s than the high number.

Second Underdog Pick: Coco Gauff +1225
In late July and early August, Coco beat Maria Sakkari at the Mubadala DC Citi Open Finals. Gauff then played to the quarterfinals at the Omnium National Bank where she fell to Jessica Pegula.

Coco is playing some of the best tennis of her career. Check out how she plays at the Western & Southern Open. If she plays well, she might be worth a bet before dropping dollars on Vondrousova.

High Payout Underdog: Beatriz Haddad Maia +3000
Haddad Maia was rolling along at Wimbledon until a fourth round matchup against Elena Rybakina. Something must have gone amiss because Haddad Maia had to retire.

At the Omnium National Bank, Haddad Maia beat Magdalena Frech in the first round, but then lost to Leylah Fernandez in the second. Beatriz isn’t playing her best, which is why the odds are 30-to-1.

If Maia can get it together before the start of the U.S. Open, though, she’ll have a chance. It’s a big if, but at 30-to-1 odds, we’re willing to take a chance.

US Open Men’s Singles

Top Underdog: Alexander Zverev +1925
Zverev made it all the way to the FreLnch Open Semifinals. He suffered a slight injury in a loss to Casper Ruud. Since then, Zverev has played okay, but not great.

Still, Alexander is one of the few men’s players who can win the U.S. Open outside of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. When Alexander is on, he can beat the best in the world.

We should expect Zverev to put forth an excellent effort. If Alexander is on his game, he can pull off the upset victory.

Second Underdog Pick: Casper Ruud +1750
Ruud has the talent to win the US Open. But his odds are lower than Zverev’s and the two players are on the same level.

So if you like Ruud to upset Djokovic and Alvaraz, it makes sense to put the +1925 choice on top. But if you think Ruud is a better play than Zverev, go for it.

High Payout Underdog: Taylor Fritz +3100
Fritz has played well in 2 of the last 3 tournaments he’s entered. Taylor won the Atlanta Open and then lost in the semifinals at the Mubadala Citi DC Open.

Fritz couldn’t get by Alex De Minaur in the third round at the Omnium National Bank. Taylor has never gone past the third round at the US Open. So Fritz must do something out of the ordinary. However, he’s in good enough form to warrant a look and the odds are fantastic. At +3100, Taylor Fritz is the best underdog play on the board.
