He reached a career-best world No. 25 in July and won his second career title in Halle, where he beat Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Andrey Rublev.

There’s going to be a handful of upsets in the first round. This is true for every tournament. Casper Ruud is as great of an option as any betting favorite to lose his first-round match.

Ruud, a Norwegian who reached a career-best world No. 5 earlier this summer, hasn’t been playing up to his capabilities as of late. The French Open finalist lost in the second round at Wimbledon and first round at the Swedish Open. The 23-year-old Aussie lost to his compatriot Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open and lost to Canadian Felix-Auger Aliassime in the Round of 32 at the Western & Southern Open.

Filip Krajinovic, meanwhile, is a crafty veteran who isn’t going to go away easily. He represents a tough first-round challenge for De Minaur and won’t go away quietly. De Minaur won their only match (0-6, 6-4, 6-4) last year at the Cincinnati Masters.

Tatjana Maria (+350) vs Maria Sakkari (-500)

Tatjana Maria is 2-1 against Maria Sakkari in her career, but the Greek player is the favorite here based on her ranking. The world No. 3 player, however, lost in the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open and is coming off of a first-round loss to Caroline Garcia in the Western & Southern Open.

Maria, meanwhile, is a feisty veteran who has a tendency to perform well against top competition, especially this season. She advanced all the way to the semifinals at Wimbledon.

Ons Jabeur (-800) vs Madison Brengle (+500)

Ons Jabeur, who defeated Maria in the semifinals at Wimbledon, hasn’t looked quite as impressive since losing in the Wimbledon final to Elena Rybakina. She lost in the Round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open and in the Round of 32 at the Canadian Open.

Jabeur has only played her US Open first-round opponent, Madison Brengle, once in the past. Jabeur won that match 7-6, 6-2, at the Hobart International in Australia in 2020. Brengle, however, will have the home crowd on her side and could surprise the talented Tunisian.

How the Favorites Have Fared

Despite being the betting favorite, Djokovic is unlikely to compete in the US Open. He missed the Australian Open earlier this year because of his vaccination status and it doesn’t appear as though the American government is willing to change its stance on unvaccinated travelers.

John McEnroe recently spoke up in favor of Djokovic, saying he should be allowed to compete, and there’s an ongoing petition in which fans are seeking to have the Serbian chase his 22nd Grand Slam.

Rafael Nadal, absent since Wimbledon due to an abdominal injury, is cleared for action and competing in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

One of the best bets outside of the top 10 betting favorites is Hubert Hurkacz (+5000). A strong player on the hard court, Hurkacz reached the final of the Canadian Open with impressive victories over Kyrgios and Casper Ruud.

Simona Halep, meanwhile, appears to be reclaiming her spot as the top female tennis player. Haddad Maia (+2800) is a solid betting option in the women’s draw. The Brazilian has played well against top-ranked opponents this year. Another Setback for de Minaur and Australia

Just a month after he had to miss the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to a positive COVID-19 test, Alex de Minaur suffered another setback as he crashed out of the 2021 US Open. The world no.17 got knocked out in four sets against Taylor Fritz, who won 3-1, with 7-6, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

For Fritz, it was a shocking win but a well-deserved one, as the American finally overcame his demons and beat the Australian for the first time in five meetings. De Minaur has not lost to Fritz once before, nor has he dropped a single set in his previous four meetings, dating back to June 2018.

However, de Minaur had his chances and looked set to mount a comeback following a convincing 6-1 victory in the third set. But he was unable to keep his momentum going and eventually had to admit defeat to the current world no.42.

De Minaur’s exit from the 2021 US Open continues a disappointing start to the tournament for the Australian tennis players, with Ash Barty as one of the two remaining Aussies still in the race for the coveted trophy.

Another big exit for Australia happened on Tuesday when Nick Kyrgios lost against Roberto Bautista Augut with 0-3. Kyrgios looked set to win the game, but after losing the first two sets with 3-6 and 4-6, he completely capitulated and lost the third set 0-6, ending his quest for the 2021 US Open title with the fewest games of his career in Grand Slam.

Barty Still In The Race For Back-To-Back Slams

Current world no.1 is still in the race for the 2021 US Open title, having beaten Vera Zvonareva (2-0) with 6-1, 7-6. It was a close match, but the Aussie came through, proving to everyone why she is considered the best in her class.

Ash Barty entered the 2021 US Open off wins at Wimbledon and Cincinnati and is now battling her way through the field to her third Grand Slam title, having already won the French Open in 2019. Still, she hasn’t done too well at the US Open in her previous attempts.

Across five appearances, Barty never managed to make it past R4, having reached that stage in 2019 and 2020. Still, she is in the form of her life, as she has already made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.

The 25-year-old will face off against Denmark’s Clara Tauson on Thursday, September 2, for the first time in her career. Tauson will enter the match on a six-game winning streak, which includes a 2-1 victory against Emma Raducano in the Chicago finals and a clean 2-0 sweep of world no.92 Clara Burel in the first round of play at the 2021 US Open.

Djokovic Records a Routine Win

Novak Djokovic recorded a routine win at the U.S. Open to stay on track for a calendar Grand Slam. The Serb eased past Tallon Griekspoor with 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the competition and took one step closer to his 21st major tournament title.

The world no.1 won the season’s opening Grand Slams in Australia, France, and Wimbledon and has, with his win against Griekspoor, kept his hopes alive of lifting the coveted trophy at Flushing Meadows.

The Round 2 affair lasted for one hour and 39 minutes, albeit not once did it seem like Griekspoor could upset the Serbian tennis star. After seeing Djokovic drop a set in his opener against Holger Rune (3-1), it was a nice change.

“Great performance. Definitely better than the first-round match,” said Djokovic after the match.

“Obviously, I’m very pleased with the way I came out on the court. I served very well, I found the rhythm on the serve. It was important I came up with the goods.”

Although a solid showing from Djokovic, it was a painful loss for Griekspoor, who has impressed with his performance in R1 of the 2021 U.S. Open. The 25-year-old had caused quite an upset in R1 when he defeated world no. 52 Jan-Lennard Struff with 3-2.

Despite his success last time out, the Dutchman proved to be no match for Djokovic, who continues to prove to the world why he is regarded as one of the best tennis players in history.

Djokovic will face off against world no.56 Kei Nishikori in R3 of the 2021 U.S. Open on Saturday, September 4. The Serb has already met with Nishikori 10 times before and has yet to lose a game. What’s more, Djokovic hasn’t dropped a single set against Nishikori across their last three meetings.

Barty Edges Past Tauson

Ash Barty kept her dreams of winning her first U.S. Open title and her second Grand Slam of the year alive with a narrow win against Clara Tauson, who she beat with 6-1, 7-5. Although a fairly convincing win on paper, the current no.1 faced much tougher resistance than initially expected.

Tauson, who entered the match as a +600 underdog, started the meeting poorly and lost the first set (1-6) in just 35 minutes, unable to match Barty. However, the 18-year-old put up a solid fight in the second set, where she took a 3-2 lead; however, she was again outmatched by the current best female tennis player.

After trailing 2-3, Barty mounted an attack and won the next three sets (5-3) before the extended ninth set ended in favor of Tauson. The up-and-coming Danish star used her momentum and tied Barty at 5-5 but was denied an upset win due to a streak of errors.

Even though Tauson crashed out of the 2021 U.S. Open in R2, she can be happy with her showings on the year. She has previously made it to R2 in France – tieing her record from 2020 – and was unfortunate enough to face the tournament favorite in her debut in New York.

Barty can be happy with her win, but she will have to step up her game if she wishes to make it past world no.43 Shelby Rogers, who she will meet on Saturday, September 4, in the 1/16 finals. Still, the Aussie can feel confident heading into the match, having beaten the American tennis player in all of their last five meetings.

Barty met with Rogers twice in 2021, in Madrid and Charleston, where she won with 2-0 and 2-1, respectively.

World No.1 and No.2 Out!

Just last week, the offered 2021 U.S. Open outright betting odds made it very clear which two women tennis players are favored to win and who should deliver without any issues. Ashleigh Barty was priced as the main favorite to win the Grand Slam title at +275, followed by Naomi Osaka at +450.

The two were a clear cut above the rest of the field, with Aryna Sabalenka, as the third-favorite, priced as high as +1000 on the U.S.

Open outright betting market. Seeing those betting odds, it would be fair to assume that either Osaka or Barty will win the title – but you would be wrong.

In an unexpected turn of events over the weekend, both Barty and Osaka crashed out of the 2021 U.S. Open, which effectively opened up the field, with five players now priced at +750 or under.

Osaka crashed out of the tournament on Saturday, with a 7-5, 6-7, 4-6 defeat against world no.73 Leylah Annie Fernandez. Meanwhile, Barty fell apart against world no. 43 Shelby Rogers (2-6, 6-1, 6-7) on Sunday.

Sabalenka, who was priced as the third-most likely player to succeed just a few days back, is now the main favorite to win her career’s first Grand Slam tournament at +240. The Belarus tennis star is already through into the quarter-finals, where she will meet with Barbora Krejcikova.

Due to the massive shakeup in the outright betting odds, Elina Svitolina (+450) and Karolina Pliskova (+600) have now emerged as the second and third betting favorites to win the 2021 U.S. Open, respectively.

No Surprises in the Men’s Side of The Competition

While the female’s field turned upside down over the weekend, the men’s side of the competition hasn’t produced as many shocking moments. The main three favorites in Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev are all still in the race for the title, priced at similar odds than where they were before the weekend.

Djokovic continues to lead the way at -160, followed by Medvedev in second at +200, while Zverev kept ahold of his tag as the third-favorite at +450.

Raducanu’s Miracle Run Continues

The teenage sensation, Emma Raducanu, has reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 U.S. Open with a commanding 2-0 sweep of Shelby Rogers, who she beat with 6-2, 6-1 on Monday.

A miracle run that seems like it has escaped from a movie script has seen the 18-year-old make it past some formidable opponents. That includes Mayar Sherif (6-1, 6-4), Stefanie Vogele (6-2, 6-3), Zhang Shuai (6-2, 6-4), Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-0. 6-1) and Rogers (6-2, 6-1), translating into one of the most dominant runs of the tournament.

Her victory against Rogers – the last remaining American in the women’s singles – marks Raducanu’s most significant accomplishment of her career, having never made it this far in a Grand Slam tennis tournament. What’s more, the 2021 U.S. Open is Raducanu’s first Grand Slam of her career.

It’s interesting to know that in June, Raducanu was in school, wondering whether she will receive a Wild Card invitation into Wimbledon. Fast forward three months, he is ready to play in the 2021 U.S. Open quarter-finals.

Her next opponent is the Tokyo 2020 Olympics singles gold medalist, Belinda Bencic, who Raducanu will clash with on Wednesday, September 8.

Djokovic Makes It Past Brooksby

The 20-time Grand Slam champions and current no.1 tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, has reached the 2021 U.S. Open quarter-finals, with a 3-1 victory against Jenson Brooksby; however, the Serb had to dig deep to make it out alive.

While ranked 98 ranks below Djokovic in the FedEx ATP Rankings, Brooksby didn’t give up on the day and proved to the world that he can compete with one of the best tennis players to ever touch the game. The 20-year-old showed up big in the first set when he humiliated Djokovic and claimed the first set lead with 6-1.

With everything pointing towards a possible upset win for the American tennis player, Djokovic woke up and won the remaining three sets, dropping only seven games along the way (6-3, 6-2, 6-2).

It took Djokovic two hours and 58 minutes to make it past Brooksby, who has ended his third appearance at the U.S. Open on a bittersweet note. By reaching R4, Brooksby has secured his career-best finish at a Grand Slam.

He has previously appeared in only three Grand Slam tennis tournaments, including two U.S. Opens, and the 2021 French Open, albeit he has never made it further than R2.

With this win, Djokovic is now through into the quarter-finals, where he will meet with Matteo Berrettini. The Italian has made it into the final stage of the Grand Slam with a convincing 3-1 win against Oscar Otte, who he beat with 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Monday.

Dominic Thiem: +700

Despite a very early loss in his last major appearance, Dominic Thiem is one of the best in the world. All he has done is win and make it far. He got his early L out of the way and will recover in a big way.

An underdog of sorts to win in Flushing, he will have a good chance.

The Favorite: Novak Djokovic -125

Of course, Djokovic is favored to win, to the surprise of nobody. All he does is tear it up and dominate. -125 to win it; he’s won everything this year. The end of 2020 belonged to him, and the first half of 2021 has been much the same.

As a matter of fact, since his disqualification at last year’s open, he hasn’t lost anywhere. His drive to be great is second to none in the sport, and it shows clear as day. If anybody wants to usurp him, it is likely to have all five sets. The wins come in groves, and the trophies continue to pile up for him.

Djokovic is a player nobody wants to see. Federer and Nadal have slowed up while he’s been winning everything. And if he wins this one, it will create further separation in the grand slam column. Watch out for the great Serbian.

Goffin is no lock with both, Shapovalov and Fritz playing solid tennis right now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shapovalov reach the quarters opposite The Djoker.

No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem is going to have his hands full getting past former U.S. Open winner Marin Cilic in the third round with the winner likely facing talented Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev has looked great in winning his first two matches in straight sets as he looks to reach the finals in consecutive years

However, the player I have my eye on right now is world No. 5 and fifth-seeded Alex Zverev. The sweet-swinging German needed four sets to get past veteran Kevin Anderson in the first round, but then he dropped the hammer on Brandon Nakashima in four sets in the second round. I also suggest keeping an eye on the rising Vasek Pospisil. The world No. 94 is back to playing like a Top 20 player and has looked fantastic in dispatching Philip Kohlschreiber in straight sets and No. 25 seed Milos Raonic, in four sets.

On the women’s side, my upset pick, Greek No. 15 seed Maria Sakkari has a huge match on her hands in the third round against American and No. 22 seed Amanda Anisimova and if she gets past that, will face the winner of the Serena Williams/Sloane Stephens third round clash. Sakkari dispatched Williams at the Western & Southern Open, so, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the blossoming big-hitter advance to the quarters. Three-time major winner and 2016 U.S. Open champ, No. 17 seed Angelique Kerber is looming and will face the winner of the Caroline Garcia/Jennifer Brady third round matchup, though both, Garcia and Brady are playing out of their respective minds at the moment.

I’m already penciling in two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova into the quarters. After getting past American Jessica Pegula, Kvitova will take on the winner of the all-American matchup between Madison Brengle and Shelby Rogers. No. 2 seed Sofia Kenin is playing well and looking like a virtual lock to reach the quarters if she gets past reinvigorated, two-time Aussie Open winner and former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka in what looks like a sure-fire third round meeting. As it stands right now, I like Kerber, Sakkari and Kenin to reach the semis with one spot clearly up for grabs.
